HEYWOOD, GEORGE HEYWOOD, MORRILL, OF SAME PLACE.
ALVIN M. GREENWOOD, AND AMOS CARRIAGE-BODY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 296,943, dated April 15, 1884.
Application filed June 18, 1883. (No model.)
.To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. ELLIs, of Gardner, WVorcester county, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oarriage;Bodies; and I do hereby declare the following to beafull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in carriage-bodies; and the invention consists in a carriage-body of skeleton frame with panels of woven cane in the front, back, sides, and bottom, in the manner and 1 for the purpose hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my carriage-body; Fig. 2, a cross-section taking theline mm, Fig.
2 0 1; Fig. 3, a cross-section taking the line 3/ y,
Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a plan of woven fabric.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
The purpose of this invention is to produce a carriage-body for childrens carriages that shall be at once light, graceful, ventilated, and of reasonable cost. To that end I construct my body with posts a, b, and c and rails d,suitably framed or joined together to make the go skeleton of the body, the size and proportion of this skeleton depending, of course, upon the size and proportion of the parts used in its construction. The posts and rails referred to may be madeof any suitable material, prefer- 5 ably, however, on the score of lightness and cheapness, of wood. Into the posts and rails are formed grooves e of suitable depth. Now, to complete the sides, back, front, and bottom of the body, panels A, of woven cane or. of
other suitable material and of proper size, are laid over the grooves e in the posts and rails. These grooves having been filled with glue, strips of wood f, of proper length and width, are next placed on the woven material immediately over the grooves 6. These strips being then forced downward, they carry with them into the grooves the woven fabric, jamming it tightly therein where it and thestrips f remain glued fast, the woven fabric filling the sides, back, front, andbottom of the body and forming panels. The panels in this way formed may be of any shape or design that fancy may suggest, and the strips of wood f may be continuous or of hoop form or in several sec tions jointed at the angles of the panels.
Instead of forming the bottom of the body of woven cane, it may, if desired, be made of .wood, and also the interior of the back portion of the body, as at 9, Fig. 2, for the purpose of attaching upholstery by way of additional finish.
From the foregoing description of the con struction of my carriage-body it will be seen that the body is light, graceful, and since the interstices of the woven fabric will freely admit the air it is well ventilated.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a carriage-body, the side consisting of 70 the wooden frame composed of the upright posts a, b, and c and the cross-pieces d, connecting said uprights, combined with panels of woven cane or similar material united'with said frame in substantially the manner and for the purpose described.
2. A carriage-body having its sides composed of the upright posts a, b, and 0, crosspieces d, connecting said uprights and constituting frames, panels of woven cane or similar material united to said frame, the usual interior upholstering, and board foundations interposed between said upholstering and panels, and to which the upholstering is secured, substantially as set forth.
GEO. A. ELLIS.
