- G. PAGE 82 L. GOULLIOUD.
LUBRIGATOR FOR SHAFTS.
No. 315,538. Patelited Apr. 14, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES PAGE AND LOUIS GOULLIOUD, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD TO THOMAS F. G. FOISY, OF SAME PLACE.
LUBRICATOR FOR SHAFTS.
S1?ECIJEIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,538, dated April 14:, 1885.
' Application filed September 15, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom) it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES PAGE and LOUIS GOULLIOUD, both of the city of Montreal, in the District of Montreal and Province of Quebec, Canada, have jointlyinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators for Shafts; and we do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and eX act description of the same.
Our invention is applicable to all kinds of shafting, whether the same be suspended in hangers or carried by standards; and it consists in a novel arrangement whereby an endless chain (of the same description as those heretofore used for raising oil from a well to a shaft) can be practically applied to the exterior of any journal-box so as to lubricate the shaft without requiring the slightest alteration or movement of parts,'in this manner producing an efficient lubricating device at a nominal cost.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a journal box and hanger with our invention applied, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same with parts in section.
Letters similar to those used in the following description indicate like parts in the drawings.
A represents any ordinary shaft hanger, and B ajournal-box of any of,the usual kinds, 0 being the shaft carried in such journal.
Beneath the journal-box B we suspend or attach, in any suitable or approved manner, an oil dish or cup, D, of some such configuration as that shown in the drawings, the only requisite beingthat its ends shall extend past the ends of the journal-box, so as to catch any drip and to give place for the endless chain E. This chain is of any suitable shape and weight in links, and passes over the shaft close to or touching the end of thejournal-box, and also passes underneath a hook or guide, F, which is contained in the oil-dish D, being preferabl y of somewhat the shape shown, and screwed into or otherwise fastened to the bottom of said dish.
In using our invention with extralong bearings we placeachain at bothends of thejournalbox and provide a hook or guidefor each in the dish D, said hooks being in all cases turned with their points inward or toward the center of the bearing. This arrangement has the effect of keeping the chain always close up against the end of the journal -'box, which causes the oil elevated from the dish below to flow along the shaft inside the box, and thus efficiently lubricate thejournal.
What we claim is- The lubricating device herein described, consisting of the chain E, oil-dish D, and hook or guide F, arranged in said dish, in combination with a shaft and journal-box, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
