.GHABLES MARTIN, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
SMOKE-CONSUMING ATTACHMENT FOR LAMP AND OTHER CHIMNEYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,368, dated February 1'7, 1885.
Application filed September 29, 1884. (No model.)
10 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GnARLns MARTIN, of Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consuming Attachments for Lamp and other Chimneys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention refers to improvements in smoke-consuming attachments for lamp and other chimneys; and it consists of an attachment located at the top of a chimney and provided with a deflector having a central opening placed a short distance above the chimney, a second reflector above the latter, and carrying a bulb-shaped cap having perforated diaphragms at the top and bottom. An interior funnel-shaped shell forms with the cap an annular pocket, which is filled with a suitable absorbent for the products of combustion.
The invention consists, secondly, in means for suspending the shade from the chimney, as will more fully appear hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the attachment as applied to alamp-ehimney, Fig. 2, avertical central section; Fig. 3, a horizontal section on line w as, Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a horizontal section on line 2 2, Fig. 2.
similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
G is a chimney or glass cylinder of an ordinary lamp; B, a metallic sleeve, which is tightly applied to the upper end of the same; L, a bracket projecting from the sleeve B and supporting a lever, D, the inner end, D, of which is forked.
A is the lamp-shade; O, chains by which the shade A is suspended from the forked ends D of the lever D, which is retained by friction with the bracket or other means in any desired position. The lampshade A is suspended i'ree without touching the chimney, and may be placed higher or lower by means of the lever. The sleeve B also supports a smoke consuming attachment vertically above the chimney, which consists of a deflector, H, having a central opening the area of which should not be more than two-thirds the open- E. At its bottom the cap F is provided with a perforated diaphragm, J, having holes of about two millimeters diameter. Asccond diaphragm, K, having smaller holes, is located at the top opening of the cap F. An interior funnelshaped shell, M, extends inwardly from the lower diaphragm, J, and
forms, with the bulb-shaped cap, an annular pocket, 1', which pocket is filled with a mixture of lime and broken pumice-stone or other suitable absorbent forthe gases of combustion. By the arrangement of the perforated diaphragm in the cap the draft is diminished, whereby the unburned particles are forced back into the flame, so as to be more completely consumed, while the products of combustion that pass through the lower diaphragm are retained in the bulb-shaped cap and absorbed by the mixture in the pocket 73. The smokeconsuming attachment may also be used on a largerscale for the chimneys of any kind of furnaces. It may be made of metal or clay or both combined, and serves to c0nsume the smoke and neutralize the smells, and effects also a considerable saving in fuel by the more perfect combustion taking place in the chimney.
Havingthus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a lamp or other chimney, G, ofa supporting-sleeve, B, deflectors H and E, a bulb-shaped cap, F, perforated diaphragms J and K, and an interior funnelshapedshelLM, forminga pocket, 6, filled with absorbent material, substantially as specified.
2. In a smoke-consuming attachment for lamp and other chimneys, the combination, with the chimney G, of a sleeve, B, deflectors H and E, and a bulb-shaped cap, F, havng perforated diaphragms J and K, substanially as set forth.
3. The combination of a lamp-chimney, G, a
supporting-sleeve, B, bracket L, forked lever
