No. 191,698 Claims priority, application France Apr. 28, 1961 2 Claims. (Cl. 57-18) This invention relates to a method and apparatus for manufacturing novelty yarns of the type having spaced knops disposed on a core yarn. 'Copending application Serial No. 859,511, now Patent No. 3,074,223, describes an apparatus of this type wherein a core yarn is advanced intermittently and a cover yarn is wound around the core yarn at a substantially uniform rate.
In this apparatus the cover yarn forms a knop as it is wound around the core yarn during the times when the core yarn is stationary. These knops are spaced by a distance determined by the advance of the core yarn between the periods of dwell.
In accordance with the disclosure of said copending application, the intermittent movement of the core yarn is obtained by a Geneva type drive which is capable of causing rapid movement of the core yarn between periods of dwell.
In accordance with the present invention the intermittent drive of the core yarn is obtained by means of gear trains which are variously connected in driving relationship to the core yarn by means of an electromagnetic clutch which is arranged to be actuated in a variable timed relationship so as to provide an irregular spacing between successive knops.
The arrangement is such that the core yarn may be fed at two different rates which are respectively slow and fast by suitable actuation of the clutch.
Various other features and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is more fully disclosed.
The invention will be better understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which a specific embodiment has been set forth for purposes of illustration.
In the drawings:
PEG. 1 is a front elevation of an apparatus embodying the invention;
FIG. 2 is a side elevation of the apparatus of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a detail of the spindle shown in FIG. 1; and
FIG. 4 is a detail of the clutch control circuit.
In the drawings a hollow spindle 1 is continuously rotated by a belt 2. Arranged on this spindle is a spool 3, carrying a package 4 of lapping or cover yarn. A tube 5 is centered in the axial passage of the spindle 1 by two bearings 6. At the upper end, this tube 5 carries a slightly conical or cylindrical needle 7 which passes through a hole 8 in a small cap 9.
The lapping yarn is taken from the package 4 and is unwound, forming a conventional balloon which is wound around a core yarn 11 drawn off by a device to be described from a bobbin 12, by being unwound endwise or sideways, travelling by way of the tensioning device 13 and the tube 5. The winding is produced while the core yarn travels in the vicinity of the needle 7.
3,133,491 Patented May 19, 1964 This shaft 14 carries at its lower end a stack 23 of pinions of decreasing diameter, while the shaft 20 carries a similar stack 24 at the upper end.
One of the pinions of the stack 23 meshes with a pinion 25 on a small shaft 26, the other end of which carries a bevel pinion 27 meshing with a bevel pinion 28 on the shaft 29. The latter carries at one end a small wonn 31, and at the other end a bevel pinion 32.
The worm 31 causes the rotation of a wheel 30 attached to a disc 33, on which a rod 35 is pivoted at 34. The rod 35 is pivoted at the other end at 36 to a lever 37, turning on the shaft 38, on which is fixedly arranged a cam 39. A roller 49 on a rocking lever 41 bears against the cam 39. A contact strip 4-2 attached to the lever 4-1 opens and closes a circuit in the box 43.
According to FIG. 4, the closing of the contact causes the current to flow in the coil 44, which then pulls up the core connected to the rod 46 articulated to a cranked lever 47 pivoting at 48. '(See FIG. 1, top right-hand side.) The closing of the circuit causes the lowering of the rod and the claw member '49, which forms a clutch with the opposite claw member 50, is disengaged from the latter. The claw member or clutch plate 49 can slide but not turn on the shaft 51, which carries the driving roller 52 for the spool 53 on which the lap yarn coming from the spindle is wound, after passing through the guide '54 and a traversing system (not shown). It is the spool 53 which draws off the lap yarn. The clutch plate 53 is actually mounted on a small shaft 60 co-axial with the shaft 51.
The shaft 60 rotates continuously at high speed. It is controlled by the shaft 20, by means of the stack or set of pinions 24, the pinion 53 on the rod 54 and the bevel pinions 55, 56, 5'7, 58, the latter being keyed on the shaft 611.
The shaft 51 is normally subjected to a slow regular rotation, when the clutch 49, 59 is not operating. This slow regular rotation is derived from the pinion 28, which is controlled by the shaft 30, as indicated above. The pinion 28 controls another bevel pinion 59 on the shaft 61, which causes the operation of a train of reduction gears 62, the latter-of which rotates the shaft '63 with a toothed wheel 64 driving a chain 6 5, which passes around another free wheel 66. The latter is fixed on the shaft 67 with the toothed wheel 68, driving the chain 69 and the toothed wheel 76 which is fixed on the shaft 51. The latter can rotate either at slow speed or at high speed, through a known free wheel system 66 (not shown) associated with the clutch plate 49.
For the control operation, there is used a difierential system 71, one pinion of which is set in rotation by the shaft '61 by means of a toothed wheel '72 from a chain 73, and another toothed wheel 74, attached to one of the pinions of the differential 71 and fixed on the shaft 38. The other pinion of the differential, keyed on the shaft 38, controls the cam 39, while the satellite is connected by the lever 37 to the rod 35. When the core yarn 11 is being drawn slowly, the lapping yarn is wound as a knop and when it is withdrawn rapidly, it forms an assembly with the core yarn. Since the rapid withdrawal periods are varied, a yarn is obtained which has knops irregularly spaced therealong.
What is claimed is:
