Be it known that I, THOMAS M. PLATTS, a citizen of the-United States, residing at New ark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strap-Punching lnlachines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Thisinvention relates to that class of punching-machines for perforating leather straps, &c., having the hollow punch arranged upon a reciprocating bar and operating in connection with a presser-foot and feed, the object of the invention being to facilitate and perfect the operation of punching or perforating.
The invention consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, comprised in four sheets, in which like letters and figures of reference indicate correspond ing parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine, showing the relation of the several parts thereof. Fig. 2 is an end View showing especially thepunch, presser-foot, and feed. Fig. 3 is aplan of the table or bed-plate, a section of the arm of the machine being taken through line 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail illustrating a portion of the feed-driving mechanism. Fig. 5 illustrates a ratchet'and-pawl attachment of said driving mechanism, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a punch-bearing adapted to be changed in position.
In said drawings A is a bedplate having preferably three legs, a a a, adapted to be secured upona bench, B. These raise the said plate considerably above said bench to allow for certain feeding mechanism. Upon said bed A is formed or secured an overhanging arm, 0, which provides bearings for a horizontal punch-bar-operating shaft, D. At one end of said shaft D is arranged a driving-wheel, E, which may be actuated by abelt or by a crank handle, 12. Contiguous to the driving-wheel ll, 1884. (No model) upon said shaft is arranged a crank or eccentrio, 0, and at the opposite end thereof is arranged a crank-wheel, e. The overhanging end of the arm Gfurnishcs bearings for the vertical snaft or bar f, said bar being actuated to a reciprocating movement by the crank 6, through the medium of a C1tl'll -13l1l, a horizontally-sliding plate, 5/, connected by said pin 69 to the crank, and a vertically-sliding portion, 72, carrying the said plate 9 in a groove therein and sliding in a vertical slot in the arm. (Shown in Fig. 2.) The said portion It holds the reciprocating punch-bar, the latter being ad- 6 justably secured in a perforation or opening therein by a setscrew, It. The said bar may be raised or lowered in its bearings to suit the punch-disk hereinafter mentioned.
To engage the strap on the upper side and 70 force it into engagement with the feed-wheel, so that the latter will cause said strap to travel forward at each movement thereof, I provide a presser-foot wheel, G, adj ustably secured on a vertically-sliding bar, H, sliding in bearings a a. Said presser-foot is raised from engagement by a cam-lever, 'u, fulcrumed on the bar and resting on the bearin g a. Said presserfoot is held firmly againstthe strap by a spring, 10, arranged around said bar and bearing against the bearing a and an adjustable piece, 2, secured to and moving with said bar. Said adjustable piece is provided with a flat side, i which engages with the flat face of the arm 0. It is thereby prevented from turning, and, be- 8 ing rigidly secured to the bar H, the latter and the presser-foot secured thereon are prevented from turning in and on their respective bearings. By setting the adjustable piece more or less near the bearing a the pressure of the presser-foot is varied.
Beneath the bed-plate A, working in bearings 9' 3' the latter being preferably in the leg a, is arranged the shaft 7t, having at one end the crank Z and at the other a slotted arm, m. 5 (Shown more clearly in Fig. 4..) Said slotted arm is connected with the eccentric c by the connecting-rod n and straps 0. The crank-pin p of the crank Z carries a pawl, g, which engages a ratchet-wheel, r, (Figs. 1 and 5,) the pawl being held into engagement with the ratchet by the spring 8. Said ratchet-wheel is secured upon and revolves with the feedwheel Fin the bearings t. The said feed-wheel projects slightly above the bed-plate, and has an intermittent motion received from the ratchet and pawl attachments, as will be understood. The surface of the wheel may be roughened, as indicated in Fig. 1; but when it is desired to work on leather finished on both sides, I provide a wheel the frictional surface of which is covered with a band of rubber or other soft flexible substance suitable for the purpose.
Upon the bed-plate Abeneath the punch is arranged arevolving disk, 3. (Shown in sectional detail in Fig. 6.) Said disk is provided with a shank, 3, and the bed-plate A is suitably perforated to receive said shank and a setscrew. Said set-screw engages with the shank and holds the disk in position. When the punch-bearing, (indicated in Fig. 3by 5,) becomes worn or deeply cut, the disk may be readily readjusted by loosening the set'screw, turning the disk to a new bearing, and then again securing the parts.
To bring the strap to be perforated into proper relation to the punch, I provide ad- 2 5 justable guides 6 6, which are arranged on a right and left hand screw, 7, working between bearings 8 8, and provided with a finger-piece, 10, which last when turned causes the guides 6 6 to move from a center in line with the punch equally in opposite directions, so that the said guides will always stand at equal distance from said center and the center of the strap be perforated. The screw 11 bearing against the center of the fingerpiece enables the screw and guides to be readily removed from their bearings,when necessary, by simply loosening the same. The crankshaft k is given a rockingmotion by means of an arm, m, projecting from the end thereof, to which arm theconnect-ingrod n is adj ustably secured by means of a bolt and nut, the bolt working in a slot, 12, in said arm. The connectingrod is given a reciprocating motion by means of the eccentric c, which motion is transmitted to the arm at and feed-shaft k. The crank on said shaft, operating the pawl, causes the same to move the ratchet and feed wheels intermittently, as will be understood. The connecting-rod, being adjustably secured to the arm m, can be moved toward or from the shaft k, and by this arrangement the machine is adapted to make the perforations in the strap at any desired distances apart, the distances apart of said perforations being increased by securing the connectingrod to the arm at a reduced distance from the rocking shaft. The arm is provided with graduationmarks 13, and the rod n with a gage, 14, movable therewith to enable the operator to readily adjust the machine to perforate the strap at the desired distances.
Having thus described the invention, whatI claim as new is 1. The combination,inapunching-machine, of the guides 6 6, arranged on a'right-and-left screw, the bearings 8 8 of the bed-plate, a suitable finger-piece, 10, and a screw, 11, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a punching-machine, the combination of the horizontal shaft D, actuating the vertically -sliding piece, said vertically-sliding piece, the barf, secured in said sliding piece by the set-screw h, and the punch, all said parts being arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a punching-machine, the combination of the arm C,presser-foot bar H, bearingsu u,
adjustable piece 2, bearing against the face of the said arm and preventing the presserwheel from turning, the spring 10, and said presser wheel, all said parts being arranged and operating substantially as set forth.
4. In a punching-machine,the combination, with the rocking shaft is, actuating the feeding mechanism intermittently, ofa slotted and graduated arm secured on one end of said shaft, a connecting-rod, a bolt and nut, and a gage moving with said rod, substantially as set forth.
5. In a punching-machine,the combination, with a bed plate carrying a reciprocating punch, and having a series of perforations, one perforation to receive the shank of a bearing-disk, and the other a set-screw, of said reciprocating punch, said bearing-disk having a shank, and a setscrew to hold said shank in its perforation, said parts being arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
