Be it known that I, CARL H. HAUGK, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Butt Cutters, (for which Letters Patent have heretofore been granted to me by the Government of Germany, No.

- 23,382, dated January 27, 1883,) of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to an improved cutter for cigars which performs the twofold function of cuttingthe bunch, so that a spongy edge is imparted to the butt, and, second, of cutting the wrapper after its application to the bunch.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved cigar-butt cutter; and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

A in the drawings represents the bed-plate of this improved cigar-cutter, which is designed to be attached to abase block of wood, or to a table or other suitable support. This bed-plate is provided at one end with a. short upright standard, a, and at its opposite end with a longer upright standard, I).

To the standard b is applied two fixed cutting-knives, c d, arranged sidewise of, each other, the knife 0 being below the knife (I. A double-edged knife, B, is pivoted, by means of a screw, e, or otherwise, to the standard b, nearer the knife d than the knife 0, and so arranged in relation to the fixed knives that its lower convex serrated edge, f, operates in conjunction with the lower fixed knife, 0, with a tearing draw-cut, and its upper plain concave edge, f, operates in conjunction with the upper fixed knife, (I, with a direct smooth out. This oscillatory cutting-knife is provided with an upwardly-extending handle, B, having a knob, B", at its outer end. A contractile spibelow the fixed knife 0, and supported in bearings of the end standards, and a similar screwrod, D, is arranged in a like manner on a plane below the fixed knife d. These rods are provided with thumb-pieces O D at their outer ends, whereby they may be turned axially. A gage, E, arranged in line with the fixed knife 0 on the screw-rod O,is adjustable toward or from said knife on said rod by the turning thereof, and serves to determine the proper length of thebunch being cut. A standard, F, arranged in line with the upper knife, d, on the screw-rod D, is likewise adjustable on said rod toward or from said knife, and carries at its upper end a conically-tapered thimble, G. A removable socket, H, of an exterior surface adapted to fit within said thimble, is supported thereby. The interior of this socket corresponds to the shape of the tips of thecigars to be trimmed, and sockets of different sizes and" shapes to correspond with the varying shapes of the cigars are provided and may be interchanged with one another. The fixed knives may be vertically adjustable by means of slots and screws, as shown.

The operation is as follows: The gage E is adjusted at a distance from the fixed knife 0 equal to the length to which the bunchis to be cut, and the cigar-bunch, held between the thumb and finger of the left hand of the operator, is placed so that its tip rests against the gage and its butt within the concave edge of z the fixed knife 0. The knife B is then oscillated by the right hand of the operator, and its serrated edge comes in contact with the projecting end of the butt and severs it from the bunch. The handle of the oscillatory knife is then released by the operator, and the spring g returns the knife to its normal position. The serrated edge of the knife imparts a roughened or spongy condition to the butt, whereby it may be lighted more evenly and with greater facility than butts which are out with a plain-edged knife. After the bunch is cut to the proper length the wrapper is applied thereto. The wrapped'bunch is then placed in the cigar-cutter with its tip resting in the socket H and its butt in the fixed knife d. The movable knife B is again oscillated, and its upper plain edge, acting in con j unction with said fixed knife cl, trims the wrapper even with the butt. Both an unwrapped bunch and a wrapped bunch may be operated upon simultaneously by one movement of the oscillatory knife. This cutter is designed to be used for theibestclass of hand-made cigars in which a careful trimming of the butt-end without the least injury to the tip is desired.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, in a cigar-cutter, oftwo fixed knives in the same vertical plane and an oscillatory knife having cutting-edges on its opposite sides, pivoted between saidfixed knives nearer to one than to the other, and adapted to operate in conjunction with both said fixed knives simultaneously, with a drawcut as to one and a direct cut as to the other, substantially as described.

2. The combination, in a cigar-cutter, oftwo fixed knives in the same vertical plane and an oscillatory knife having a serrated cuttingedge on one side and a plain cutting-edge on its opposite side, said oscillatory knife being pivoted between said fixed knives nearer to one than to the other, and adapted to operate in conjunction with both said fixed knives simultaneously, with a tearing draw-cut as to one and a direct cut as to the other, substantially as described.

3. The combination, in a cigar-cutter, of a bed-plate provided with upright standards at its opposite ends, two fixed knives attached to one of said standards, and provided with curved edges adapted to receive the butts of the unfinished cigars to be operated upon, gages in line with said fixed knives and adjustable toward or from said fixed knives, and

an oscillatory knife pivoted between said fixed knives, and having cutting-edges on its opposite side's, whereby it is adapted to operate in conjunction with both said fixed knives simultaneously, substantially as described.

4. The combination, in a cigar-cutter, of a bed-plate provided with upright standards at its opposite ends, two fixed knives attached to one of said standards, and provided vwith curved edges adapted to receive the butts of the unfinished cigars to be operated upon, gages in line with said fixed knives and adjustable toward or from said fixed knives, and an oscillatory knife pivoted between said fixed knives, and having cutting-edges on its opposite sides, one of said edges being serrated, whereby it is adapted to operate in conj unction with both said fixed knives simultaneously to cut the wrapper of the wrapped bunch and to impart to the unwrapped bunch a spongy butt, substantially as described. v 5. The combination of a bed-plate having supporting end standards, one standard being provided withtwo fix'ed knives, a fulcrumed knife provided with a serrated lower edge and smooth upper edge, an adjustable gage ar ranged in line with one of said fixed knives, and asecond adjustable gage provided with a detachable socket for the head of the cigar arranged in line with the other fixed knife, substantially as described;
