To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Norms KING DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillsboro, in the county of San Mateo and State of California, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Spacing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in spacing machines, and the invention has for its principal objects to provide a machine which will accurately and uniformly position a tool relative to the material to be operated on, one which is capable of adjustment to vary the spacing thereof, one which is adapted for movement with accuracy in either direction, and one constructed in such manner that the tool carrying carriage is locked from movement while the tool is operating in the material.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a top plan view of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1, disclosing the slidably mounted tool carrying carriage, the clutch mechanism and the means for operating the tool and clutch mechanism. Fig. 4: is an enlarged side elevation of the carriage and clutch mechanism, disclosing more fully the clutch controlling cam and plunger. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the mechanism for controlling the movement of the carriage, and disclosing more fully the mechanism for permitting the carriage to remain stationary while the tool is operating. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is an end view of one of the material clamps. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of one of the material clamps.

ignate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 designates a substantially oblong, open-topped supporting frame, provided with legs 2, and slidably mounted on said supporting frame is a tool carrying carriage, the same comprising a base 3 provided with guide flanges el which engage the inner side edges of the frame and guide the carriage in its movement on the frame, and extending upwardly from the base 3 are the spaced standards 5 and 6 connected by a transverse member 7; the standard 5 is slightly bowed outwardly and is bifurcated at its upper end forming journals 8 and 9, and said standard 6 is also foamed with a journal 10 adjacent its upper en Rotatably mounted in the journals 8, 9 and 10 is a shaft 11, and keyed to said shaft and positioned between the journals 8 and 9 is a cam 11 which operates an eccentric coupling 12 surrounding the same, and to which is pivotally mounted the upper end of a vertical shaft 13 slidably mounted in a bore 14 in the standard 5, and said shaft carries on its lower end a punch or other suitable tool 15. Secured to the shaft 11 is a beveled gear 16 which intermeshes with a corresponding gear 17 carried by the upper end of a shaft 18 rotatably mounted in a bore 19 formed in the transverse member 7, and said shaft carries on its lower end a beveled gear 20 which intermeshes with a corresponding gear 21 carried by a journal 22 and said gear is slidable longitudinally of a shaft 23 and is locked to rotate therewith by a key 24: carried by the gear 21, and which operates in a groove 25 formed longitudinally of the shaft. The shaft 23 extends longitudinally of the frame and is rotatably mounted in bearings 26, and said shaft carries on one end abeveled gear 27 which intermeshes with a corresponding gear 28 mounted on a rotatable power shaft 29 which is driven from any suitable source of power. Secured to rotate with the shaft 29 is a disk 30 carrying a guide 31 in which is positioned an adjustable screw-threaded member 32 carrying a stubshaft 33 on which is rotatably mounted a crank 34 pivoted to a cross head 35 slidably mounted between tracks 36 carried by the frame. Secured to the cross head is a shaft 37 which extends through and is slidably mounted relative to the end plate 38 of a frame, and said end plate is connected by threaded rods 39 with a corresponding end plate 40 to which is connected a shaft 41 mounted to reciprocate in bearings 42 carried by the frame, and said shaft extends beneath the tool carrying carriage. To the end of the shaft 37 is secured a plunger 43, to the opposite faces of which are'secured buffers of resilient material 44, which contact with the inner surfaces of the end plates 38 and 40 on the reciprocation of the plunger and reciprocate the shaft 41. The reciprocation of the end plates is limited by the stops 45 'slidably mounted on a support 46 secured to the frame,and through said stops reciprocate the shafts 37 and 41. The stops are connected at their upper and lower ends by screw shafts 46 and 47 which are oppositely threaded at their opposite ends and said shafts are rotatably mounted at their ends in the respective journals 48 and 49 and are held from lengthwise movement by the collars 50. The shaft 46 carries a hand wheel 51, and also has mounted thereon a sprocket 52 which is connected by a chain 53 with a corresponding sprocket 54 mounted on the shaft 47.
By grasping the hand wheel 51 and rotating the same, it will be apparent that the shafts 46 and 47 will be rotated and the stops will be moved toward or from each other, which will permit a greater or less movement of the end plates 38 and 40. The stops will permit of a fine adjustment of the movement of the end plates while the screwthreaded member 32 may be adjusted to regulate the throw of the crank arm when a greater change of movement of the end plates is necessary.
Secured to the opposite end of the shaft 11 from the cam 11 is the hub portion of an arm 55, carrying a suitable headed stud 56 which projects through the curved slot 57 formed in the surface of a cam 58 loosely mounted on said shaft between the hub portion of the arm 55 and the standard 6. The cam 58 operates on a roller 59 carried by a plunger 60 which is slidably mounted on a guide 61 formed on the base 3, and said plunger carries at its lower end an adjustable screw 62 which operates on one end of a clutch frame 63 pivoted, as at 64, to the base 3, and said frame carries at its opposite end a semi-cylindrical clutch member 65 which is adapted on the depression of the plunger to engage the shaft 41 and grasp the same tightly between a corresponding semi-cylindrical clutch member 66 depending downwardly from the frame 3. The inner faces of said clutch members are lined with a suitable gripping surface 67 preferably leather. A spring 68 encircling said plunger 60 forces the same upwardly against the face of the cam 58.
Secured to the frame adjacent the standard 5 and extending thereon the length of travel of the tool carrying carriage, are the brackets 69, carrying the slotted guide 70 and on which is slidably mounted the slotted end supports 71 on whichthe material to be worked is positioned. The supports are retained in their adjusted position on said guide 70 by the bolts 72, which extend through the brackets and are adapted to slide in the slot in said guide. The adjustable bolts 73 carried by the supports 71 operate on a trackway 74 secured to the brackets 69 and enable the ends of the supports to be raised or lowered. A central support 75 is stationarily mounted on the central bracket 69.
The material to be worked is retained in position on the supports by the eccentrically pivoted clamps 76 which clamp the material tightly on the supports.
The parts being assembled as in the drawings, and power being applied to rotate the drive shaft in the direction of the arrow, the machine operates in the following manner:The shaft 23 being rotated through. the gears 27 and 28 causes the rotation of the shaft 11 and arm 55, and the stud 56 carried by the arm on contacting with the end of the slot 57 will cause the cam to rotate,.which will force the plunger 60 downwardly and the clutch member into engagement with the shaft 41. Immediately after the engagement of the clutch member with the shaft, the plunger 43 will have been moved forwardly by the rotation of the disk 30 and will be forced into contact with the plate 40 on the shaft 41, and will push the same and said shaft 41 and tool carrying carriage forwardly until the end plate contacts with the forward stop 45. As soon as the tool carrying carriage has been advanced, the shaft 11 thereof will have rotated a sufficient distance that the cam 11 carried thereby will force thetool 15 downwardly to operate on the material clamped in'position on the supports 71 and 75. At approximately the same time as the tool carrying carriage has been advanced and the tool has been forced in contact with the material, the
plunger 43 is drawn rearwardly by the rotation of the disk 30 and as the plunger 43 thereon is about to contact with the end plate 38, the cam 58 will have completed its movement over the roller 59 and the clutch member 65 will be released from the shaft 41, and permit the shaft to be drawn rearwardly by the plunger 43, until the end plate 38 contacts with the rear stop 45. When the cam 58 has about completed its movement over the roller 59, the tool has performed its function and is withdrawn from the material. On the next forward movement of the plunger 43, the same oper ations as above explained take place in the manner stated. The movement of the car-- riage may be reversed, by reversing the direction of rotation of the drive shaft, andthe above mentioned operations take place in the manner stated, eXcept that the clutch mechanism is thrown into engagement with the shaft 41 on the rearward movement thereof, and the shaft operates free of the carriage on its forward movement.
It will be apparent that on each movement of the carriage the tool carried thereby will be positioned to operate on the work a uniform distance from the last operation, and by reversing the movement of the carriage, the same is moved to position the tool to operate in the places previously worked.
By my improved construction, I have provided a spacing machine which is capable of operation in a forward or reverse direction of movement over the material, one which will accurately position the tool to operate on the material a uniform distance from the last operation, and in which the movement of the tool carrying carriage may be varied and one in which the tool carrying carriage is locked from movement when the tool is operating in the material.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a fixed track, a carriage slidable along said track, means adjustable at will for intermittently feeding the carriage along the track, a tool carried by the carriage, means for supporting the material to be operated on by said tool, and independent means for positioning the tool into operative engagement with the material during the non-movement of said carriage on said track.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a fixed track, a carriage slidable along said track, a tool carried by the carriage, means adjustable at will for intermittently feeding the carriage along the track in either direction, means for supporting the material to be operated on by said tool, independent means for positioning the tool into operative engagement with the material during the idle period of said carriage on said track, and means for locking the carriage from movement during the operation of the tool in the material.
3. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a fixed track, a carriage slidable along said track, a tool carried by the carriage, means adjustable at will for intermittently feeding the carriage along said track in either direction, means for adjusting the movement of said feeding means, means for supporting the material to be operated on by said tool, and means for positioning the tool into operative engagement with the material during the idle period of said carriage on said track.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with a supporting track, a carriage slidable along said track, a tool carried by said carrlage, reciprocating means for 1ntermittently feeding said carriage along said track, locking means carried by said carriage for engaging said reciprocating means on the movement thereof in one direction, and means for positioning the tool in operative engagement with the material to be worked during the idle period of said carriage on said track.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with a supporting track, a carriage slidable along said track, a tool carried by said carriage, means for operating said tool, reciprocating means for feeding said carriage along said track, means carried by said carriage for engaging said reciprocating means on the movement thereof in one direction, means for intermittently reciprocating said reciprocating means, and means for adjusting the movement of said reciproeating means.
6. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a supporting track, a carriage slidable on said track, a tool carried by said carriage, means for operating said tool, reciprocating means for feeding said carriage along said track, means for locking said carriage and reciprocating means together immediately before the movement of said reciprocating means in one direction, means for intermittently operating said reciprocating means, and means for adjusting the movement of said operating means.
7. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a supporting track, a carriage slidable along said track, a tool carried by said carriage, means for operating the tool, reciprocating means for feeding said carriage along said track, means for locking said carriage and said reciprocating means together on the movement of said reciprocating means in one direction, means for intermittently operating said reciprocating means, means for adjusting the movement of said operating means, and means for adj usting the movement of said reciprocating means.
8. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a supporting track, a carriage slidable along said track, a tool carried by said carriage, means for operating said tool, intermittently operated reciprocating means for feeding said carriage along said track, a clutch mechanism carried by said carriage for engaging said reciprocating means, and means associated with said tool operating means for actuating said clutch mechanism to engage said reciprocating means during one movement thereof and while said tool is operating in the material.
9. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a supporting track, a carriage slidable along said track, a tool carried by said carriage, means for operating the tool, reciprocating means for feeding said carriage along, said track, means operated by said tool operating means for locking'said carriage and said reciprocating means together on the movement ofsaid reciprocat ing means in one direction, means --for intermittently operating said reciprocating means means for regulating the movement of said operating means, adjustable stops for limiting the movement of said reciprocating means, and means" for simultaneonsly adjusting said stops.
10. In a machine of the class'described, the combination with a supporting track, a
