4 Claims. (Cl. 25-118) This invention relates to aform for'concrete curb openings such as are utilized in the construction of roads and highways, and is adapted to be utilized in conjunction with the form boxes for inlets for storm sewers and the like.
This application is a continuation-in-part of the application of William E. Mitchell, Serial No. 420,652, filed April 2, 1954, for Inlet Mold Form.
The primary object of the present invention resides in the provision of a form for use in the production of curb openings of poured concrete which are adapted to be used in conjunction with previously poured drainage inlets, as are utilized in conjunction with road or-highway pavements.
The construction of this invention features a form for casting concrete cu'rb openings which is adapted to be adjustably positioned in alignment with an inlet opening whereby the entire curb openin "can be easily and economically constructed.
In the prior art construction of concrete curb openings, it has heretofore been necessary to employ carpenters or other skilled workmen to construct the forms for producing each individual curb opening, which forms are not readily reusable, thereby requiring a continual expenditure of time and etfort in the production of the forms for pouring concrete curb openings. The present invention utilizes the concept of spaced channel members from which the other necessary elements of the invention can be carried or suspended and which may be readily used and reused, thus not only decreasing the time necessary for pouring concrete curb openings, but also the cost.
Still further objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of a form for concrete curb openings that is simple in construction, highly eflicient in use, especially adapted for use in providing openings in divider strips or the like, as are utilized on the super highways now being constructed, and which may be erected even by unskilled labor.
These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this form for concrete curb openings, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view as taken along the plane of line 2-2 in Figure 1 and illustrating in particular the construction of the vertical supports which carry the angle members which adjustably support the cover plate;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view as taken along the plane of line 3-3 in Figure l and showing in an enlarged scale the construction of the core pieces and spaced channel members;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the form arranged for forming a curb opening in the opposite curb from that of the form of the invention shown in Figure l;

With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral 10 generally designates the form comprising the present invention for use in forming curb openings in concrete pavement.
The form '16 includes a pair of: generally channelshaped members 12 and 14 whichmay be formed integrally or in sections bolted together, as at 16. The bottom flange of the channel member 14 may have a plate 18 welded or otherwise attached thereto onto which a suitable weight, as at 20-, may be positioned 'in order to hold the form in place.
Welded to the upper flanges 22 and v24 are suitable upwardly extending angle members 26 and 28 which may be arranged singly or in pairs for greater rigidity. Bolted to and detachably secured to the angle members 26 and 28 are horizontally extending transverse members 30, 32, 34 and 36 which are of augleshape in configuration. The transverse members 30, 32, '34 and 36 hold the channel members 12 and 14 in spaced relationship. Between the transverse members 30 and 32, the channel member 12 is not provided with an upper flange, that portion of the flange 22 being cut away or removed.
Bolted to the transverse members 30 and 32' and extending therebe'tween are a pair of horizontal supports 35 and 37 to which angle-shaped vertical supports 38, '40, 42 and 44 are bolted or otherwise adjustably secured. Bolted to the'vertical simports 38, 40, 42 and 44, as at 46, are angle plates 48 which extend about the periphery 'of the figure defined by the vertical supports 38, 40,42 and 44. A cover plate 50 is horizontally adjustably secured to the horizontal flanges 52 of the angle member 48 by means of bolts 53 which extend through slots 56 in the flange 52 as well as through aligned apertures in the cover plate 50. Alternatively, in lieu of the slots 56, slots may be formed in the plate 50. The cover plate 50 is adapted to overlie and close ofi the inlet opening 54 defined by previously poured concrete structures, as at 58, 60 and 62.
Welded or otherwise secured to the channel member 12 is the flange 66 of a core piece 68, the core piece 68 being of such shape as to form the mouth of the curb opening.
The core piece 68 is provided with end pieces, as at 70, see Figure 9, which include a channel member 72 forming an extension of the channel member 12 and a generally trapezoidal-shaped depending portion 74 which closes the end of the core.
In Figure 8, there is shown the end piece 76 for the other end of the core piece 68 which includes a generally trapezoidal-shaped plate 78 as well as an angle-shaped plate 80 to which the trapezoidal plate 78 is attached.
It is noted that the cover plate 50 is adapted to rest upon the core piece 68 which is, of course, flanged, as at 82 for reception of bolts 84 or other suitable fasteners which extend through the apertures, as at 86, in the trapezoidal-shaped plate 74 and through the apertures 88 in the trapezoidal plate 78.
The core piece 68 is provided with a core piece extenlike, previously cast, and with, if desired, the reinforcing rods 96 of the previously cast concrete structures including the structure 62 extending upwardly, the form may be positioned in a manner so that the cover plate 50 may be adjusted to overlie and completely close the opening 54. Then, with the adjustable core piece extension 90 preventing flow of concrete into the core piece 68,.a concrete filling 100 can be poured with suitable reinforcing wires or rods 102 arranged in position to reinforce the structure. Then, the form may be readily removed by loosening such of thebolts fastening the parts together as is necessary and moved to the next site in a simple and time saving manner.
A peripheral form piece 106 for forming a recess for a manhole cover is supportable on the bolts 46.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A form for a concrete curb opening adapted to'be aligned with an inlet box comprising a pair of spaced channel members, transverse members secured to said channel members holding said channel members in spaced relationship, a pair of horizontal supports extending between two adjacent transverse members, vertical supports secured to and depending from said horizontal supports, angle members carried by said vertical supports, and a cover plate suspended from said angle members, a core piece secured to one of said channel members, said cover plate overlying a portion of said core piece.
2. A form for a concrete curb opening adapted to be aligned with an inlet box comprising a pair of spaced channel members, transverse members secured to said channel members holding said channel members in spaced 7 relationship, a pair of horizontal supports extending between two adjacent transverse members, vertical supports secured to and depending from said horizontal supports,
angle members carried by said vertical supports, and a' cover plate suspended from said angle members, said angle members including horizontal flanges, said cover plate being adjustable with respect to said horizontal flanges, a core piece secured to one of said channel members, said cover plate overlying a portion of said core piece.
3. A form for a concrete curb opening adapted to be aligned with an inlet box comprising a pair of spaced channel members, transverse members secured to said channel members holding said channel members in spaced relationship, and a cover plate suspended from two adjacent transverse members between said channel members and adapted to overlie an inlet box, a core piece secured to one of said channel members, said cover plate overlying a portion of said core piece, said core piece having a core extension vertically adjustably secured thereto.
4. A form for a concrete curb opening adapted to be aligned with an inlet box comprising a pair of spaced F channel members, transverse members secured to said channel members holding said channel members in spaced relationship, a pair of horizontal supports extending between twoadjacent transverse members, vertical supports secured to and depending from said horizontal supports, angle members carried by said vertical supports, and a cover plate suspended from said angle members, said angle members including horizontal flanges, said cover plate being adjustable with respect to said horizontal fianges,.a core piece secured to one of said channel members, said cover plate overlying a portion of said core piece, said core piece having a core extension vertically adjustably secured thereto.
