United States Patent 3,136,964 HAIR CLIPPER ARMATURE MQUNTHNG Matthew G. Andie, Racine, Wrist, assignor to Andie Clipper Co., Racine, Win, a corporation of Wisconsin FiiedrFe'o. 1, 1962, Ser. No. 176,325 2 Claims. (ill. 31%29) This invention relates to a hair clipper armature mounting.
The hair clipper is of the type using a vibratory armature to drive its movable blade. The mounting to which the invention relates not only permits the armature to vibrate in controlled position respecting the poles of the magnet but also provides means whereby the pressure of the movable blade upon the shear plate is conveniently and simply controlled through the vibratory armature.

The case comprises a base 5 and a removable cover 6. Mounted on the bosses 7 and 8 of the base is a three pole magnet frame 10 having an A.C. winding 11 about the middle pole 12. A forwardly extending bracket 13 supports the shear piate 14 across which the movable blade 15 is reciprocable in accordance with conventional practice. Current to the winding 11 is supplied by line cord 16 subject to the control of a switch at 1'7 opened and closed by a manually operable slide 18. I
Alternating current supplied the coil 11 alternately attracts and releases a spring-supported armature 20, the mounting of which will presently be described, An arm 21 of resilient material connectsthe forward free end I of armature with the movable blade 15 both to regulate its tension and to impart motion thereto. 7' The bracket 22 projecting rearwardly from the bac of the frame carries a pintle bolt 23 whereby the armature mounting yoke 25 is pivotally supported. The armature curves at 26 about pintle bolt 23 and has a portion 27 extending forwardly and attached to mounting yoke 25 by a single screw 28 which is disposed on an axis normal to the bolt 23 and to the longitudinal center line: of the hair clipper. The connection between the armature and the bracket 25 is rigid for most purposes but permits limited pivotal movement of the armature about the axis of the screw 28 in a vertical plane which is at right angles to the plane of armature oscillation as magnetically induced.
Bracket 22 has an upstanding arm 29 screw-threaded to receive the adjusting screw 30 which passes through the yoke 25 and through an opening 31 in the forwardly directed end 27 of the armature. It will be observed that the opening 31 is sufiiciently large so that there is no binding between the armature and the adjusting screw 30. A strong compression spring 32 seats at one end against the bracket arm 29 and at its other end against the interior surface of the forwardly directed end 27 of armature ice 2G. The arrangement is such that the yoke 25 and the armature 20 mounted thereon can be moved bodily about the pintle bolt 23. In one direction, the movement is effected by advancing the screw 30 against the bias of spring 32. In the opposite direction of oscillatory adjustment, the movement is effected by spring 32 to the extent that such movement is permitted by backing off screw 36. The effect of the adjustment is to move the armature farther from or closer to the poles of the magnet frame 10.
The use of compression spring 32 in opposition to pressure exerted by the adjusting screw 39 is primarily to eliminate back lash.
Yoke 25 carries a blade tension-adjusting screw 35 which is threaded therein and engages the upper margin 'of the forwardly directed anchored end portion'27 of the armature 20. A lock nut 36 holds this screw in adjustment. As will be apparent from the drawing, the set screw 35 tends to oscillate the entire armature 20 upon its anchorage screw 28 to exert pressure through the resilient arm 21 on the movable blade 15 to hold such blade in the desired pressure contact with the shear plate 14.
V'Vhen the adjusting screw 3t, is fixed in a position which locates armature 26} in the most advantageous position respectingthe poles of the magnet frame 10, the vibratory motor will develop considerable power for the reciprocation of the blade 15 and the precise adjustment of blade pressure by means of set screw 35 assures the proper functioning of the clipper without unnecessary friction loss between the blades.
I claim:
1. In a hair clipper having a casing and a magnet frame therein, the combination of a mounting bracket attached to the frame and projecting rearwardly there from, an upright pintle carried by the bracket, an armature mounting yoke having vertically spaced portions above and below the armature and connected with and pivoted on said pintle, an armature extending past said frame and having a portion reversely curving around the pintle and provided with a forwardly directed end within the yoke, a mounting screw connecting the said portion with said yoke, an armature range adjustor including means for oscillating the yoke and armature about the pintle respecting the bracket, and a tension adjusting screw having a mounting in the yoke and bearing marginally on the armature and constituting means for ad justing the armature respecting the yoke by oscillating the armature about its said mounting screw.
2. A combination according to claim 1 in which the armature range adjuster comprises an adjusting screw in threaded connection with the bracket and having a head externally engaging the yoke, the said end of said armature portion having an opening through which the screw passes,which opening is sufliciently in excess of the size of the screw to permit freedom of movement of the armature subject to said tension adjusting screw, and a spring encircling the range adjustor screw and seated between the bracket and the forwardly directed end of said armature portion.

IN A HAIR CLIPPER HAVING A CASING AND A MAGNET FRAME THEREIN, THE COMBINATION OF A MOUNTING BRACKET ATTACHED TO THE FRAME AND PROJECTING REARWARDLY THEREFROM, AN UPRIGHT PINTLE CARRIED BY THE BRACKET, AN ARMATURE MOUNTING YOKE HAVING VERTICALLY SPACED PORTIONS ABOVE AND BELOW THE ARMATURE AND CONNECTED WITH AND PIVOTED ON SAID PINTLE, AN ARMATURE EXTENDING PAST SAID FRAME AND HAVING A PORTION REVERSELY CURVING AROUND THE PINTLE AND PROVIDED WITH A FORWARDLY DIRECTED END WITHIN THE YOKE, A MOUNTING SCREW CONNECTING THE SAID PORTION WITH SAID YOKE, AN ARMATURE RANGE ADJUSTOR IN-
