C. P. T. STEINWAY. f
Y PANEL POR UPRIGHT PIANOS. No. 315,447.Y Patented Apr. 7, 1885.
WITNESSBS INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.;
C. F. THEODOR STEINWAY, OF NEW YORK. N. Y.
PANEL FOR UPRIGHT P|AN os.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,447, dated April 7, 18,85.
' Application filed March `26, 1884. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, C. F. THEoDoR STEIN- WAY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Panels for Upright Pianos, of which the following is a specification.
The panels used heretofore in upright pianos were either made entirely closed, which prevented the sounds from the strings to pass to the outside, or they were made of ornamental fretwork, which was liable to crack in course of time,- owing to the sh rinkage of the wood.
The object of my invention is to furnish panels for upright and other pianos, organs, Src., which not alone permit lthe sound toescape freely, but which may be brought out in any desired design, plain and in relief, so as to extend thereby the scope of ornamentation applicable to the panels of the different kinds of pianos.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an upright piano-forte with my improved panels. Fig. 2is a detail front view of my improved panel on a larger scale; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same on line x x, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the exterior frame of my improved panel for npright and other piano-fortes, organs,l &c., which is composed of two parts, a and b. This panel may be located at the upper or lower part of the case. The exterior part of the frame A is made of suitable wood, in keeping with the wood from which the case of the piano has been made. A lining or backing, B, of wire-gauze, is clamped between the two parts of the frame A of the panel, the face sideof the lining B being covered with openwork filling C, of a suitable plastic materialsuch as hard rubber, imitation wood, &c.- which is applied to the wire-gauze lining B by a suitable layer of cement, the connection being re-enforced by a second layer of cement at the back of the lining, which acts in the nature of an anchoring on the wire-gauze, so as to retain the open-work filling securely in position. Thefwire-gauze lining B and the open-work lling C permit the free escape of the sounds, and permit a more artistic treatnient of the panels, as the designer is not confined to the heavy continuous lines of the fretwork, which latter has to be self-supporting and rigid, and-` does not permit the application of such delicate and iine-lined figures as can be produced by :my improved construce' tion. by its entire baci; surface to the wire, gauze it is supported thereon in such a manner that Asl the filling is cemented or anchored i 6o I no rattling noise` is caused by the passage `of A i the sound-waves through the openings of the panel.
Upon the open-work filling O are cast the ornamental figures or designs, which may be differently colored or not, to suit the fancy.. The filling forms a secure backing firmly re` enforced by the wire-gauze, and the ornaments are cast upon the face thereof. The latter need not necessarily be of a size sufficient] y large to artistically fill the panel, fortheilling C pre- -sents a neat appearancepand relieves mo:
notony.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to lsecure by Letters Patent- 1. As an article of manufacture, Ia panel for` musical instruments consisting of a' frameof two parts, a backing of wire-gauze stretched I in said frame and clamped between said parts, and open-work filling of plastic material cemented to said backing of wire-gauze, sub1. V
stantially as described. A
2. A panel for the case of piano-fortes, organs, dtcwcomposed of an exterior frame, a
lining or backing of wire-gauze, an open-work filling of plastic material cemented to said backing of wire-gauze, and ornamental figures integral with and cast in relief uponsaid openi work filling, substantially as described. 3. A panel for the case of piano-fortes, or-
gans, Stc., composed of an exterior frame, a
lining or backing of wire-gauze, an open-work` filling of plastic material cemented to said f Vbacking of wire-gauze, a layer or coating of cement applied to the back of said gauze for I anchoring said filling in cemented position,
and ornamental figures integral with andcast in relief upon said open-work filling, snbstan-u tially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my` invention I have signed my name in the pres- Inu ence of two subscribing witnesses. i l i c. E. 'rHEoDoR sTEINwAY.`
