WATER-ELEVATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,365, dated February 12, 1861.
To aZZwZLom it may concern:
Be it known that I, P. ANDERSON, of Norwich, in the county of Oh'enango and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Self-Acting Device for IVells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front view of my invention applied to a well; which, together with the framing that holds the working parts, are bisected as indicated by the line Fig. 2. My invention consists in the employment in combination with the buckets and windlass of a well, of a self acting device so made that when a filled bucket has risen to the spout or trough to discharge its contents, the said self acting device will come into operation and change the direction of motion of the windlasses and cause the alternate filled bucket to rise while the empty bucket descends.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a boX or curb which is placed at the top of a well B.
O is a shaft which is placed on the framing of the box or curb, said shaft being provided at one end with a crank D and having two drums E, F placed loosely on it. To the inner end of each drum E, F, a bevel wheel G is attached, and these wheels gear into a wheel H, the shaft a of which is a'ttached to an upright I, on the framing of the box or curb.
The self acting device is made as follows On the shaft O between two wheels Gr, Gr a slide or loose collar, J, is placed, said slide or collar being connected to the shaft by a feather and groove. The ends of the slide or collar are provided with ratchet teeth b, and similar teeth c are formed on concentric projections or hubs 0,' of the wheels G, see Fig. 1. On the slide or collar J, at its center there is a rim c formed circumferentially, and this rim is fitted in the upper end of a lever K, which has its fulcrum at cZ. The lower end of lever K has an arm e projected from each side of it about at right angles and a friction-roller f is also attached to the lower part of the lever, said roller bearing against a spring L which is attached to a bar or lever M just below the lever K. The lever M has a fulcrum pin passing through its center said fulcrum pin as well as that of the lever K being in a vertical bar N in the framing. The lever M is nearly equal in length to the width of the well curb as shown in Fig. l. The spring L has an inverted V-shaped projection g, shown in Fig. l, at its center, the object of which will be hereinafter described. The above parts compose the self acting device which constitutes the essential feature of my improved combination.
On each drum E, F, a rope O is wound, each rope having a bucket P attached to its end by means of a bail as usual. These buckets are each provided with a valve It in their bottoms, the valves opening upward.
On t-he shaft O, a ratchet a', is placed into which a holding pawl j, catches, said pawl beilg attached to the framing of the boX or cur At one side of the boX or curb there is a trough Q, having a discharge spout R, attached. This trough, Q, extends nearly the whole width of the boX or curb, and it has a bail-shaped end S directly at the inner side of it, said rod beingv attached by joints Z0 to the box or curb.
To the upper part of each bucket P, two hooked shaped projections Z Z are attached at opposite points.
The operation is as follows: Motion is imparted to the shaft O, by a band pulley, connected by means of a band with a horse power machine or wind mill or other motor or by hand by turning the crank D. The two drums E, F will be thus rotated in reverse directions, as the wheels Gr Gr both gear into the wheel I-I, consequently one bucket P will descend while the other rises. Motion is communicated to the drums E, F from the shaft C, through the medium of the toothed collar J and hubs cx of the wheels Gr and when one bucket P has nearly reached its highestpoint, one of its hooked shaped projections Z catches under the bail shaped rod S and said bucket is tilted its contents being discharged into the trough Q. The elevated basket while in a horizontal position being still drawn upward, strikes against and throws up the lever M, moving the same so as to oscillate the lever K and cause it to shift the collar J which was in gear With the hub 0 of the wheel Gr that rotates the drum F of theJ elevated basket. By this movement of collar J it Will be disengaged from said hub and be thrown into gear With the hub 0X of the drum E. This movement of the collar J at once reverses the movement of the drums E, F, and the elevated bucket P descends While the other one now filled vvith Water is elevated and as it rises Will be caught by the rod S and tripped so as to leave its contents discharged into trough Q and then by the continued rotation of shaft C, being still farther elevated, said bucket vvill actuate the lever M so as again to oscillate the lever K and again reverse the movement of the drums E, F and consequently that of the buckets. The rod S is raised by each bucket a certain distance before the buckets are tripped in order that the Water may be discharged into the trough, the rod S descending as the bucket descends and resting on steps ax to be in readiness for the next bucket as it rises.
The'lever M it Will be seen, When actuated, strikes the arms e, e of lever K, and the spring L of lever M, in connection With the friction roller f, of lever K, insure a quick action of the lever K, the projection g of the spring being in contact With the friction roller and not only causing the quick' action alluded to, but also preventing any casual movement of the collar J on the shaft C. The buckets are illed as they enter the Water in the Well, the valves h opening and the Water passing into the buckets.
Thus it Will be seen that by turning the shaft C, continuously in one direction, the
vbuckets P, P alternately rise and fall, the
filled bucket automatically tilted as it approaches its culminating point and the lowermost bucket lling as it enters the Water.
I am avvare that the Windlasses of Well curbs havebeen heretofore shifted by having the driving shaft made to slide so that the operator after lifting a lled bucket might arrest the rotary motion of the shaft and then apply lateral force to the end of the driving shaft so as to shift it. I am also aware that buckets have been tilted by means of a rod S or its equivalent and also that buckets have been provided With valves in their bottoms for the purpose of enabling them to fill as they enter the Water. I therefore do not claim broadly such devices when separately considered; but I am not cog-- nizant of the application of the device set forth for keeping the sleeve to its duty by the use of lever M with-the spring L upon it, to render its action more certain, but,
I-Iaving thus described my invention, What I claim as nevv and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The employment in combination with the buckets, vvindlass and Windlass shaft, of a Well, of the self acting device composed of the oscillating double armed lever K, sliding toothed collar J, and oscillating lever M With the spring L in the manner as herein shown and described.
