SWEEP-COUPLING FOR GRINDING-JVHLLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,144, dated March 3, 1885.

Be it known that we, EDWARD M. WILCOX, a citizen of the United States, and WILLIAM J AY HOPKINS, a subj ect of the Queen of Great Britain, both residing at Whitewater, in the county of \Valworth and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improve mentsin Sweep-Couplings for Grinding-Mills; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, iand Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the coup- The object of this invention is to provide a simple coupling for attaching a sweep to a grinding-mill; and the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a grinding-mill the rotary portion of which is provided with pins or lugs B.
0 indicates the sweep to which the horse is attached. The sweep is provided with arms D D, the inner ends of which embrace the rotary portion of the mill.
E represents the coupling-plate, which is a casting consisting of the base-plate F, having the upper and lower marginal flanges, G, and the socket-wall H. The flanges G are turned outward, and the socketbearing H is on the inner face of the plate. These plates are formed with perforations is for the bolts 1, whereby they are secured to the in ner faces of the sweep-arms in position to engage the lugs or pins B of the grindingmill. The lower forward portion of the socket-bearing H of each plate-coupling is formed with an interval or opening, m, in rear of which the bearing is concave, as indicated at v. This opening at is large enough to admit the pin or lug B. The flanges G engage the edges of the sweep-arms. The sweep, provided with these coupling-plates on the arms,
is readily connected to the mill by simply dropping the sweep-arms in position so that the sockets pass over the pins or lugs B, the
sweep slightly backward, so that the seats u will release the lugs 13, and then the sweep can be lifted and detached from the mill, the lugs B passing out at the openings m. This coupling is stable and durable. N o coupling-holes are required in the sweep, except for the purpose of bolting the coupling plates to its arms. Those are not liable to become loosened.
Heretofore the method of connecting and disconnecting the sweep from the mill has been laborious,and also injurious to the sweep, as it has been necessary to take it apart before it could be attached to or detached from the mill. Another objection has been that the holes in the sweep in which the lugs or pins of the mill engaged have been destroyed by the continual wear of the iron lugs or pins against the wood. The present invention obviates these difficulties, and the operation of connecting or. disconnecting the sweep from the mill is so simple that any one can understand it and perform it with facility.
Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The sweep-coupling plate E, having the outwardly-turned marginal flanges G, to engage the edges of the sweep-arm, and the socket-bearing H, cast on its inner face,to engage the coupling lug or pin of the mill, and having an interval or opening, 1;, in its lower front portion for the passage of said pin or log, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a grindingmill having coupling lugs or pins, of a sweep having on the inner ends of its arms inside coupling-plates, E, marginally flanged to engage said arms, and provided with inside sockets, H, formed with openings in in their forward under portions, and rear concave seats, 1;, sub- In testiniony whereof we affix our signatures stantially as specified. in presence of two witnesses.
3. An iron socket attachment on the inner I end or arms of the sweep, adapted to engage 5 the lugs or pins of a grinding-mill in order to provide for the ready connection and disconnection of the sweep and mill, substantially as specified.
