CAPSULE CUTTER. 110.312,361. Patented Feb. 17,1885.
Unirse STATES ArtNr Fries.
JOHN KREHBIEL, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE GLOBE CAP- SULE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CAPSULE-CUTTER.
SPECIFIC'A'IICC.T forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,361, dated February 17, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN KREHBIEL, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State ot' Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Capsule-Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description'thereot, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
which form a part of this specification.
rIhis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction and operation of devices for cutting gelatine capsules from the molds upon which capsules are formed.
The invention consistsin the peculiar construction of the various parts and their coinbinations and operation, as more fully hereinafter described.
Figure l is a perspective View looking toward the front ofthe device. Fig. 2 isa like View taken from the reverse side. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through one of the series of cutters.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot this specification, A represents the front, and B the rear, plate, through Awhich are formed the coincident holes a b, and between these plates is a plate, C, 0f sheet rubber, with holes coincident with the holes c b, but of larger diameter. Ring critters D,
sharpened on their inner periphery or edge, are fitted into the holes in the rubber plate, and held in place by the front and rear plates` which are secured together by the rods J E and nuts c d. These rods also project from the reverse side oi' the device, and are provided with adjusting stop-nuts e. In order to allow these stop-nuts to be adjusted, the rods are suitably threaded; or any other form of an adjustable stop may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In practice the stops are adjusted to the length the capsule is desired, such length being regulated by the distance between the 45 stop and the face ofthe plate B. The device then is grasped by the hand of' the operator, and the projecting ends of the rods entered into coincident holes in a plate of molds, which I make the subject-matter of a distinct 5o application for a patent, and hence do not describe in this specication. rIhe mold-pins of such mold-plate, being arranged in series coincident with the series of holes in this cutting device, enter the ring cutters until the stops are brought into contact with the front of such mold-plate. A rotary motion is then communicated to the plates carrying the ring cutters by the hand ot" the operator, which brings the cutting-faces into contact with the capsules on the mold-pins and cuts them off 6o in uniform lengths. The pressure necessary to perform this cutting is exerted through the rubber plate, the elasticity of which will allow of any slight variation of the mold-pins without interfering` with the perfect work of the cutters. y
I am aware ofthe Patent No. 297, 380,granted to James II. Glover, April 22, 1884, and make no claim to the construction shown therein as forming part of my invention.
I am aware that it is not new to employ in a capsule-cutting machine a cutter-plate constructed with an orifice surrounded by an annular beveled cutting edge projecting inwardly toward the center ofthe orifice.
I am also aware that it is not new to employ in a capsule-cutting-off device a ring cutter inserted in a rubber spring-plate and cutting upon its inner periphery.
Vhat I claim as my invention isl. rIhe combination, in a capsule-cutting machine, of an annular cutter sharpened on the inner edge and held in a suitable holder, a mold-pin attached to a suitableholder, and an adjustable guide attached to one of said holders for regulating the position of the pin as to its length within said cutter, substantially as described.
2. In a capsule-cutter, a series of ring cutters set in a` suitable holder, and a second 9o holder carrying a series of mold-pins, one of said holders being provided with a series of guide-rods and the other holder with a correspondingseries of guide-holes in which said guide-pins work, substantially as described.
3. A capsule-cutting-off device consisting of the following elements: rigid front and rear plates, inclosing a spring-plate, through all of which are coincident holes, those in the springplate inclosing ring cutters, stops, and guideroo rods, the parts being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Witnesses: JOHN KREHBIEL.
