WATCH-CASE HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,449,61atcd Marel; 3, lSS.
Application iiled August 29, 1884.
To fallu/hom t may concern:
Beit known that I, FREDERICK Rari, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinge-:Joints for fateli- Cases, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of watchcase containing my improved hinge. Fig. 2 is a like view ofthe parts of the hinge separated from each other. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one of the case-center lugs, with its pivotal pin in the position occupied when the cover is connected with said case-center, and Figs. 4 and 5 are sections upon a line passing through the axes of the pivotal pins, and show, respectively, the positions of the latter when engaged with and x disengaged from the case-cover portion of said hinge.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the gures.
My invention relates to a watch-case hinge which is contained entirely within the case, and has for its object the ready connection and separation of the cover and ease-center portions of the same; to which end said invention consists, principally, in a hinge for watchcases in which are employed two pivotal pins that are each caused to engage with the adjacent lug by an endwise movement, and when thus engaged are locked in place by a screw or other equivalent means, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specilied.
It consists, further, in a hinge for watchcases in' which each outside lug is provided with an axial opening that contains a pivotal pin which by an endwise movement may be caused to project beyond. the end of said lug and to enter into and engage with an axial opening in the adjacent end ofthe center lug, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown. Y
It consists, finally, in a hinge for watchcases in which each outside lug contains a pivotal pin that is adjustable endwise for the purpose of engagement with the center lug, and is locked in position by means of a setscrew which passes inward through said outside lug, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
(Model.)
In the annexed drawings, A represents a watch-ease center, within the interior of which are secured two hinge-lugs, B and B, that are relatively arranged to permit ol' the insertion between their inner ends of a third lug, C, that is attached to a cover, D. Said lug C is secured at one end to the inner side` or' said cover, inside ofthe bearing-edge d ofthe same, and extends in a curve downward and outward, so as to bring its opposite outer end into position between said lugs B. An opening, a, formed within said case-center, part-ly or wholly within the bearing-face c', that is provided for said bearing-edge d, permits ol" the inward passage of said lug C, the arrangement being such that said hinge-'lugs are contained wholly within the ease, and are not seen when said case is closed.
Vithin each lug B is provided au opening, b, which coincides axially with a similar opening,.b, inthe opposite lug B, and contains a pivotal pin, E, that may be entirely withdrawn within said lug, or may be caused to project beyond the inner end of the same. The center lug, C, is provided within each face with a recess or opening, c, that coincides with the opening Z) of the contiguous lug B, and is adapted to receive the end ot' the pin E, contained within the latter, when said pin is moved inward and caused to project beyond the same.
To connect the cover D with the center A, the lug C is placed in position between the lugs B, and the pivotal pins E moved inward until in engagement with the openings or recesses c, after which each ol said pins is secured in place by means of a set-screw, F, that passes inward through its lug B and impinges upon said pin.
Vhile the arrangement of lugs as shown is preferably employed, the outside lugs may, if desired, be secured to the cover and the center lug secured to the case-center.
I do not herein claim, broadly, pivotal pins when arranged to move longitudinally to cngage with the adjacent lug or lugs, the same being covered by another application for patent, Serial No. 141,65.
Having thus i'ully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim isl. A hinge for watch-cases in which are employed two pivotal pins that are each caused IOO to engage with the adjacent lug by an endwise movement, and when thus engaged are locked in place by a screw or other equivalent means, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
2. A hinge for Watch-cases in which each outside lug is provided with an axial opening that contains a pivotal pin which by an end Wise movement may be caused to project beyond the end ol" said lug,` and to enter into and engage with an axial opening in the adjacent end of the center lug, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
3. A hinge for Watch-cases in which each outside lug contains a pivotal piu that is adi5 justable endwise for the purpose oi" engagement with the center lug, and is locked in position by means of a set-screw which passes inward through said outside lug, substantially as and for the purpose set l'orth.
In testimony that claim the foregoing I have llcreuuto set my hand this 18th day of August, 1881-.
FREDERICK lAPl.
