Description

IJITED rarns Parnnr FFICEO DAVID STOLTZ, or SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
HAIR-DYE.
SPECIFECATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,121, dated March 3, 1885.
Application filed November 30, 1883. (No specimens.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID SToL'rz, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Hair-Cosmetics; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the manner in which I proceed to compound the different ingredients composing my cosmetic.
My invention relates to improvements in cosmetics for the hair; and it consists, essentially, in a compound of nitrate of silver, ammonia, extract of walnut, beeswax, and some fatty mattersuch as cocoa-butterthewhole rendered of such consistence as to admit of being put in the form of short sticks for use.
The object of my invention is to provide a hair-cosmetic that will restore the color, soften and render more tractable, and at the same time impart to the hair a rich glossy appearance.
I take one-eighth of a pound of walnut-bark and treat with one-eighth of a pound of ammonia-such as spirits of hartshorn-thereby obtaining an extract of walnut with a certain proportion of ammonia. With this I mix onefourth of a pound of nitrate of silver and one and one-half pound of a mixture of beeswax and cocoa-butter in equal proportions. The
whole is thoroughly stirred and heated to sufficient temperature to render the mass homo geneous, when it is poured into molds and allowed to cool, the presence of the beeswax causing the compound to become on cooling of the desired consistence. Other fatty substances or pomades may take the place of the cocoa-butter; but I prefer the latter.
The cosmetic may be molded into any desired form for individual use, though. it is preferably put up in small packages or sticks covered with tin-foil.
The principal feature in my cosmetic is the presence of the extract of walnut, which, combined with the nitrate of silver, imparts to the hair a more permanent and richer dye than is possible where the nitrate of silver alone is used as the dyeing agent.
The advantage of a cosmetic having dyeing properties and put up in the form of sticks is,
that the dye is applied directly to the hair,
and does not come in direct contact with the scalp and the roots of the hair, as is unavoidable in the use of liquid cosmetic dyes.
Having thus described myinvention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hair-dyeing cosmetic consisting of nitrate of silver, ammoniated extract of walnut, and beeswax, in combination with some fatty substance, as set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand.
DAVID sroLTz.
