(Cl. 223-46) The present invention relates in general to apparatus for use in making decorative ribbon bows of the rosette or pompom type, and more particularly to apparatus for aiding the manual forming of such decorative ribbon bows by the general purchasing public. This application is a continuation-in-part of my earlier application S.N. 167,048, filed January 18, 1962, now abandoned.
Heretofore, a number of different machines have been devised for automatically and mechanically forming decorative bows from ribbon for use by commercial establishments such as retail stores and sellers of preformed decorative bows, in connection with fancy packaging of gifts and wrapping of commercial products during holiday seasons. These machines are complex and expensive, so that it has been impractical for individuals to purchase such devices for home use. Further, such devices are limited by their construction to production of ornamental ribbon bows from a single stock roll of ribbon and accordingly are not readily adaptable to production of multicolored decorative bows. Recognizing that there is a far greater demand for home production of highly ornamental decorative bows for use in gift wrapping and the like, others have devised ribbons of special construction to facilitate production of decorative bows by the general consumer public, but such ribbons are especially shaped or perforated for the production of such decorative bows and are not suitable for other use to which conventional ribbon is applicable.
An object of the present invention is the provision of an extremely simple, inexpensiveapparatus which will facilitate the production of decorative ribbon bows from conventional ribbon by persons of average skill.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of apparatus of the type described in the preceding paragraph wherein a bow-retaining pin may be removably supported in a selected position relative to a conventional ribbon roll or similar supporting base in a manner facil itating formation of decorative bows of the pompom or rosette type and retaining of the formed bow in impaled relation on the pin.

The first form of apparatus of the present invention illustrated in FIGURES 1-7 comprises a bow-retaining pin, indicated generally by the reference character 10, which is removably supported on a bow pin holder indicated at 11, which in turn is removably mounted in or on a stock ribbon roll or spool 12 to support the loopretaining pin 10 in proper position to facilitate manual formation of the rosettebow. The loop-retaining pin 10 may be conveniently formed with an enlarged base 13 which may have a cylindrical or beveled periphery in the herein described embodiment, from the center of which an upright shaft 14 of square, rectangular or circular cross section projects. The upper end of the shaft 14 is capped by a conical pointed head 15 having a pointed tip 16 and a base 17 which is of greater transverse dimension than the shaft 14 to provide a downwardly facing annular shoulder 18 The loop-retaining pin 10 is designed to be supported by the pin holder fixture 11 in alignment with the central axis of the ribbon roll 12 and in upwardly pointing position when the roll 12 is disposed on a flat horizontal surface so as to maintain the pin 10 in convenient position for impaling portions of the ribbon thereon.
The pin holder 11 is designed to removably support the pin 10 in the above-described position and to be removably supported in the central opening 19 of a standard consumer type ribbon roll 12, such rolls customarlly having a pair of axially spaced cardboard end plates 12a, 12b between which ribbon is wound on a cylindrical core, with central spindle openings 19 being provided in the end plates 12a, 12b. The pin holder 11 comprises a cylindrical post or body portion 20 which may be of solid or hollow construction, having an enlarged annular mounting flange or shoulder member 21 at the lower end of the post 20 and a friction coupling stud 22 depending below the mounting flange 21 which is here shown to be of bon bows, wherein multi-colored bows may be formed with ease from different colored sections of ribbon. Other objects, advantages and capabilities of the present invention will become apparent from the following detail description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, illustrating a preferred form of the invention. frusto-conical configuration to project into central opening 19 of the uppermost end plate 12a of the ribbon roll 12 when the roll is disposed with its end plates horizontal. The stud 22 will preferably have a diameter at its largest portion closely conforming to or very slightly larger than the diameter of the central opening 19 in the ribbon roll 12 so as to form a friction fit with the centralopening of the ribbon roll. The opposite or upper end of the post 20 is provided with a flanged seat or socket 23 to receive and removably support the disk-like base 13 of the pin 10. The 'pin supporting seat 23 is in the form of a cylindrical recess concentric with the axis of the post 20 and conforming closely to the configuration of the base 13 of the pin 10, the recess opening laterally through one side of the post 20 as indicated at 24 and being bounded by an arcuate retaining flange or lip 25 which is at least semicircular and overlaps portions of the upper surface of the base 13 adjacent the periphery of the base 13 over about one-half or more of the circumference thereof. In one preferred form of the present invention, as illustrated more clearly in FIGURE 3, the retaining flange or lip 25 extends around the periphery of the seat 23 over slightly more than so as to provide snap-action frictional retention of the pin 10 in the seat 23.
In one practical example of the present invention, the post 20 of the holder fixture 11 may have an axial length of about one inch and a diameter of .43 inch, the pin retaining seat 23 may have a maximum diameter of .38 inch and an axial height of & inch, and the retaining flange or lip 25 may have a thickness of A inch and a diameter of .25 inch defined by the circular inner edge of the lip. The mounting flange 21 in this example may have a thickness of /3 inch and an outer diameter of one inch, and the stud 22 may have a maximum diameter of .64 inch and a minimum diameter of .40 inch.
It will be appreciated that the loop retaining pin 10 and the pin holder fixture 11 may be formed of any suitable material, such as plastic, wood, aluminum, steel, cardboard or the like, although they can most inexpensively be formed of molded plastic.
Further, substantial variation may be made in the configuration of the stud 22 designed to removably support the bow-pin holder 11 on or in the ribbon roll 12, and instead of providing a stud of suitable configuration to project into and form a friction fit with the circular hole 19 in the ribbon roll 12, other securing means such as a circumferentially arranged set of sharpened points or bendable pointed tabs may extend in depending relation from the mounting flange 21 to be forced through the material of the upper end plate 12a of the ribbon roll 12, and if desired, be bent over beneath the upper end plate 12a of the roll 12 to more permanently secure the pin holder fixture 11 in position on the ribbon roll 12.
In forming a rosette ribbon bow or pompom with the above-described apparatus, the pin holder 11 is first seated on the ribbon roll 12, by projecting the stud 22 into the center spindle hole 19 of the ribbon roll in the above-v described example, and a loop-retaining pin 10 is slipped into the retaining seat 23 in the top of the holder 11. A piece of ribbon, herein indicated by the reference character 26, approximately five feet long, is then cut from V the stock of ribbon on the roll 12, and with the finished side up, the ribbon is crossed to form the first loop or petal indicated by the reference character 27 having a length about one-half the length of the desired size of the bow, and the ribbon is placed onto the retaining pin 10 in the zone of intersection or crossing so that the conical head 15 passes entirely through the two layers of ribbon and the loop or pedal will then be retained by the shoulder 18 at the base of the pointed head 15. The base ribbon is then taken in the left hand, manipulated to form a second loop or petal as illustrated in FIGURE 5 having a length corresponding to the length of the first loop and is impaled on the pin it at the point where the top layer of ribbon crosses over the crossing point of the ribbon layers forming the first loop. Successive loops are formed in a similar manner and locked in position by im paling the ribbon on the ribbon retaining pin as illustrated in FIGURES 6 and 7 until the complete rosette bow is formed. For ease in forming the bow, the riobon roll 12 to which the holder 11 is attached may be circled to the right or in a counterclockwise direction with the right hand while the process of forming the successive loops or petals is continued, to facilitate manual formation of the loops. Also, the circular upper side of the ribbon roll 12 forms a convenient guide for judging the length of the successive loops or petals to be formed so that uniform petals can be produced providing a symmetrical and attractive rosette bow. Approximately 16 to 14 loops or petals may be formed in this manner with the length of ribbon mentioned. The head of the bow retaining pin 10 may then be grasped with the thumb and index finger and the pin 10 with the rosette locked thereon may be readily removed from the seat 23 of the holder 11 and pinned or otherwise secured to the gift pack- Multi-colored bows can also be conveniently formed with this apparatus by using two or more pieces of ribbon of different colors. The several pieces of ribbon of different colors are placed together in overlapping relation with the finished side of the ribbons up, and the bow is formed in the same manner as if one piece of ribbon were being used. After the formed bow and loop-retainin g pin are removed from the holder 11, the loops or petals of 'to produce an attractive multi-colored rosette bow.
Another advantageous feature of this device is that additional bow styles and patterns may be made other than the conventional rosette and pompom styles. For example, a beautiful elongated bow may be made by form'- ing a double loop of approximately one and a half inches indiameter and inserting the pin through the center of the loop, from inside the loop, leaving the. loop temporarily pushed to the side of the bow making device. Then, without crossing the ribbons, make additional pairs of matching loops, the first to extend about one and one-half inches on either side of the pin. Each additional pairof loops on either side of the pin is to be lengthened by about one-half inch until as many pairs or loops as desired have been added. Each pair of loops should fit exactly on top of the loops below, and the result will be a beautiful elongated bow.
By this arrangement, apparatus is provided which will greatly simplify the manual production by unskilled persons of rosette ribbon bows, which apparatus is so small and simple in design that it can be produced for a few cents and made available to anyone. Highly attractive rosette bows formed of pieces of ribbon of different colors as desired by the user can be readily assembled with this device and no great skill is required in the production of a highly attractive rosette bow. The retention of the loop retaining pin in a removable holder fixture with the pointed head facing up facilitates the successive manipulation of the ribbon to form the loops or petals and the impaling of the ribbon on the retaining pin, and the disposition of the retaining pin in this relation in alignment with the central axis of the stock ribbon roll provides an obvious circular guide to facilitate production of a rosette bow of attractive appearance having uniform sized loops or petals.
The second embodiment of the present invention illustrated in FIGURES 8ll comprises a loop retaining pin which is of similar configuration to the pin 10 of the first described embodiment, having an enlarged base 31 which is of substantially square configuration from which an upright shaft 32 projects, terminating in a conical pointed head 33 having a base which is of greater transverse diameterthan the shaft 32 to provide an upwardly facing annular shoulder for retaining ribbon loops impaled on the pin below the head 33. The enlarged base 31 has a central nose or detent 34 projecting downwardly from the lower surface thereof.
The pin holder fixture 35 of this embodiment is also designed to removably support loop retaining pin 30 in anupwardly pointing position with the shaft 32 aligned with the central axis of the ribbon roll, here indicated by reference character 12', the pin 30 being disposed in an upwardly pointing position when the ribbon roll 12 is disposed on a fiat horizontal surface with its cardboard end plates 12a and 12b lying in horizontal planes. The pin holder fixture 35 is preferably of unitary plastic molded type and comprises a post or body portion 36 having a cross shaped transverse sectional configuration over the major portion of the axial length thereof providing radial ribs 37 located in quadrature relation to each other. At the lower end of the post or body portion 36 is an enlarged annular mounting flange or shoulder member 38, below which there is a frictional coupling extension in the form of four radially projecting quadrature related wedge formations 39 aligned generally with the planes of the ribs 37 and having downwardly and inwardly inclined sharpened edges 40 whereby each aligned and oppositely extending pair ofwedge formations produces a composite profile of isosceles trapezoidal configuration. At the upper or radially outermost. ends of the sharpened edges 4%) of the wedge formations 39 where these formations join the shoulder member 38, notches 41 are provided. The spacing and inclination of the sharpened edges 40 are selected relative to the diameter of the central opening 19 of the end plates of the ribbon roll 12' so that the opposite sets of sharpened edges 40 progress from a spacing smaller than the normal diameter of the central opening 19' to a spacing slightly larger than this diameter.
The upper end portion of the post 36 is provided with a retaining seat or socket 42 to receive and removably support the base 31 of the loop retaining pin 30 and includes an axially shallow, laterally opening recess 43 having a lateral profile corresponding substantially to the lateral profile of the base 31 of the pin 30. The remote or inner walls of the recess 43 are shaped to correspond to two adjoining sides of the base 31 of the pin 30 and disposed to locate the shaft 32 of the pin 30 in alignment with the medial axis of the post 36 when the adjacent sides of the base 31 abut the inner walls of the recess 43. The lower surface or bottom of the recess 43 is formed by a thin transverse or horizontal web 44 which has a limited amount of resilient deformability provided by forming a cutout 45 in the post 36 immediately below the web 44, the web 44 having upwardly opening shallow socket 46 aligned with the central axis of the post 36 to frictionally receive the detent or nose 34 at the bottom of the base 31 of the pin 30 and removably restrain the pin against lateral displacement from the recess 43.
In the use of this embodiment, the fixture 35 is first secured to the ribbon roll 12' by forcing the frictional coupling extension into the central spindle opening 19' of the upper cardboard end plate 12a of ribbon roll 12' until the bounding edges of the end plate 12a surrounding opening 19' snap into the notches 41. This action and the frictional retention of the post in removable relation to theroll 12' is facilitated by the wedge formations 39 of the coupling extension, the inclined sharpened edges 40 thereof readily cutting through the adjacent cardboard material of the end plate 12a until the cardboard edges snap into the notches 41. One of the loop retaining pins 30 is then seated in the recess 43 adjacent the upper end of the post 36 and the ribbon loops are produced in the same manner as with the previously described embodiment to form the desired decorative bow.
While but two preferred examples of the present invention have been described, it is apparent that various modifications may be made therein within the spirit and scope of the invention, and it is desired, therefore, that only such limitations be placed on the invention as are imposed by the prior art and set forth in the appended claims.

1. Apparatus for use with a standard consumer ribbon roll of the type having ribbon wound on a cylindrical core supported between a pair of axially spaced parallel annular end plates of relatively deformable cardboard or the like which have aligned center spindle openings to make bows of the rosette type from a strip of the ribbon comprising a rigid integral loop retaining pin onto which successive loops of the ribbon are to be impaled and held at the center of the bow having an elongated shank terminating at one end in an enlarged sharpened head and at the other end in an enlarged base flange, an integral molded holder fixture for releasably holding said pin in upwardly pointing relation in alignment with the center axis of said ribbon roll when the ribbon roll is positioned with its end plates in horizontal planes including an elongated post adapted to be disposed in upright relation on the uppermost end plate of the ribbon roll, said post having a socket formation at the upper end thereof for re-' ceiving and releasably supporting said pin base flange formed by a recess conforming substantially to the configuration of said base flange opening laterally through said post to provide an access opening for said pin base flange and retaining flanges disposed to lap over peripheral portions of said pin base flange when the latter is seated in said recess and restrain the pin against axial and radial movement, said post having a radially outwardly projecting shoulder portion at the lower end thereof to seat against the uppermost end plate of said ribbon roll adjacent said center opening, and frictional coupling means projecting below the lower end of said post to be removably inserted into the spindle opening of the uppermost end plate of said ribbon and having downwardly convergent surface portions sized relative to said spindle opening to abut and slightly deform diametrically opposite portions of said uppermost end plate bounding said spindle opening and frictionally couple the fixture to said ribbon roll in alignment with the center axis of the ribbon roll. 7.
2. Apparatus for use with a standard consumer ribbon roll of the type having ribbon wound on a cylindrical core supported between a pair of axially spaced parallel end plates of relatively deformable cardboard or the like which have aligned center spindle openings to make ribbon bows of the type having a plurality of loops lying radially elongated and closely adjacent each other in a wheel-shaped bank, comprising a loop retaining pin in the form of a rigid integral element onto which successive loops of the ribbon are to be impaled and held at the center of the bow having an elongated shank terminating at one end in an enlarged sharpened head and at the other end in an enlarged base flange, an integral molded pin holder fixture for releasably holding said pin in upwardly pointing relation in alignment with the center axis of said ribbon roll when the ribbon roll is positioned with its end plates in horizontal planes including an elongated post adapted to be disposed in upright relation on the uppermost end plate of the ribbon roll in align, ment with the center axis of the roll, said post including a socket formation at the upper end thereof having a recess conforming substantially to the configuration of said pin base flange concentric with the axis of the post for receiving and releasably supporting the pin base flange and an access passage opening laterally of the post accommodating insertion and withdrawal of the pin base flange radially of the post axis, said post including arcuate retaining flanges to lap over peripheral portions of said pin base flange and locate the base flange in said recess in axial alignment with said post and restrain the pin base flange against axial and radial displacement, said post having a radially outwardly projecting shoulder portion at the lower end thereof to seat against the uppermost end plate of said ribbon roll adjacent said center opening, and frictional coupling means projecting below the lower end of said post to be removably inserted into the spindle opening of the uppermost end plate of said ribbon roll and having downwardly convergent surface portions sized relative to said spindle opening to abut and slightly deform diametrically opposite portions of said uppermost end plate bounding'said spindle opening and frictionally couple the fixture to said ribbon roll in alignment with the center axis of the ribbon roll.
3. In apparatus for use in making ribbon bows, the combination recited in claim 1 wherein said frictional coupling means comprises a coupling stud depending below said shoulder portion having a frusto-conical configuration which tapers downwardly and inwardly toward the projecting axis of said post.
4. In apparatus for use in making ribbon bows, the combination recited in claim 1 wherein said frictional coupling means comprises a plurality of radially projecting rib members having a substantially cross-shaped configuration in transverse section terminating in sharpened outer edges which are inclined downwardly from said shoulder portion and inwardly toward the extended axis of said post to cut into the material of the adjacent end plate of said ribbon roll bounding the adjacent central spindle opening thereof.

In apparatus for use in making ribbon bows, the combination recited in claim 1 wherein said frictional coupling means comprises a plurality of radially projecting wedge formations defining a substantially crossshaped figure in transverse section terminating in sharpened outer edges which are inclined downwardly from said shoulder portion and inwardly toward the extended axis of said post to cut into the material of the adjacent end plate of'said ribbon roll bounding the adjacent central spindle opening thereof, and said wedge formations having notches 1 at the uppermost end portions of the outer edges into which the end plate is adapted to snap when said coupling means are fully projected through said spindle opening. 7

Apparatus for use with .a standard consumer ribbon roll of the type having ribbon wound on a cylindrical core supported between a pair of axially spaced parallel annular end plates of relatively deformable cardboard or the like which have aligned center spindle openings to make bows of the rosette type from a strip of the ribbon, comprising a rigid integral loop retaining pin onto which successive loops of the ribbon are to be impaled and held at the center of the bow having an elongated shank terminating at one end in an enlarged sharpened head and at the other end in an enlarged base flange, an integral rnolded holder fixture for releasably holding said pin in upwardly pointing relation in alignment with the center axis of said ribbon roll when the ribbon roll is positioned with its end plates in horizontal planes including an elongated post adapted to be disposed in upright relation on the uppermost end plate of the ribbon roll, said post having a socket formation at the upper end thereof for receiving and releasably supporting said pin base flange formed by a recess conforming substantially to the configuration of said base flange opening laterally through said post to provide an access opening for said pin base flange and retaining flanges disposed to lap over peripheral portions of said pin base flange when the latter is seated in said recess and restrain the pin against axial and radial movement, said post further including a'resiliently deformable transverse web portion underlying and forming the bottom of said recess, said post having a cavity immediately beneath said web portion and substantially coextensive therewith to accomrnodate downwardly flexing of said web portion, and cooperative detent means on adjacent faces of said base flange and web portion for frictionally restraining said pin in axial alignment with said post, said post having a radially outwardly projecting shoulder portion at the lower end thereof to seat against the uppermost end plate of said ribbon roll adjacent said center opening, and frictional coupling means projecting below the lower end of said post to be removably inserted into the spindle having downwardly convergent surface portions sized relative to said spindle opening to abut and slightly deform diametrically opposite portions of said uppermost end plate bounding said spindle opening and frictionally couple the fixture to said ribbon roll in alignment with the center axis of the ribbon roll.
7. In apparatus for use in making ribbon bows, the combination recited in claim 1 wherein said loop retaining pin has a central downwardly projecting detent extending from the lower surface of said base flange, and said post includes a resiliently deformable web underlying and forming the bottom surface of said recess, said web having an upwardly opening shallow detent socket in the upper'surface thereof substantially aligned with the central axis'of said post, said web adapted to be resiliently deformed downwardly upon contact with said upwardly projecting detent during insertion of said base flange into said recess and said detent socket frictionally receiving said detent when said base flange is fully inserted into said recess for frictional restraint of said pin in axial alignment with said post.
8. In apparatus for use in making ribbon bows, the combination recited in claim 1 wherein said frictional coupling means comprises a plurality of radially projecting wedge formations defining a substantially cross-shaped figure in transverse section terminating in sharpened outer edges which are inclined downwardly from said shoulder portion and inwardly toward the extended axis of said post to out into the material of the adjacent end plate of said ribbon roll bounding the adjacent central spindle opening thereof, and said wedge formations having notches at the'uppermost end portions of the outer edges into which the end plate is adapted to snap when said coupling means are fully projected through said spindle References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Barefoot July 17, 1962 Rector Oct. 30, 1962
Claims (1)
1. APPARATUS FOR USE WITH A STANDARD CONSUMER RIBBON ROLL OF THE TYPE HAVING RIBBON WOUND ON A CYLINDRICAL CORE SUPPORTED BETWEEN A PAIR OF AXIALLY SPACED PARALLEL ANNULAR END PLATES OF RELATIVELY DEFORMABLE CARDBOARD OR THE LIKE WHICH HAVE ALIGNED CENTER SPINDLE OPENINGS TO MAKE BOWS OF THE ROSETTE TYPE FROM A STRIP OF THE RIBBON COMPRISING A RIGID INTEGRAL LOOP RETAINING PIN ONTO WHICH SUCCESSIVE LOOPS OF THE RIBBON ARE TO BE IMPALED AND HELD AT THE CENTER OF THE BOW HAVING AN ELONGATED SHANK TERMINATING AT ONE END IN AN ENLARGED SHARPENED HEAD AND AT THE OTHER END IN AN ENLARGED BASE FLANGE, AN INTEGRAL MOLDED HOLDER FIXTURE FOR RELEASABLY HOLDING SAID PIN IN UPWARDLY POINTING RELATION IN ALIGNMENT WITH THE CENTER AXIS OF SAID RIBBON ROLL WHEN THE RIBBON ROLL IS POSITIONED WITH ITS END PLATES IN HORIZONTAL PLANES INCLUDING AN ELONGATED POST ADAPTED TO BE DISPOSED IN UPRIGHT RELATION ON THE UPPERMOST END PLATE OF THE RIBBON ROLL, SAID POST HAVING A SOCKET FORMATION AT THE UPPER END THEREOF FOR RECEIVING AND RELEASABLY SUPPORTING SAID PIN BASE FLANGE FORMED BY A RECESS CONFORMING SUBSTANTIALLY TO THE CONFIGURATION OF SAID BASE FLANGE OPENING LATERALLY THROUGH SAID POST TO PROVIDE AN ACCESS OPENING FOR SAID PIN BASE FLANGE AND RETAINING FLANGES DISPOSED TO LAP OVER PERIPHERAL PORTIONS OF SAID PIN BASE FLANGE WHEN THE LATTER IS SEATED IN SAID RECESS AND RESTRAIN THE PIN AGAINST AXIAL AND RADIAL MOVEMENT, SAID POST HAVING A RADIALLY OUTWARDLY PROJECTING SHOULDER PORTION AT THE LOWER END THEREOF TO SEAT AGAINST THE UPPERMOST END PLATE OF SAID RIBBON ROLL ADJACENT SAID CENTER OPENING, AND FRICTIONAL COUPLING MEANS PROJECTING BELOW THE LOWER END OF SAID POST TO BE REMOVABLY INSERTED INTO THE SPINDLE OPENING OF THE UPPERMOST END PLATE OF SAID RIBBON AND HAVING DOWNWARDLY CONVERGENT SURFACE PORTIONS SIZED RELATIVE TO SAID SPINDLE OPENING TO ABUT AND SLIGHTLY DEFORM DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSITE PORTIONS OF SAID UPPERMOST END PLATE BOUNDING SAID SPINDLE OPENING AND FRICTIONALLY COUPLE THE FIXTURE TO SAID RIBBON ROLL IN ALIGNMENT WITH THE CENTER AXIS OF THE RIBBON ROLL.
