No. 56,521 3 Claims. {61. 25-118) This invention relates generally to an improved onepiece sewer throat-and-curb form unit utilized in road construction.
In road construction the sewer lines and sewer inlets are generally constructed prior to construction of the roadbed and curbing. The sewer inlets are provided with a grating generally flush with the surface of the road and include an opening above the grate and beneath the curbing to receive excess run-o'n' during extreme conditions, i.e., sudden and severe flash floods, etc.
The sewer inlets below the grating generally have uniform dimensions and may be readily constructed by using suitable timber for forming the forms into which concrete will be poured. However, the overflow throat of the sewer inlet opens away from the edge of the grate and comprises a recess beneath the curbing. In order to conventionally construct the particular configuration required before such sewer inlets, the services of a skilled carpenter and helper must generally be utilized and the lumber used for this purpose is generally not salvable.
The sewer inlets are generally of a considerable size encompassing anywhere from six to eight feet of linear opening and the construction of the forms requires a special skill which is not generally available to the average road contractor.
In the past, various types of pro-assembled forms have been proposed to construct the entire sewer catch basin in addition to the special configuration of the inlet throat through the use of sheet metal, bolts and adjustable panels. The forms thus constructed are generally of tremendous mass, requiring installation by means of cranes, and the particular configuration involved will not permit ready removal after the concrete has set. Further, the forms, if removed as a single unit, will subject the set concrete to scoring and damage.
Although it has been proposed to disassemble these sheet metal forms in situ after the concrete has set, expedients such as headed bolts protruding into the set concrete result in damage to the set mass, or actual chiseling of these bolts in order to remove them after emplacement.
Still further, the use of nuts and bolts in the pre-assembled forms results in freezing of these fastening elements which are subject to rusting or foreign matter, and thus the use of a completely metal, pie-assembled form does not appear conducive to good practices of efficiency and economy in the art.
In addition, the huge mass of pie-assembled metal forms generally requires the pouring of suitable footings, allowing the footings to set, assembling and placing of metal forms, pouring and curing of concrete, the mechanical disassembly of the forms, and finally, the patching of depressions due to protruding bolts, etc.
A primary object of the invention is to provide a form construction which is supported on grade, does not require pre-poured footings, can be constructed in a single pouring to form a monolithic mass, which does not involve protruding fasteners to mar the set concrete, which utilizes the greatest economy of weight and material, may be readily assembled, disassembled and installed with a minimum of labor and without the use of heavy hoisting equipment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a onepiece sewer inlet-and-curbing form unit which may be easily installed and removed, provides uniform sewer inlets throughout an entire installation, permits conven- 3,l23,884 l atented Mar. 10, 1964 tional forming procedures to be utilized where dimensions are substantially uniform and regular, and wherein the use of which involves a minimum of skilled labor, time and expense.
Other objects and the nature and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawings in detail, and first considering FIGS. 1 through 6, in FIG. 4 a sewer inlet is indicated generally at It? and comprises a masonry collar 12 at the opening 14 thereof which includes at the back wall a lineal portion of curbing 16 reinforced, as indicated at 13, and incorporating an inlet throat 2d.
The opening 14- will have disposed at opposite ends parallel grate supports 22. The back and side walls 24 of the sewer inlet are to be poured simultaneously with the curb-and-inlet opening using form elements 26, see FIG. 6, comprising a conventional sheathing material which will be erected and suitably supported on grade in a conventional manner. The throat 29 will be formed by utilizing a form unit, indicated generally at 3th.
The form unit 345 comprises a metal body member 32 including a top panel 34 which will form the outer face 34', see FIG. 5, of the curbing section 16. The top panel 34 includes a plurality of transverse apertures 36 receiving suitable fasteners therethrough for securing an elongated support member 38 on the outer face of the panel 34, it being noted that the end portions 4-0 of the support member 38 project beyond the lateral side edges 42 of the panel 34. End portions 49 will rest on a timber form supported on grade and indicated generally at 44 and shown by phantom lines. in FIG. 1.
Determining the length of the sewer inlet opening and forming the upper surface thereof is an intermediate panel 46 which extends angularly below the panel 34, as clearly seen in FIG. 1. It will be noted that the panel 46 projects from an intermediate fold line 48 and the panel 34 forms depending portion 50 at opposite ends of the panel 46.
3 Depending from the fold line 52 is a bottom panel 54, the side edges of which are coplanar with the side marginal edges of the intermediate panel 46.
As seen in FIG. 6, a lower edge 56 of the panel 54 will rest upon the upper edge of the underlying sheathing element 26. Suitable sheathing members 53 will be provided with an angular cut at the top for closing off the open side adjacent the intermediate panel 46.
The form unit of FIG. 1 will be used in relatively smaller installations and thus it is not necessary to reinforce the lower edge of the bottom panel However, in larger installations where a wider or longer sewer inlet is to be constructed, as indicated at 1% in FIG. 11, the form unit indicated generally at 130 will be provided. In the larger installations, a rectangular grade casting 122 will be supported on a concrete collar 112. The form unit 13d will be utilized to form a curb 116, see P16. 12, suitably reinforced at 113, and forming a sewer inlet 129. In the embodiments of FYS. 712, the curbing 116 is formed on top of the sewer inlet which is poured in a single operation to form a monolithic mass 119.
As mentioned in regard to FIGS. 16, and shown by phantom lines in FIG. 7, suitable timbers will be erected to provide a support frame 1 44 supported on grade.
The form unit 130 comprises a metal body member 132 including a top panel 134 suitably apertured at 136 for receiving therethrough fastening elements for securing to the outer face of the panel 134 an elongated support member 3138 which includes terminal ends 140 projecting beyond the side margin of the panel 134.
Extending angularly from the longitudinal fold line 148 the entire length of the panel 13 is an intermediate panel 146, the side edge margins of which are coplanar with those of the top panel 134. Depending from the fold line 152 at the lower edge of the intermediate panel 146 is a bottom panel 154 suitably apertured adjacent its lower edge 156 for having secured to the outer face thereof a support member 138 including terminal ends 140' which project beyond the side edges of the bottom panel 156.
As seen in FIGS. 9 and 12, for example, the top panel 134 my extend angularly toward the plane of the panel 154 for providing a beveled face at the forward face of the curbing 116.
The terminal ends 140 and 140' of the support members 138 and 133' respectively, will be suitably supported therebeneath by the support frame 144 constructed in any suitable manner.
In both of the disclosed embodiments of the invention, the form unit 36 or 130 permits the ready construction of a sewer inlet and catch basin on a single pouring which has regular dimensions and yet provides means whereby the unusual shape and configuration of the sewer inlets 2t) and 120 may be readily formed with a minimum amount of skilled labor. The supports 38, 38', 138 and 138 are not subject to contact with the concrete which is poured, and accordingly may be reused when the form units 3 and 13d are moved to another location after the poured concrete has set. Further, the form units facilitate uniform construction of sewer inlets and the support portions which are utilized to support the form units may be constructed and disassembled by relatively unskilled and a minimum number of laborers.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and, therefore, the invention is not to be limited to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A manually-portable one-piece, face-form for forming the outer face of an integral sewer inlet-and-curb and being manually removable from a pre-crected form substructure for deposition on another similar pre-erected form substructure without dismantling of the form substructure upon which the face-form Was previously disposed, said face-form consisting of a single sheet, an elongated body member of a relatively rigid material, said body member comprising an inner and outer surface and including a planar, vertical top panel bordered by a linear top margin normal to mutually parallel, free, uninterrupted side margins, the inner surface of said top panel comprising means for forming the front face of a section of curbing at a sewer inlet, said body member including an intermediate, planar panel including mutually parallel, free, uninterrupted side margins and extending downwardly and angularly from said top panel at a fold line parallel to the linear top marginal said top panel, the inner surface of said intermediate panel comprising means for forming the upper surface of a sewer inlet throat immediately below the outer face of the curb face being formed by the top panel, said body member including a planar bottom panel depending from said intermediate panel on a fold line parallel to the top margin of said top panel, said bottom panel being disposed in a plane parallel to said top panel, said bottom panel including parallel, free, uninterrupted side margins, the inner surface of said bottom panel comprising means for forming the face of a back wall portion of a sewer inlet immediately below the outer face of the sewer inlet throat, and support means on the top panel out of the plane of the inner surface thereof and including terminal support portions extending beyond the mutually parallel side margins of said top panel.
2. A face-form unit as set forth in claim 1; said top panel including coplanar side portions disposed outwardly of opposite ends of the mutually parallel side margins of said intermediate and bottom panels, the mutually parallel side margins at opposite ends of said intermediate and bottom panels being in coplanar relationship, said bottom panel including an uninterrupted lower marginal edge for removable receipt on a horizontally disposed, pre-erected substructure form element.
3. A face-form unit as set forth in claim 1; said mutually parallel side margins of said top and intermediate panels being in coplanar relationship, said parallel side margins of said bottom panel being inwardly disposed with respect to the coplanar side margins of said top and intermediate panels, and second support means on said bottom panel out of the plane of the inner surface thereof and including terminal support portions extending outwardly of the side margins of said bottom panel.

A MANUALLY-PORTABLE ONE-PIECE, FACE-FORM FOR FORMING THE OUTER FACE OF AN INTEGRAL SEWER INLET-AND-CURB AND BEING MANUALLY REMOVABLE FROM A PRE-ERECTED FORM SUBSTRUCTURE FOR DEPOSITION ON ANOTHER SIMILAR PRE-ERECTED FORM SUBSTRUCTURE WITHOUT DISMANTLING OF THE FORM SUBSTRUCTURE UPON WHICH THE FACE-FORM WAS PREVIOUSLY DISPOSED, SAID FACE-FORM CONSISTING OF A SINGLE SHEET, AN ELONGATED BODY MEMBER OF A RELATIVELY RIGID MATERIAL, SAID BODY MEMBER COMPRISING AN INNER AND OUTER SURFACE AND INCLUDING A PLANAR, VERTICAL TOP PANEL BORDERED BY A LINEAR TOP MARGIN NORMAL TO MUTUALLY PARALLEL, FREE, UNINTERRUPTED SIDE MARGINS, THE INNER SURFACE OF SAID TOP PANEL COMPRISING MEANS FOR FORMING THE FRONT FACE OF A SECTION OF CURBING AT A SEWER INLET, SAID BODY MEMBER INCLUDING AN INTERMEDIATE, PLANAR PANEL INCLUDING MUTUALLY PARALLEL, FREE, UNINTERRUPTED SIDE MARGINS AND EXTENDING DOWNWARDLY AND ANGULARLY FROM SAID TOP PANEL AT A FOLD LINE PARALLEL TO THE LINEAR TOP MARGINAL SAID TOP PANEL, THE INNER SURFACE OF SAID INTERMEDIATE PANEL COMPRISING MEANS FOR FORMING THE UPPER SURFACE OF A SEWER INLET THROAT IMMEDIATELY BELOW THE OUTER FACE OF THE CURB FACE BEING FORMED BY THE TOP PANEL, SAID BODY MEMBER INCLUDING A PLANAR BOTTOM PANEL DEPENDING FROM SAID INTERMEDIATE PANEL ON A FOLD LINE PARALLEL TO THE TOP MARGIN OF SAID TOP PANEL, SAID BOTTOM PANEL BEING DISPOSED IN A PLANE PARALLEL TO SAID TOP PANEL, SAID BOTTOM PANEL INCLUDING PARALLEL, FREE, UNINTERRUPTED SIDE MARGINS, THE INNER SURFACE OF SAID BOTTOM PANEL COMPRISING MEANS FOR FORMING THE FACE OF A BACK WALL PORTION OF A SEWER INLET IMMEDIATELY BELOW THE OUTER FACE OF THE SEWER INLET THROAT, AND SUPPORT MEANS ON THE TOP PANEL OUT OF THE PLANE OF THE INNER SURFACE THEREOF AND INCLUDING TERMINAL SUPPORT PORTIONS EXTENDING BEYOND THE MUTUALLY PARALLEL SIDE MARGINS OF SAID TOP PANEL.
