SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 313,785, dated March 10, 1885.

Application filed February 27, 1884.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. TRUE- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stands for Type-\Vriters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention has relation to a combined type-writer stand and desk, and has for its object the provision of means whereby the stand may be easily and speedily converted into a writing-desk, having the usual sloping surface for writing purposes, and being also provided with means for holding pens, ink-wells, &-c.

My invention consists in the combination, with a platform hinged to the front of a type writer cabinet, and a desk-top hinged to the back of said cabinet, of hinged braces connecting the platform and desk-top, and a counter balancing device attached to the platform and the back of the cabinet, and arranged to counterbalance both the platform and desk-top, all as hereinafter described and specifically claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section. Figs. 2 and 3 are details showing the counterbalance mechanism.

A represents the front, 13 the back, and G the side, of the stand.

D is a platform upon which the type-writer rests, hinged at d to the front A.

E represents a spring-catch, which is secured to the back 13 at b, and is formed with a sloping surface, e, and a sloping shoulder, 0, upon which theplatform D rests when the type-writer (indicated at F) is in position for use.

The back B of the stand is somewhat higher than the front A, and the top edges of the sides of the stand slope down from one to the other, and to the top edge of the back is hinged a desk top or lid, G, at g. This desk-top G is slightly larger than the platform, and when lowered its edges project slightly beyond the front and sides. A brace, H, of metal or other suitable material, is hinged at d to the platform Dand at g to the desk-top G.

H represents a box or casing of suitable construction, secured to the platform D, and

containing a spiral spring, h, and a surrounding drum, 71, upon the outside of which is wound a chain or other flexible connection, L, the other end of which is secured to the back 13 by a staple, k.

A shelf, H is secured to the sides of the stand at an angle, as shown, and serves to re ceive and support the leaf D when swung down within the stand.

The operation is as follows: hen the stand is to be used as a writing-desk, the desk-top rests upon the top of the sides and.front,as indicated in dotted lines, the hinged leaf and the type-writer being swung down within the stand and resting upon the shelf H Now, when itis desired to use the type-writer, it is only necessary to raise the desktop and swing it back somewhat beyond a vertical position. The swinging platform D, being secured to the desk-top by the braces, will swing up into position, depressing the catch E, and resting upon the sloping shoulder c of said catch, the spring meanwhile winding the chain upon the drum and thereby assisting in elevating the type-writer.

\Vhen the type-writer is being swung down within the case, after using, the spring counterbalance acts to prevent a too rapid descent or any jar to the instrument when the platform strikes the shelf H It will be observed that the spring-catch E has a sloping shoulder, the object of which is that the platform D may be forced down past said catch with but slight pressure when lowering the table G.

What I claim as my invention is as follows:

In a cabinet for type-writing machines, the combination, with the platform D, hinged to the front of the cabinet, and the desktop G, hinged to the back of said cabinet, of hinged braces H, connecting said platform and desktop, and a counterbalancing device attached to the platform and to the back of the cabinet, substantially as described, and arranged to sustain or counterbalance both the platform and desk-top, as set forth.
