STEAM- PATENT OFFIC ,OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
HOIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,423, dated February 1'7, 1885. Application filed June 14, 1884. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CAMILLE BEZANQON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Steam-Hoists; and 11 do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the acand to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved steam hoisting device specially adapted for use upon cranes and derricks to operate the hoistingtackle thereof by steam;
It consists in the direct attachment of the fall in a hoisting-tackle to the rod of the piston of a steam-cylinder attached to or sup ported by the mast of a derrick or crane of ordinary construction or to other suitable support, so that the inward movement of the piston in the steam cylinder will operate the hoisting-tackle for the purpose of lifting the load suspended thereto.
My device is especially adapted for use in loading and unloading vessels.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a derrick fitted with my improved steam-hoist, and Fig. 2 a sectional view of a two-way steam-cock used to control the admission and exhaust of steam 'to and from the steam-cylinder.
A is the pole or mast of an ordinary derrick, provided with a boom, 13, projecting therefrom, and upheld by a stay rod or rope, O, in the usual manner. The boom B is preferably pivoted and connected at its inner end to the mast A by means of a fork, D, embracing the mast, and whose arms are pivoted to trunnions or pins projecting from aring, E, encircling the mast.
Upon the body of the mast A, and dependent therefrom, is suspended a long steam-cylinder, F, preferably made in sections bolted together to form a continuous chamber. Within this cylinder is fitted a piston,G, from which a piston-rod, H, extends outwardly, in the cus tomary manner, through a stuffing-box in the head of the cylinder. Thecylinder is covered by asuitablenon-conducting jacket, S, to prevent condensation therein, and is attached forservice to the mast A by a suspending-hook, J, passing through or itself attached to a ring encircling the mast. The length of the corn pleted cylinder F will be governed by the height to which the load is to be lifted and the number of turns which the hoisting-rope is made to take through the block and tackle, hereinafter described.
To the foot of the mast is attached one of the pulley-blocks, K, of an ordinary block and tackle, and the second block, K, is attached to the end of the piston-rod H. The hoisting-rope, made fast to the lower block, K, is led through the two blocks, with any desired number of turns, and thence through a third pulley-block, K, suspended tothe upper and outer end of the boom 13, from which it depends for attachment to the load to be hoisted.
The admission of steam to the cylinder is controlled by means of a two-way cock, M, connected with the steam-boiler by means of a flexible pipe, N, and with the cylinder F by a pipe, 0. One passage, m, of the cock is made to admit steam direct from the boiler into the pipe O,to supply the cylinder, and the second passage, n, therein is made to connect said pipe H with an outward exhaust opening or pipe, P. A vent-hole, R, is formed in the outer end of the cylinder F, to prevent the formation of an air-cushion between said piston and the outer cylinder-head.
In the use of the device, the free end of the hoisting-rope being drawn outward for attachment to the load, and the piston thereby car ried to the outer end of the cylinder, the hoist is in readiness for operation. So soon as the ropeis properly hooked or attached to the load to be moved the two-way cock M is turned so as to admit steam into the lower end of the cylinder, and the consequent movement of the piston H will operate to draw upon the hoisting-rope L, and thereby raise the load.
To lower the load it is only necessary to turn the cock M more or less, so as to permit an exhaust of the steam from the cylinder and allow the piston to move outwardly.
I do not confine myself to the use of a cylinder suspended upon the mast of a derrick, for it is evident that the cylinder may be placed in any convenient position,and be secured to a post or other object, always providing that its axis is in line with the base ofthe mast, so that upon or connected with the derrick-pole, and the block and tackle will operate readily. a two'way cock for controlling the admission I claim as my invention and exhaust of the steam to and from said cyl- 1.
