WEIGHING-SCALE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,583, dated February` 17, 1885.
Application filed April 11,]SS-l. (No model.)
, The weight, sliding on the beam, is provided With a projecting tongue and spring-lip that takes into the depressed middle portions of the graduat-ions ofthe scale-plate. The scale pan is suspended on knife-edges ot' the beam by a U-shaped link provided with a stop, to prevent the detaching ot' the pan. rlhe pan is provided with an elastic cushion at the under side and with a central depression or cup for the reception of the adj Listing-shot, which is retained by a covering-plate secu red by bent ends over the edges of the pan.
In the accompanying' drawings, Figure l. represents a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan, of my improved weighing-scale. Fig. 2 is a detail side view ot' the fulcrumed front piece of the scalebeam. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, partly in section, ot' my improved weighingscale. Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively a vertical transverse section and a vertical longitudinal section of the sliding weight on lines x x and y y, Fig. 2; and Fig. (3 is a detail seetion of the suspension-link of the scale-pan.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings represents the supporting post or standard oi' my improved weighingscale, the base of which is provided with a forward-extending heel, a, by which the tilting of the scale is prevented. The post A is provided with a horizontal bracket, B, that extends in opposite direction from the post A, and is provided at one end with a `forked vertical support, B, for the knife-edged fulera of the scalebeam C, and at the opposite end with a vertical guide staple or loop, B2, for the rear end of the scale-beam C. The scalebeain G is made of a hollow main piece of these parts is obtained. Ainserted and soldered into the rear end ol' the Ushaped cross-section, which is bent up or drawn out ot' suitable metal. On the outwardly-bent vtlanges of the U-'shapcd main piece is supported a graduated scale-plate, C', which is soldered, riveted, or otherwise secured to the U-shaped beam C. The ends d d ot the scale-beam t) are made of solid metal, the fulcrumed front piece, d, being provided with a shoulder, d?, at the upper part, against which abuts the end ot' the scale-plate, and with a second shoulder, d, at the lower part,
against which abuts the end ot` the hollow `main piece of the scale-bean1,as shown clearly in Figs. l and 2, As the end ot' the scaleplate C extends over the front piece, d, and beyond the point of connection ot' the beam with the same, a more rigid connection ol' The rear end, d, is
beam C.
The advantage of the hollow scale-beam C, having a scale-plate, C, at the top, is that thereby the weight ol' the scaleapan and ot the sliding connterpoise can be considerably decreased; and, secondly, that by the arrangement ot' the scale at the top ot' the beam the weight of the articles placed in the scalepan can be read olt' with great facility without stooping down and reading it ot't at the side ofthe scale-beam, as heretofore. A counterweight, C2, of Li shape, slides on the beam C. It is retained thereon by inwardly-preiccting stopscrews Z) b, which take below the ilanged edges ot' the beam. A tongue, b, made of a spring-plate that is riveted tothe inside of the weight G2, is retained by laterally-projecting stops or shoulders bl (shown in Fig. 2) on the weight C2, and provided at a suitable point within the weight C with a downwardly-bent lip, b, that is integral with the body ol the tongue b, and adapted to engage the dcpressed middle portions ot' the graduations ot' the scale-plate C, as shown clearly in Fig. 5. The lip b gives7 sniiieiently to clear the depressions ot' the beam when the weight C2 is moved in either direction over the beam. The iigiires indicating the graduations are preterably arranged at both sides ot' the middle depressed portions. rIhe weight C2 on being moved over the beam G is readily retained by the lip if at any one of the graduations of IOO the scaleplate, so as to facilitate thereby the (quick adjustment of the weight in weighing a letter, package, or other article.
To knifesedges of the front piece, d, of the beam (lis hung a scale-pan, D, by asuspensionlink, D2, and bent wire arms D D. The arms D are riveted to the link D2, that rests on the knife-edges at the end of the beam C, said link being made of cast metal, and provided with an upwardly projecting stop, D3, that is screwed to the middle portion or web of the suspensioirlink D2. rlhe lower lends of the arms D are attached to perforated ears e of the pan D. The middle portion ofthe scalepan D is provided with a depression or cup, j', and the latter with a central downwardlyextending stud, j, cast integral therewith.
rlhe depression or cup f receives the shot by which the proper balancing of the scale-pan and beam is adjusted. The stud f is covered with an exterior sleeve or socket, f2, of rubber or other elastic material, which acts as a cushion when thesca-le-pan strikes the table or other support.
To retain the shot in the cup f, a sheetmetal top plate, Dt, is extended over the upper surfacevof the pan D, between the end flanges of the same, and attached by its bent edges thereto.
The advantages of my improved weighingscale are, first, that by the light construction of the scale-beam the weight ofthe parts and the expense are decreased; second, that the weight ofthe letters and packages placed in the scale pan can be quickly and economically read oit' on the top scale-plate of the beam; and, third, that by the rubber cushion of the scale-pan the oscillations of the scale-beam are made shorter, so that the proper balance of the countcrpoise on the beam and of the articles placed is obtained in a quicker manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a weighing-scale, a scale beam composed of a hollow main piece of U-shaped cross-section and of a scale plate secured to the top of the same, substantially as set forth.
2. A scale-beam composed of a hollow U- shaped main piece, a scale-plate secured to the top of the same, and end'pieccs secured to the ends of the beam, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a hollow U-shaped main piece, C, top scale-plate, C', rear piece, cl, and front end piece, d, having a top shoulder, d2, and a bottom shoulder, d, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of a fulcrumed scalebeam made of a hollow U-shaped main piece and of a scale-plate secured to the top of the same, with asliding weight, C2, havinginwardly-projecting stops b b and an indextongue, Zi", substantially as specified.
5. rlhe combination of a i'ulcrumed scalebeam composed oi' a hollow U-shaped main piece and of a graduated scaleplate, the graduations ofsaid scale-plate having depressed middle portions, with a sliding weight, G2, having stops b I) an d an index tongue, b, with a downwardly-projecting lip, b, that takes into the depressions of Jthe scale-plate, substan tially as set forth.
6. lllhe combination,with a scale-beam having a scale-plate at the top, of a sliding weight, C, having guide-stops bb and an index-tongue. b', said index-tongue having laterally-projecting end shoulders, b, and a bent lip, b, substantially as specified.
7. The combination of the fulcrumed scalebeam C, having knife-edges at its front end, with a suspensioirlink, D, a scale-pan, D, sccured thereto by arms D`-,and a stop, D,wherc by the detaching of the suspension-link from the beam is prevented, substantially as set forth.
8. A scale-pan having a central depression or cup, f, a downwardlyextending buttonstud,f, and an elastic coveringsoeket,]'2, that acts as a cushion for the pan, substantially as set forth.
ln testimony that l claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
