Filed May 17, 1963, Ser. No. 281,311 Claims. (Cl. 119-110) This invention pertains to improvements in a quick release rope holder for saddle used especially in the sport of roping.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a second rope holder, commonly referred to as a second loop in roping terminology. As a rule, two ropes are carried on the saddle by a roper so that if he should miss with the first loop he will have easily accessible his second roper or loop.
It is therefore a further object to provide a rope holder on a saddle which is convenient and easily accessible to the roper.
Another object is to provide a quick release rope holder on a saddle so as to make it easier and faster for the roper to draw his second loop.
And it is also an object to provide a quick release rope holder adapted to be mounted on the front 'or rounded side of the saddle.
Further features and advantages of this invention will appear from a detailed description of the drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a front elevation of the rope holder incorporating the features of this invention.
FIG. 2 is a right hand side elevation of the device shown in FIG. 1.
FIG 3 is a plan view of the device shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.
FIG. 4 is a sectional View on the line 4-4 of FIG. 1 showing the device in rope holding position.
FIG. 5 is a view similar to FIG. 4, but showing the device in rope releasing position.
As an example of one embodiment of this invention, there is shown a quick release rope holder for a saddle comprising the body having a rear vertical mounting surface 11 adapted to be secured to the side surface 12 of a saddle 13 by suitable mounting screws 14. A rope carrying support cord 15 is knotted at 16, FIGS. 4 and 5, and extends upwardly in a groove 17 and then inwardly through a passageway 18 and then downwardly through a sloping passageway 19 formed in the body 10. The cord 15, FIG. 4, then loops around the rope 20 to be carried and then upwardly to the groove 21 formed in the body 10. The free end of the cord 15 has a leaded tip 22 which is slidingly received in the vertical bore 23 formed in the top surface 24 of the body 10.
A spring loaded lid or keeper 25 is pivotally mounted on a shaft 26 carried in suitable lugs 27 formed on the body 10. A suitable torsion spring 28 surrounding the shaft 26 serves to normally yieldingly swing the lid 25 downwardly in a counterclockwise direction, as shown in FIGS. 2, 4 and 5 to engage the cord 15 adjacent top 29 of the leaded tip 22 forcing the bottom end 30 of the leaded tip 22 against the portion of the support cord 15 in the passageway 18. Knot 16 of the cord 15 may then be pulled downwardly from the slack position 31 of the cord 15 indicated in broken line in FIG. 4, to thus draw up the cord 15 to bring the rope 20 up tight against the front face 32 of the body 10 holding it firmly in place. It will be noted, FIG. 4, that the lid 25 holds the leaded end 22 in the vertical bore so that downward pull of the rope 20 in the direction indicated by the arrow 33 cannot dislodge the leaded end 22 from the vertical bore 23.
When the pressure of lid 25 is removed by the upward withdrawing of the rope 20 in the direction of See - the arrow 34, FIG. 5, the leaded end 22 comes out of the vertical bore 23 as the cord 15 engages the outer edge 35 of the lid 25 to swing it clockwise upwardly so that the pull of the cord 15 becomes substantially vertically upwardly sufficient to allow the leaded end 22 to slip from the bore 23 to release the free end of the cord and allow it to clear the device to thus free the rope 20. When the pressure of lid 25 is thus removed by withdrawing rope 20, the cord 15 can then be lengthened to make it easier to place the rope 20 into position for the next time it is tobe used. When the rope 20 is pulled upwardly for releasing in the direction of the arrow 34, pressure is exerted on the cord 15 causing it to bind at the points 36, 37 and 38, FIG. 5, to thus prevent slipping of the cord 15 under these conditions.
While the apparatus herein disclosed and described constitutes a preferred form of the invention, it is also to be understood that the apparatus is capable of mechanical alteration without departing from the spirit of the invention and that such mechanical arrangement and commercial adaptation as fall within the scope of the appendant claims are intended to be included herein.
Having thus fully set forth and described this invention what is claimed and desired to be obtained by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A quick release rope holder for saddle comprising in combination:
(a) a body adapted to be secured to the side of the saddle,
(b) a rope support cord having one end fixed to said body,
(0) a vertical bore formed in the top surface of said body removably receiving the other free end of said rope support cord,
(d) a lid pivotally mounted on said body to swing about a horizontal axis to and from said top surface and vertical bore in said body,
(e) and yielding means interacting between said body and said lid to normally urge said lid against said top surface to releasably engage said free end of said rope support cord when said free end is inserted in said vertical bore.
2. A quick release rope holder for saddle comprising in combination:
(a) a body adapted to be secured to the side of the saddle,
(b) a rope support cord having one end fixed to said body,
(0) a vertical bore formed in the top surface of said body removably receiving the other free end of said rope support cord,
(d) a lid pivotally mounted on said body to swing about a horizontal axis to and from said top surface and vertical bore in said body,
(e) yielding means interacting between said body and said lid to normally urge said lid against said top surface to releasably engage said free end of said rope support cord when said free end is inserted in said vertical bore,
(f) said vertical bore being so positioned relative to said lid that upward relative pull on the free end of said rope support cord swings said lid upwardly away from said vertical bore to allow withdrawal of said cord from said body.
3. A quick release rope holder for saddle comprising in combination:
(a) a body adapted to be secured to the side of the saddle,
(b) a rope support cord having one end adjustably attached to said body,
() a vertical bore formed in the top surface of said body removably receiving the other free leaded end of said rope support cord,
(d) a lid pivotally mounted on said body to swing about a horizontal axis to and from said top surface and vertical bore in said body,
(e) and yielding means interacting between said body and said lid to normally urge said lid against said free leaded end of said rope support cord when said free leaded end is inserted in said vertical bore to cause said leaded end to engage said one adjustably attached end to restrain said one end in said body.
4. A quick release rope holder for saddle comprising in combination:
(a) a body having passageways formed therein adapted to be secured to the side of the saddle,
(b) a rope support cord having one end adjustably secured in said passageways formed in said body, (0) a vertical bore formed in the top surface of said body and communicating with said passageways removably receiving the other free leaded end of said rope support cord,
(d) a lid pivotally mounted on said body adapted to swing about a horizontal axis axially of said vertical bore in said body,
(e) yielding means interacting between said body and said lid to normally swing said lid against the top end of said free leaded end of said rope support cord when said free end is inserted in said vertical bore so as to cause bottom end of said leaded end to engage and restrain movement of said cord in said passageways,
(f) said vertical bore being so positioned relative to said lid that upward relative pull on the free end of said rope support cord swings said lid upwardly away from said vertical bore to allow withdrawal of said free leaded end of said cord from said body.
5. A quick release rope holder for saddle comprising in combination:
(a) a body having passageways formed therein adapted to be secured to the side of the saddle,
(b) a rope support cord having one end adjustably secured in said passageways formed in said body, (0) a vertical bore formed in the top surface of said body and communicating with said passageways removably receiving the other free leaded end of said rope support cord,
(d) a lid pivotally mounted on said body adapted to swing about a horizontal axis axially of said vertical bore in said body,
(2) yielding means interacting between said body and said lid to normally swing said lid against the top end of said free leaded end of said rope support cord when said free end is inserted in said vertical bore so as to cause bottom end of said leaded end to engage and restrain movement of said cord in said passageways,
(1'') said vertical bore being so positioned relative to said lid that upward relative pull on the free end of said rope support cord swings said lid upwardly away from said vertical bore to allow withdrawal of said free leaded end of said cord from said body,
(g) said passageways being so formed in said body that said cord pulled through said passageways when said free end of said cord extends downwardly from said body but arrest movement of said cord in said passageways when said free end of said cord extends upwardly from said body in rope holding position.

Claims (1)

1. A QUICK RELEASE ROPE HOLDER FOR SADDLE COMPRISING IN COMBINATION: (A) A BODY ADAPTED TO BE SECURED TO THE SIDE OF THE SADDLE, (B) A ROPE SUPPORT CORD HAVING ONE END FIXED TO SAID BODY, (C) A VERTICAL BORE FORMED IN THE TOP SURFACE OF SAID BODY REMOVABLY RECEIVING THE OTHER FREE END OF SAID ROPE SUPPORT CORD, (D) A LID PIVOTALLY MOUNTED ON SAID BODY TO SWING ABOUT A HORIZONTAL AXIS TO AND FROM SIDE TO P SURFACE AND VERTICAL BORE IN SAID BODY,
