CARRIAGE-BODY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,591, dated March 10, 1885.

the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the construction of childrens carriages; and it consists in a childs carriage having a body formed mainly of split reeds of rattan fastened by glue or other adhesive substance on a flexible foundation, said split reeds being first laid side by side on said foundation and their flat surfaces caused to adhere thereto, and then pieces of the material so formed nailed or otherwise fastened on a frame-work to form the carriage-body.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a body of a childs carriage embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken in the direction of lines 1 1 in Figl 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken in the direction of lines 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 shows asheet of flexible material, as paper, having split reeds fastened thereon, as by glue. a part of the reeds being broken away, the sheet having been cut in shape for a side of a carriagebody. I use split reeds-son1e of which are lettered a in the drawingsthey being formed of the split pith of rattan. I fasten these split reeds on a flexible foundation by means of some adhesive substance, preferably glue, the flat surfaces of the split reeds being next the foundation. I prereeds fastened on a flexible foundationpicces of the proper shape for the body of the carriage, as the sides A A and ends B B. There is a bow, 0, around the upper edge of the carriagebody, and a bottom board, D, to which these pieces are nailed or similarly secured. There may be as many standards b as are required, to which said pieces are also fastened. Over the joints may be nailed strips or reeds c and at the bottom edge one or more strips or reeds, d, for further finish. The outside of the carriage-bodythat is, the split reeds a-may be painted, whereby an even color and finished appearance is obtained.
I claim as my invention- 1. A childs carriage the body of which is constructed of pieces of a material formed of split reeds of rattan secured side by side on a flexible foundation by means of glue or other adhesive substance, said pieces being fastened on a suitable frame, substantially as specified.
2. A childs carriage the sides A A and ends B B of which are formed of a material consisting of split reeds of rattan having their fiat sides fastened by glue or other adhesive substance on paper or other flexible foundation, substantially as specified.
