Be it known that I, GEORGE MURDOOH, of

Brooklyn, in thecounty of Kings and State of of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

My invention is an improvement in the class of ovens adapted for making or revivifying boneblack; and it consists in a certain combination of part-s, as hereinafter described and claimed.

For convenience, and to economize space in carrying my improvement into practical effect, I propose to build two sets of furnaces and ovens in one stack, the said sets being placed back to back upon the opposite sides ofa division-wall, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.

A is a furnace, at the side of which are placed three or more ovens, B, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and which is provided with a door, C, a grate, D, and an ash-pit, E, in the ordinary manner. Each oven B is provided With a chamber, F, to receive t-he bone-black, which chamber has an inclined floor, G, so that the bone-black can be'readily withdrawn through the discharge-opening H in the front wall of the oven. 'The discharge-opening H is closed by a sliding gate, I, or other .suitable door. The oven B is provided with a door, J, through which the bones or foul boneblack is introduced. The doors .I I of the ovens and receiving-chambers B F are applied to an iron plate, K, secured in place by stayrods L, which also serve to strengthen the ovens. The lower parts of the side walls of each oven B are drawn inward, forming a narrow bottom, to which a grate-like form is given by the tie-bricks M. The tie-bricks M are placed at a little distance from each other,

and are strengthened in position by iron bars N, placed beneath them and built into the walls.

Upon the bottom of the ovens B are placed sheet-iron slides O, to prevent the contents of the said ovens from dropping out before the burning has been completed. The outer ends of the slides O project through an opening in the lowerpart of or below the doors J, so that the ovens can be drawn without opening the Said doors and admitting air. In the walls, at the sides of the ovens B, are formed fines P,. into which lead small upwardly-inclined passages Q from the said ovens. The openings of the lower passage Q in the combustion-chamber ofthe furnace A are covered by a wall, R, placed at a little distance from the said openings, as shown in Figs. l and 2.

S are the covers of the ovens B, which covers also serve as a part of the bottom of the flue T, leading from the upper part of the combustion-cham ber ofthe furnace A to the smokestack U, and into which the ilues P open, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

V is the cover of the flue T, which is kept in place by the stay-rods L. Vith this construction the contents of the oven B next the furnace A will be fired from the said furnace by heat passing through the division-wall, and

each succeeding oven will be red from the preceding one in the same manner, the smoke and the ncombustible gases generated by the combustion of the animal matter upon and in the bones, and the oil and other substances in the bone-black being rebnrned, escaping through the passages Q and flues P into the furnace-flue T, and passing thence into the smoke-stack U.

I do not claim, broadly, a bone-.black oven or retort arranged alongsidea furnace proper, nor one through or around which the products of combustion may pass, nor one contracted" at the bottom and provided with a device for controlling the discharge of contents.

Having thus'described my invention, I claim y as new andv desire to secure by Letters Patentl. lIn a bone-black Oven, the combination,
