Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GEORGE H. ROEHM, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
ELEVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,887 dated March 17, 1885. Application filed November 26, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. RoEHM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, ref+ erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in elevators; and it consists, solely, of a device for opening and closing the hatchway after the passage of the elevator-platform, both in its ascent and descent, the several features of which will be fully hereinafter set forth.
The mechanism is illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is a side view of the elevator. Fig. II is a hori- I zontal section on line 00.
Similar letters designate like parts in both views.
In the elevator proper I make no change in the construction from those in general use, and the frame A but serves to support the parts necessary to illustrate my invention and take the place of the joists and floor of a building; and, further,I have used only such parts as are essential to exhibit the operation of my device.
13 are the guide-rails, and E the guides to which the platform F is attached. The platform is carried by a rope passing over a pulley at the top of the building, which rope is attached to a beam connected at the top of the guides over the platform. To the side of the frame, corresponding to a joist, are bolted the arms t t, which form bearings for the shaft 7 S. To this shaft are fixedly attached the arms O 0. These arms are attached to the door 0, and the outer ends of these arms support a rod on which are supported a series of weights,n,which are used as a partial counterbalance to the door.
To the inner end of shaft S is fixedly attached the pinion J, and the abutting pinion 1 is loose upon the shaft, and is limited in its movement by friction, the button y,which arrests the movement of the crank w, and the rod 0, which connects the pinion to said crank. The aforesaid pinions engage the double rack G, which is bolted to the side of the guide, so as to engage said pulleys as the platform is moved up or down. The crank it is pivoted to the arm a, which is bolted to the under side of the door, near its center, the button y,on its lower face, serving to prevent the crank from dropping below the center of its axis, and thereby arresting the movement of the pinion, which is connected by the rod '12 to said crank.
To the door 0 is hinged a supplementary door, D. (See Fig. II.) This door is necessary to fill the remaining space which cannot be covered by the other door. The latter is carried by the crank when moved by the pinion in position at aright angle to the former, (sec position Fig. 1,) and when not thus held by the crank it falls by gravity into a horizontal position. The rack has teeth enough to engage the pinions and carry them about one-fourth of a circle.
The two sides of the device are identical, and therefore but one is illustrated.
In Fig. Ithe hatchway is shown open, and the operation will be readily understood. As the platform descends, the outer teeth of the rack engage the pinion I, which causes the crank to move the supplementary door onefourth of a circle out of the way of the guidepost and guides. Then the inner teeth engage the pinion J, which carries the door 0 to a vertical position. The platform passes, and a like rack, attached to the guides above, effects the closing of the hatch way. Thus the double rack carried on the guides of theplatform opens and closes the several hatchways of the floors of a building. The objects are to prevent acoidents and the destruction from fires resulting from open hatchways.
Having fully described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
on shaft S within bearings t t, supplementary door D, hinged to the former, and having an arm, or, attached thereunto, pinionsI J on said shaft, double rack G, attached to platform- 1. The combination of the door G,suspended guides,;oonnection-rod v, and crank w,pivoted In-testimony that I claim the foregoing as to said arm, substantially as described. my own I afiix my signature in presence of two 2. The combination, substantially as set witnesses. forth, of the door 0, supplementary door D, GEORGE E. ROEHM. 5 shaft S, arms 0 o, counterbalance-weights n, Witnesses:
pinions I J, double rack G, connection-rod '0, B. PIOKERING, crank w, and arm 20. SUMNER T. SMITH.
