Noster, Brooklyn, N.Y., assignor to Security Hardware Manufacturing Co., Inc., Brooklyn, N.Y., a corporation of New York Filed Apr. 16, 1962, Ser. No. 187,818 (Claims. (Cl. 7090) This invention relates to window locks, and in particular, window locks for double hung windows and the like.
It is an object of this invention to provide a window lock which will have positive locking action, and in which the elements for fastening the lock to the window sash are covered so that the lock may not be removed from either inside or outside the window when it is in locked posi- It is a further object of this invention to provide window locks which are simple to install, and it is afurther object of this invention to provide window locks which are key operated.
Further objects and advantages will appear from the specification hereinbelow. These objects and advantages are achieved with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The device comprises a base portion 11, a slide housing 12 and a strike 13. The base portion 11 is generally channel-shaped in cross section, having a central raised portion 14, floor portions 15, sides 16 and shoulders 17. The raised portion 14 has openings 18 and 19 through which wood screws 20 and 21, or other types of fasteners, may be used to secure the base portion 11 to a sash or window frame 22.
Raised portion 14 also has two strikes 23 and 24 which cooperate with slide housing latch bolt 25. Slide housing 12 is generally tubular in form. At one end there is a latch bolt 26, and at the other end there is a chamber 27 to receive a tumbler lock 28 which is operated by a removable key 29. Tumbler lock 28 is any type of tumbler lock known to the art which is cylindrical, key operated and has a pin, such as pin 30, which may be moved by operation of the lock 28 back and forth in the direction of double-headed arrow A as shown in FIG. 5 of the drawings.
At a medial portion of the slide latch housing 12, there is an undercut opening 31 through which nose 32 of latch bolt may emerge to engage either strike 23 or strike 24. Latch bolt 25 is fitted into medial portion of the slide latch housing 12 through undercut opening 31. Latch bolt 25 has a step portion 37 to accommodate spring 33 which is seated against spring seat 36 in shoulder 34 inside slide latch housing 12, and also against seat 35 of latch bolt 25.
Thus, the expansion action of spring 33 acts to urge latch bolt 25 outwardly from slide latch housing 12. Latch bolt 25 is retained in place, however, by means of pin which fits within the area of operating pin cut 38 which is made in the latch bolt 25.
Reference to FIG. 5 of the drawings will show double headed arrow A which shows the area of movement of operating pin 30. Operating pin 30 reciprocates in a circularly defined area as shown by the double headed arrow A in FIG. 5 as it is set somewhat oft center from the 3,136,141 Patented as. 9, 1964 rotating tumbler of tumbler lock 28. Thus, when tumbler 28 is rotated by means of key 29, operating pin 30 moves from lower arrow head of double headed arrow A to upper arrow head of double headed arrow A to the position as shown in FIG. 5 of the drawings. This causes latch bolt 25 to be moved entirely within slide latch housing 12 against action of spring 33, and places the device in open or sliding position.
In other words, it permits slide latch housing 12 to be slide fitted to base portion 11. When key 29 is released, action of spring 33 will force latch 25 down pushing operating pin 30 down and placing latch 25 in latching position as shown in FIG. 4 of the drawings.
In order to assist the outward sliding movement, I provide two springs 41 which are seated in spring seat pins 39 attached to the base portion 11, and are also seated within circular spring seats 46. These springs urge slide latch housing 12 outwardly in the direction of arrow B associated with FIG. 3 of the drawings.
I also provide shoulders 42 on either side of slide latch housing 12 so that it can be slide fitted to base portion 11. I provide strike plate 13 for upper window sash 48 as shown in FIG. 1 of the drawings. Strike plate 13 has screw holes 43 and 44, and is attached to sash 48 by means of screws 45 and 46. Strike 13 is also provided with a strike hole 47 which is adapted to receive latch bolt 26. It will be noted from FIG. 1 of the drawings that when slide latch housing 12 is pushed inwardly so that when latch bolt 25 engages strike 23, latch bolt 26 will fit within strike hole 47, and shoulders 17 and 42 as well as side 16 will cover substantially all of screw 46 thereby preventing screw 46 from being removed when the device is in locked position. Also when in locked position, screw 21 will be completely covered to prevent removal.
In order to unlock the device, key 29 is inserted and turned to lift latch bolt 25. Springs 41 will force slide latch housing outwardly and remove latch bolt 26 from strike hole 47. In normally open position, latch bolt 25 will engage strike 24, and in normally locked position, latch bolt 25 will engage strike 23.
In conjunction with the device as already described, I may provide one or more additional separate strikes such as strike 13a, for upper window sash 48 as shown in FIG. 1 of the drawings. These additional strikes 13a are similar to strike plate 13, and have screw holes 43a and 44a through which they may be attached to sash 48 by means of screws 45a and 46a. Strike 13a is also provided with a strike hole 47a which is adapted to receive latch bolt 26. In addition to installation on one side or end of the window sash as shown in FIG. 1 of the drawings, a double installation can be made in which two devices 10 may be installed on the upper right and left hand corners of a sash or window frame 22 so that the window can be locked on both sides, and as many additional strike plates may be installed in conjunction therewith, as desired, so that the window sash can be locked at different open positions.
While I have described my invention in its preferred forms, there are other forms which it may take without leaving the spirit and scope of the invention, and I, therefore, desire to be protected for all forms coming within the claims appended hereinbelow.
Wherefore I claim:
1. in a Window lock for a double hung window comprising a first sash and a second sash: a base portion comprising a floor plate with means to fasten the said floor plate to the said first sash, said floor plate including an inner end positioned to face the said second sash, and an slide housing comprising a first sprint seating means within at least one of said lateral extensions, 21 first latch bolt extending from theinner end of said slide housing, a second latch bolt placed transversely within said slide housing and adapted to reciprocate throughian opening in said slide housing facing the said strikes of said base portion, a second spring means seated against a portion of the said slide housing and against a portion of the said second latch bolt to normally urge the said second latch bolt out of said opening in the said slide housing to engage the inner strike to place the lock in locking position and to engage the outer strike to place the lock in unlocked position, operating means comprising a portion adapted to engage the said second bolt to move it against the force of the said second spring means; and at least one spring means adapted to be seated in the said spring seating means of the said base and the said first spring seating means of the said slidehousing to bias the said slide housing from an inward locking position to an outward unlocked position.
2. The device as described in claim 1, in which the said operating means comprises a rotating tumbler lock and a removable key.
3. The device as defined in claim 2, in which the said means for fastening the said base portion to the said first sash comprises at least one removable fastenerinserted through an opening in the said base portion, said fastener being located beneath a portion of the said slide housing when it is in inward locking position,

The device as defined in claim 3, which includes, in combination, a separate strike plate mounted on the said second sash including a first opening through which the said first latch bolt may be placed, and at least one other opening through which fastening means may be placed to secure the said strike plate to the said second sash, said other opening being positioned in facing relationshi to the inner ends of the base portion and slide housing when the said device is in looking position.
5. The device as described in claim 1, which includes in combination a separate strike plate mounted on said second sash and including an opening through which the said first latch bolt may be placed.

1. IN A WINDOW LOCK FOR A DOUBLE HUNG WINDOW COMPRISING A FIRST SASH AND A SECOND SASH: A BASE PORTION COMPRISING A FLOOR PLATE WITH MEANS TO FASTEN THE SAID FLOOR PLATE TO THE SAID FIRST SASH, SAID FLOOR PLATE INCLUDING AN INNER END POSITIONED TO FACE THE SAID SECOND SASH, AND AN OUTER END POSITIONED TO FACE AWAY FROM SAID SECOND SASH, AND ALSO COMPRISING A PAIR OF STRIKES INCLUDING AN INNER STRIKE AND AN OUTER STRIKE, AND MEANS COMPRISING SIDES AND SHOULDERS ADAPTED TO RECEIVE A SLIDE HOUSING WITH AT LEAST ONE SPRING SEATING MEANS LOCATED AT THE INNER END OF THE SAID BASE PORTION; IN COMBINATION WITH A SLIDE HOUSING HAVING INNER AND OUTER ENDS CORRESPONDING TO THE SAID INNER AND OUTER ENDS OF THE SAID BASE PORTION, AND HAVING LONGITUDINAL LATERAL EXTENSIONS ADAPTED TO BE SLIDE FITTED TO SAID SIDES AND SHOULDERS OF THE SAID BASE, SAID SLIDE HOUSING COMPRISING A FIRST SPRING SEATING MEANS WITHIN AT LEAST ONE OF SAID LATERAL EXTENSIONS, A FIRST LATCH BOLT EXTENDING FROM THE INNER END OF SAID SLIDE HOUSING, A SECOND LATCH BOLT PLACED TRANSVERSELY WITHIN SAID SLIDE HOUSING AND ADAPTED TO RECIPROCATE THROUGH AN OPENING IN SAID SLIDE HOUSING FACING THE SAID STRIKES OF SAID BASE PORTION, A SECOND SPRING MEANS SEATED AGAINST A PORTION OF THE SAID SLIDE HOUSING AND AGAINST A PORTION OF THE SAID SECOND LATCH BOLT TO NORMALLY URGE THE SAID SECOND LATCH BOLT OUT OF SAID OPENING IN THE SAID SLIDE HOUSING TO ENGAGE THE INNER STRIKE TO PLACE THE LOCK IN LOCKING POSITION AND TO ENGAGE THE OUTER STRIKE TO PLACE THE LOCK IN UNLOCKED POSITION, OPERATING MEANS COMPRISING A PORTION ADAPTED TO ENGAGE THE SAID SECOND BOLT TO MOVE IT AGAINST THE FORCE OF THE SAID SECOND SPRING MEANS; AND AT LEAST ONE SPRING MEANS ADAPTED TO BE SEATED IN THE SAID SPRING SEATING MEANS OF THE SAID BASE AND THE SAID FIRST SPRING SEATING MEANS OF THE SAID SLIDE HOUSING TO BIAS THE SAID SLIDE HOUSING FROM AN INWARD LOCKING POSITION TO AN OUTWARD UNLOCKED POSITION.
