To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of De Kalb, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Screen and Storm Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved combined screen and storm or weather door. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showing one or more of the panels in position. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line a w in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4. is a detail view, on an enlarged scale, of one corner of the door.

The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.

My invention has relation to that class of doors which are provided with permanent panels of wire screening and with removable imperforate panels; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts ofthesame, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the frame of the door, which is constructed in all essential particulars in the ordinary manner with side pieces, B B. top and bottom pieces, 0 G, and stiles or dividingpieces D D, of which latter any suitable number may be used, and arranged in any desired manner to form the desired panel-openings E E, which are rabbeted to receive the wire screening F.

The panel-openings E E are provided at their outer edges with grooves G, adapted to receive the outer beveled edges of the panels H, the inner edges of which fit in the rabbet of the vertical stile, which latter is provided with turn-buttons I, to retain the said panels in position. The said panels may be constructed of wood, metal, glass, or any other suitable material, according to the purpose for which the door to which the said panels are applied is to be employed.

When no center stile is used, it is obvious that the groove G is to be formed in one of the side pieces B, while the other side piece B is to be provided with the turn-buttons or other suitable fastening devices.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood.

The construction is simple and inexpensive, and the door, being constructed as described, may be easily and quickly converted from a screen-door into a solid or storm door for use in winter or in inclement weather.

I prefer in practice to provide the grooved or rabbeted edges of the doorframe with strips or cushions of rubber or other suitable material embedded in the same, as shown at K in .the drawings. Each of the detachable panels may also, when desired, be constructed of two pieces hinged together, so as to be more conveniently stored away in a small or narrow space.

It is obvious that in this invention various changes may be made with regard to the construction of details; and I would have it understood that I reserve to myself the right to all such modifications as may be resorted to without departing from my invention.

I am aware that doors have been made having permanent perforate panels and removable imperforate panels adapted to be removably secured over the perforated panels, and I do not wish to claim such construction; but

I claim In a combined screen and storm door, the herein-described door-frame, having outer stiles provided with grooves, and rabbeted center stile provided with turn-buttons adapted to extend over both edges of the same, in combination with the screens secured permanently in the openings thus formed, the rubber strips or cushions K, secured entirely around the edges of the permanent screening, and the detachable panels, the outer edges of which are beveled to engage the grooved outer stiles, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
