A. J. ROSS.
PLOW.
No. 357,100. Patented Feb. 1,1887.
9.2. uuml r ma? y g "I" n '3....11 um ffaw J UNITED STATES i PATENT OFFICE.
. ALBERT J. ROSS, OF HOLLIS, TEXAS.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION formingv part of Letters Patent No. 357,100, dated February l, 1887.
l Aplilication led November 4, 1886. Serial No. 2111992. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:V
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. Ross, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hollis, in the county of Madison and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referenceA being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawingsis arepresentation ofa side elevation. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on line x x, Fig. l. Fig.'3 is a rear elevation. Fig. 4 is a portion of a plan view, and Fig. 5 is a portion of a bottom View of the beam.
My invention relates to plows; and it consists in the construction and novel combinarecess, F, when the two parts are joined, said parts B O being secured together by bolts G.
H I are the plow-handles, which are secured to the plow-beam, near the rear end of the latter, by bolts, and are preferablylet into recesses J in the outer faces of the plow-beams.
The plow-standard K is hinged or pivoted onl a double crank rod, L, the journals of which rod have their bearings in the plow-beam near the front end of the throat or recess F. The front wall of the recess F- inclines from above downwardly and rearwardly, while the rear wall of said recess F is parallel with said front wall. The recess F is slightly enlarged along the track of the double crank to permit the latter to move through its arc when the plow-point M strikes or meetsV with an obstruction, and also after the plow-point passes ,over the obstruction and is being returned to its normal yposition by the spring N. The upper end of the springnN is connected with the plow-standard K, which latter extends some vnear its front end.
distance above the plow-beam, in order to provide sufficient leverage for the spring N.
A perforated plate or bar of metal, P, is connected to the lower end of the spring N, and this plate P is retained in a bifurcation or recess, Q, in the rear end of the plow-beam bya transverse rod, R, which is 's inserted into aligned holes S in the rear end of the plowbeam, and is passed through either one of the holes in the plate I?, as may be necessary to regulate the tension of the spring. The strength of the spring should be regulated in accordance with the size of the lplow and the strength of the team employed to draw the plow. Y
As a modification, I may and do pivot the plow-standard to the outer face of the plowbeam instead of within the recess F, in which case the plow-standard is pivoted to a singlecrank instead of to a double-crank rod. The plow-beam is provided with a gage-wheel, T,
A slotted plate, U, is secured upon the plow-beam so that the slot in the plate will be aligned with the recess or f throat in the beam, its object being to serve as a wear-plate to protect the plow-beam at this point and prevent it from being worn away by the action of the pivoted or hinged plowstandard.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. The combination, with the plow-beam,of the plow-standard hinged to a crank-rodjournaled in the plow-beam, the tension-spring connected to the plow-standard and provided with the adjusting-plate, and the key or rod l
