LOCK FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS SLAIGHT, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Im proved Lock, Designed More Especially for Railroad Freight-Cars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an external view of my invention applied to a car. Fig. 2 an internal view of the lock, the front plate of the case being removed as indicated by the line :0, as Fig. 3. Fig. 3 a section of same taken in the line 00 m Fig. 2. Fig. 4:, a detached perspec tive view of a slide plate pertaining to the same.

This invention consists in the employment or use of a dog and sliding plate, provided with suitable tumblers, the above parts being placed in a suitable case and used in connection with a bolt; all being arranged substantially as hereinafter shown and described, whereby a very simple andeflicient self looking or spring lock is obtained.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a metal plate on which the case B of the lock is placed or secured. The plate and case may be of cast metal and cast in one piece. On the plate A below the case B there are two guides a, a in which a bolt 0 is fitted and allowed to slide freely, the upper end of the bolt C passing into the case B and being securedtherein when the lock is locked.
lVithin the case B there is placed a slide plate D which is fitted on and between proper stumps or guides b and has a spring E acting upon it, said spring having a tendency to keep the plate D thrust forward in the direct-ion indicated by the arrow in Fig. 4.
The slide plate D has an arm 0 projecting from it at right angles. This arm extends down and is in contact with a dog F which works or turns on a pin d.
The dog may be described as being formed of two arms a, e at right angles to each other the pin (Z, passing through the angle or through the arms at their junction. The arm 0 of the slide plate D, bears against a lip 7 of the dog F at the outer side of its angle as shown clearly in Fig. 4:. The end of the arm 0 of the dog F is of hook form as shown at g, and a recess It is made in the bolt C to receive the hook g. Against the lip of the dog F a spring Gr bears, said spring having a tendency to throw the dog F in the position shown by the red outline in Fig. 2'.
H represents a series of tumblers which are fitted on a pin it and are notched at their edges as shown at 2', and is a projection on the end of slide plate D.
lVhen the parts are in the position as shown in Fig. 2, the bolt C is locked within the case B, the dog F, retaining it, and it will be seen that in order. to release the bolt C, the slide plate D must be thrown back in the direction indicated by arrow 00 so as to allow the arms 0 to pass oif from lip f, and permit the spring G to throw the hook 9 out from the recess IL in the bolt as shown in red. in order to throw the plate D back in the direction of arrow .19, the tumblers H require to be moved by a proper key 1', so that the large notches in the ends of the'tumblers may be in line with the projection of plate D, and the latter therefore allowed to move in the direction indicated under the action of the key. In showing the bolt C within the case B the end of the bolt strikes the arm of the dog and throws the hook g of arm 6 into the recess h of the bolt.
The bolt secures a hasp, shown in red, on the plate A. the plate A and bolt C being attached to the car and the hasp to the door as shown in red, Fig. 1.
I do not claim the tumblers H for they have been previously used; but,
I do claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The bolt C dog F and slide plate D the latter being provided with the arm 0 and all arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
