\VILLIAM D. HALL, OF BELOIT, \VISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN FOSTER & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FOR EMBOSSING AND ORNAMENTING BOOT 0R SHOE SOLES.
SPECIFICATION farming part of Letters Patent No. 315,775, dated April 14-, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. HALL, of Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Embossing and Ornamenting the Under Side of Boot or Shoe Soles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved machine for embossing and ornamenting the under sides of the soles of boots and shoes, and producing an imitation stitch.
The invention consists in numerous combinations of parts, as will be fully set forth and described hereinafter. 1
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar lettersof reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side view of my improved machine for embossing and ornamenting the un der side of the soles of boots and shoes, parts being in section. Fig. 2 is a face view of the revolving die. Fig. 3 is a face view of the under side of an ornamented sole.
An upright, A, secured on a suitableframe, B, is provided with an arm, 0, on which and the upright a horizontal shaft, D, is journaled, one end of which projects from the end of the arm, and carries a toothed wheel or die, E, the teeth of which have sharp edges. On the opposite end of the shaft 2. cog-wheel, F, is mounted, which engages with a pinion, G, provided with a crank-handle, H.
In bracket-arms I of a frame, J secured on the supporting-frame B,a shaft, K,is arranged to slide vertically. In the top of the bracket I a check-screw, L, is screwed, against which the upper end of the shaft K can strike to prevent the said shaft from moving upward too far and pressing the sole of the shoe placed on the horn with too much force against the die E.
The limit of the movement of the shaft can easily be adjusted by means of the said screw. An apertured nut or plug, M, is screwed in thelower end of the lower bracket, and through which is screwed into the lower end of the g shaft K, and the lower end of which is connected by a rod, 0, with a pivoted foot-lever, P. A spring, Q, surrounding the rod N, presses the shaft K upward.
Between the brackets I the lower end of a horn, R, is held on the shaft K by a set-screw, S, and the upper end of the horn is adapted to be held directly under the circular die or embossing-wheel E. The horn R can be adjusted higher or lower on the shaft K, and held in place by means of the screw S. The shoe is placed on the upper end of the horn, which is swung under the die E, the shaft K turning in the brackets I. The foot-lever P, which has been depressed, is released, and the spring Q moves upward the shaft K and the horn R, and presses the under side of the sole against the circular die or embossingwheel E, which is revolved by turning the crank-handle H. The shoe is moved in such a manner that the entire edge part of the under side of the sole passes under the die.
The teeth of the die or wheel E cut recesses or grooves into the under side of the sole, the said grooves extending inward from the edge of the sole, and thus ornamenting the sole by producing an imitation stitch on its under side. The tension of the spring Q, can be adjusted by means of the nut or plug M.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a machine for ornamenting and embossing the under sides of soles, the combination, with a shaftcarrying a toothed die or wheel, of avertically-movable shaft adapted to turn on its longitudinal axis, a horn held adjustably on the shaft, and a check-screw for limiting the upward movement of the shaft, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a machine for ornamenting and embossing the under sides of soles, the combination, with the shaft D, carrying the toothed die or wheel 1*], of the brackets I, the shaft K, the horn R, the spring Q, the rod 0, and the foot-lever I substantially as herein shown and the lever P, spring Q, the nut M, and the horn described. 1 R on the shaft K, substantially as herein shown 3. In a, machine for ornamenting and emand described. bossing the under sides of soles, the combi- I r 5 nation, with the-upright A and arm 0, ofl W itnesses:
the shaft D, the toothed die 01' Wheel E, the I F. E. KUNZ, brackets I, the shaft K, the rod N, the rod 0,
WILLIAM D. HALL.
JOSHUA FOSTER.
