Description
Oct. 20, 1964 E. G. HULTGREN l 3,153,479
LIPSTICK DEVICE Filed Jan. 29, 196s4 United States Patent O 3,153,479 LlPSTlCK DEVICE Eric G. Hultgren, 49 S. Turkey Hill Road, Westport, Conn. Filed Jan. 29, 1963, Ser. No. 2%,74'6 2 Slaims. (Cl. 20d-56) The present invention relates to a lipstick device and is an improvement on my Patent No. 2,999,585.
In said patent the lipstick device is provided with an inner cylindrical member having a longitudinal slot in one side thereof and a venting panel in the opposite side thereof for facilitating `the movement of a lips-tick carrier Within the cylindrical member by means of a rotatable sleeve mounted on the cylindrical member. This construction was an advance over the prior art.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a lipstick device having a construction which is an improvement over the lipstick device of my prior patent.
This is accomplished by providing the inner member of the lipstick device with a pair of opposed longitudinal slots and providing ythe lipstick carrier with a pair of pins projecting therefrom with the ends extending through said slots and having spaced spiral grooves formed on the interior of the `slee-ve so as to cooperate With said pins and lift both sides of the carrier simultaneously and by providing vent openings on both sides of each Yof the slots so as to vent the inner member and permit easier sliding of the carrier within the cylindrical member as it is slid therealong.
Other features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the specification and claims when considered in connection with the accompanying `drawings in 'which `FIGURE 1 is a longitudinal section of the device taken through the vertical slots.
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device taken from the left of FIG. l.
FIG. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of FIG. l looking from the right of FIG. l.
FIG. 4 is a sectional view through opposed vent holes in the inner member.
FIG. 5 is a sectional view taken along line 5-5 of FIG. 1.
As shown in the drawings, the lipstick device cornprises a cylindrical inner member 11 of plastic material having a transverse Wall 12 at one end closing the member. The other end of the cylindrical member is opened and is adapted to receive a lipstick 13, shown in dot and dash lines, which may be projected therefrom or retracted Within the member. j
The lipstick is carried by carrier 14 which has a pin 15 extending therethrough and projecting from opposite sides thereof. The ends ofthe pin are adapted to pass through opposed longitudinally extending slots 16, 17 formed in the side Walls of the inner member. The slots 16, 17 extend `from a point spaced 'from the closed end and extend longitudinally along the member. Preferably, the lslot -16 extends to the free end of the member as shown at 16e. At the end of the desired movement of the carrier in retracted or projected positions, the slots are provided with lateral extensions 16a, 1Gb, 17a, 17b
into which the endsof the pin canbe moved to prevent inadvertent longitudinal movement from said positions.
To operate the carrier from retracted to projected position, a lsleeve 1S is rotatably mounted on the inner member and is preferably held in place by having a shoulder `18a at the outer end which is adapted to snap under longitudinal slot, only and forming opposed vent panels a cooperating shoulder 19a on the inner member, the -opening 16C at the end of longitudinal slot 16 providing sullicient resiliency in the outer end of the cylindrical member to permit the sleeve to be assembled therewith.
The sleeve is provided with a pair of spaced helical grooves 2li, 21' -on the inner surfacethereof, as shown by the dot and dash lines in FIG. 1, cooperating with the ends of the pin so that upon rotation of the sleeve with respect to the inner member, the carrier will be simultaneously lifted at both sides thereof by the groove to move the lipstick uniformly in the cylindrical member.
To ifacilitate the smooth action of the carrier of the lipstick, the present invention provides a plurality of venting apertures 22 on each side of the longitudinal slots, which apertures extend for substantially the length of the inner member and ttorm a venting panel on opposite sides of the inner member so as to vent the inner member during the movement of the carrier as it is slid along the bore ,of the cylindrical member by the relative rotation of the sleeve.
I have found that, by providing the two slots in the inner member and the two venting panels, greatly improved movement of the carrier in the bore of the inner member by the sleeve is achieved.
Variations and modifications may be made within the scope of the claims and portions of the improvements may be used Without others.
I claim:
1. In a lipstick device having a lipstick carrier movable therein, an inner tubular member of plastic material adapted to receive said lipstick carrier, said inner member having a transverse Wall forming a closure for one end thereof and provided with a pair of opposed straight longitudinal slots in the side wall, at least one of said slots extending `from adjacent .the Wall to the open end of the member, said tubular member having a plurality of longitudinally spaced vent openings in the side wall spaced from but closely adjacent each side of each longitudinal slot, only and forming a vent panel extending or a substantial distance along the member intermediate the ends thereof to lfacilitate movement of said lipstick carrier along the inner member.
2. A lipstick device comprising an inner cylindrical member of plastic material having a lipstick carrier slidable therein, said inner cylindrical member having a trans- Verse wall forming a closure for one end thereof and provided with a pair of opposed straight longitudinal slots in the side Wall, at least one of said slots extending from adjacent the wall to the open end of the member, pin means projecting from opposite sides of said carrier with the end-s thereof extending through said slots, and a sleeve rotatable on said cylindrical member and having a pair of helical grooves for engaging the ends of said pin means :for moving the carrier along the inner member in response to `rotation of the sleeve on said i11- ner member, said cylindrical inner member havinga plurality of longitudinally spaced vent openings in the side wall spaced from but closely adjacent each side of each extending for a substantial distance along the member intermediate the endsthereof to facilitate movement of said lipstick carrier' along the inner member.
