(Cl. 112228) This invention relates to sewing machines and, in particular, to bobbin cases used as. hooked point loop takers or loopers in single needle lockstitch sewing machines; to which use, however, it is not necessarily restricted.
The conventional loop-taker, precision machined of fine steel to accurate proportions and balance from its weighted hub to its fragile loop seizing point, is a short! lived, costly item. As a faulty hook will skip stitches, the loop taker must be replaced periodically whenever its Vulnerable point accidentally breaks or becomes too dull through normal wear.
An object of the invention, therefore, is to supply a long felt need in the industry to develop improved means for sharply reducing operational expenses by extending the life of these hitherto expendable bobbin cases.
An important feature of the invention is an auxiliary hook which is secured over the original point either as a protection against damage and wear or as a replacement for an inoperative point. This auxiliary hook triples the effective use of conventional bobbin hooks.
Further features and advantages of the invention will be apparent in the following detail description and the accompanying drawings which illustrate preferred embodiments of the invention, wherein FIG. 1 is a disassembled outside perspective view of a used conventional one-piece loop-taker body or base with a worn hook and a flanged auxiliary hook prior to assemy;
FIG. 2 is an outside perspective view illustrating the manner in which the auxiliary hook is adapted to fit on the base shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a top inside perspective view of the auxiliary hook and the base in the partially assembled position of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 showing the complete assembly of the auxiliary hook held in position on the base by a tension spring and a collar;
FIG. 5 is a perspective View of a modification of the auxiliary hook shown in FIG. 1 provided with an extended wall portion;
FIG. 6 is an outer perspective view of the FIG. 5 modified auxiliary hook mounted in operative position between a tension spring and a body or base;
FIG. 7 is a reverse outer perspective view to that of FIG. 5 showing the cover or collar screwed to the base over the auxiliary hook wall in completely assembled position;
FIG. 8 is a side elevation of an auxiliary hook similar to that of FIG. 5;
FIG. 9 is a perspective view of a modification of the auxiliary hook shown in FIG. 8; and

Reference will now be made to the drawings. The conventional Singer machine No. 251 bobbin case looptaker illustrated in FIGS. 1-7 has a cup shaped body portion or open Walled chamber 30 having ends defining a substantially triangular cut-away portion. Extending downwardly from the chambers base 31 is a cylindrical hub 32. An integral main beak or hook portion 33 normally terminates in a fragile loop seizing point 34 disposed above the base. The point is here considered to be worn down to a degree excluding further dependable use.
In detached position from the loop taker shown in FIG. 1 is an auxiliary hook 35 having a sharp new point 36. This replacement part which may be minutely machined and molded from any hard metal fits tightly over the upper body portion and is superimposed over the main beak portion. When so augmented, the life of a damaged loop-taker body can be indefinitely extended by being renewed with new auxiliary hooks at periodic intervals whenever necessary.
The substantially V-shaped auxiliary book 35 has a lower leg portion 37 with folded right-angled extensions forming bottom flanges 38, 38 which frictionally engage bottom surface 39 of lower chamber wall- 40. A parallel flange or upper fold 41 engages the base 31 above cut-out 42. A downwardly extending tongue 43 bears against shoulder 44. The opposite end of upper leg portion 45 to that of point 36 has an upstanding ridge 46 which receives the angular edges of an integral boss 47 on upper chamber wall 40a as shown in FIG. 2. A turned front edge 73 which may be rolled or rounded extends along the inner side of leg 45. When mounted in operative position, this edge overlaps or otherwise completely covers the underside of hook 33 and point 34 to prevent the thread being cut or broken by entering therebetween.
When the auxiliary hook is assembled, upper leg 45 including ridge 46 fits under a tension spring 48 and is secured to the body by screws 49 through holes 50 in member 47 Tongle 43 fits under collar 51 and is held in such braced position when the cover is secured to wall 40 as by screws 52 through holes 53.
The auxiliary hook may be constructed in various ways for attachment to the bobbin case or loop taker body 30. In FIG. 5 the lower extensions are shown prior to folding into molded flanges 38a, 38a for engagement with under surface 39 of wall 40 as illustrated in FIGS. 6 and 7. This embodiment 35a is provided with a wide annular extension 54 designed to fit under collar 51 and se cured in aligned position on the body by screws 52 passing through a plurality of aligned holes 55. A tension spring 48 secures the upper leg 45a in the same manner as in FIG. 4.
The auxiliary hook 35b, see FIG. 8, has a shorter extension 54a to that shown in FIG. 5 and is held in place by only one screw 52 through a single hole 55a. The depending extensions of lower leg 38b are here shown bent under leg 37b to form retaining flanges 38b.
The lower leg 370 of auxiliary hook 350 illustrated in FIG. 9 is of similar construction to that shown in FIG. 8. The retaining portion of the upper leg 450, however, is provided with a flange 56 which projects from upstanding ridge 46c and fits over boss 47. Upper leg 45c is positively secured in operative position on the body by screws 49 extending from the overlying tension spring 48 through replacement holes 57 and holes 50 in boss 47.
The 35d auxiliary hook illustrated in FIG. 10 is of basic construction and consists of a substantially triangular body portion 45d, similar to the upper leg portion 45c of FIG. 9, with point 36d disposed at its apex and flange 56a with aligned holes 57a extending from raised ridge 46d. When mounted, point 36d and edge 73 completely covers main hook portion 33-34.
The forms of the invention here described and illustrated are presented merely as examples of how the invention may be embodied, and applied. Other forms, embodiments and applications of the invention, coming within the proper scope of the appended claims, will, of course, suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. An auxiliary hook adapted to be used with a single needle lockstitch looptaker having a base, an arcuate wall extending transversely from said base, said wall having ends defining a cut-away portion therein, one of said ends terminating in a main point, an integral boss disposed on the exterior of said wall and a first means disposed in said boss, said auxiliary hook comprising an arcuate substantially triangular body portion, a loopseizing point forming the apex of said body portion, a ridge extending transversely from said body portion for engagement with said bass, a flange extending from said ridge, said flange being parallel to said body portion and adapted to partially cover said boss, a second means disposed in said flange adapted to align with said first means, said first and second means adapted to cooperate with a securing means to attach said auxiliary hook to said boss and detachably mount said loopseizing point over said main point.
2. An auxiliary hook adapted to be used with a single needle lockstitch looptaker having a base, an arcuate Wall extending transversely from said base, said wall having ends defining a cut-away portion therein, an integral boss disposed on the exterior of said Wall, one of said ends terminating in a main point and the opposite end of said wall terminating in a shoulder, said auxiliary hook comprising a substantially V-shaped body portion having a first and second leg, said first leg terminating in a second point integral therewith and said second leg terminating in a tongue adapted to bearingly engage said shoulder,
a ridge disposed proximate said first leg, said ridge adapted to engage said boss, and flange means carried by said second leg, said flange means adapted to frictionally engage said base and secure said second point in protruding position over said first point as a sharp replacement therefor.
3. An auxiliary hook according to claim 2 wherein one of said flange means extending from one longitudinal side and another of said flange means extends from the opposite side of said second leg, said flange means being adapted to frictionally clamp said second leg to said base between said ends and to clamp said hook to said wall.
4. An auxiliary hook according to claim 2 wherein said tongue comprises a wide annular collar portion and said collar portion is adapted to be mounted on said wall beyond said shoulder.
5. An auxiliary hook according to claim 4 wherein a flange extends from said ridge, said flange being parallel to said body portion and adapted to partially cover said boss.

AN AUXILIARY HOOK ADAPTED TO BE USED WITH A SINGLE NEEDLE LOCKSTICH LOOPTAKER HAVING A BASE, AN ARCUATE WALL EXTENDING TRANSVERSELY FROM SAID BASE, SAID WALL HAVING ENDS DEFINING A CUT-AWAY PORTION THEREIN, ONE OF SAID ENDS TERMINATING IN A MAIN POINT, AN INTEGRAL BOSS DISPOSED ON THE EXTERIOR OF SAID WALL AND A FIRST MEANS DISPOSED IN SAID BOSS, SAID AUXILIARY HOOK COMPRISING AN ARCUATE SUBSTANTIALLY TRIANGULAR BODY PORTION, A LOOPESEZING POINT FORMING THE APEX OF SAID BODY PORTION, A RIDGE EXTENDING TRANSVERSELY FROM SAID BODY PORTION FOR ENGAGEMENT WITH SAID BASS, A FLANGE EXTENDING FROM SAID RIDGE, SAID FLANGE BEING PARALLEL TO SAID BODY PORTION AND ADAPTED TO PARTIALLY COVER SAID BOSS, A SECOND MEANS DISPOSED IN SAID FLANGE ADAPTED TO ALIGN WITH SAID FIRST MEANS, SAID
