NIT'nD STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JUNIUS R. SUMMERSON, OF DUBLIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO DAVID T. MARTIN, OF PULASKI P. 0., VIRGINIA.
PULVERIZING ATTACHMENT F.OR- PLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.
314,982,6211186. March 31, 1885.
Application filed November 17, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, JUNIUs R. SUMMERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Dublin, in the county of Pulaski and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulverizer Attachments for Plows, of which the following is a description.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pulverizer attached to a plow. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
My invention relates to pulverizer attachments for plows; and it consists in the detailed construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described, by which the sod is broken up and pulverized as quickly as it is turned over by the plowshare, which may be readily applied to plows already in use, and which cannot easily be broken by coming in contact with stones or rocks.
In the drawings similar letters indicate corresponding parts. i
A is a bolt passing through the plow-beam and provided with the double eye a and pin a, forming a hinge with the single eye I) on the end of the arm B, which extends backward and is provided with a slotted end, I), which slopes downward and is also bent outward at an angle corresponding with the slope of the mold-board of the plow. A hole, 12 is also provided at the extremity of the slotted end I) for attaching the tension-rod.
are cutters inserted in the slotted end I) for pulverizing the sod.
D is the tension-rod, one end of which engages with the double-tree of the plow. The other end is fastened to the spring E.
F is a short rod connecting the spring-box c with the hole 12 in the end of arm B.
G is a spring, one end of which is attached 0 to the plow-beam by the bolt A. The other end passes through. a guide, 9, affixed to the arm B, and keeps it pressed downward, so that the cutters 0 break up the sod as quickly as it is .turned over. 5
The tension-rod D, connecting the end of arm B with the doubletree, keeps the draft central, while the spring allows the cutters to draw back and pass overlarge stones or other hard substances which may be met with in 5') plowing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a plow, the arm 13, provided with single eye I), slotted end b, and hole 6 bolt A, provided with double eye a and pin a, cutters O, tension-rod D, spring E, provided with spring'boX e, and rod F, substantially as described and shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a plow, the arm B, provided with single eye b, slotted end b, and hole b, bolt A, provided with double eye a and pin a, cutters G, tension-rod D, provided 35 with a spring and connecting the end of arm 13 with the double-tree of the plow, and spring G, attached to the plow-beam and adapted to press the cutters downward against the sod, substantially as described and shown, and for the purpose set forth.
Ron'r. KIRKWOOD, B. T. Soorr.
