Filed Nov. 17, 1961, Ser. No. 153,165 8 Claims. (Cl. 10138l) My invention relates to laminated make-up printing stamps and more especially to hand devices for holding letters and characters for imprinting the same on all types of surfaces.
An object of this invention is to provide a make-up printing stamp made from laminations which can be stamped out inexpensively in large quantities from flat sheet stock material, so the operator can be supplied with a relatively large assortment of such laminated elements of various thicknesses which will enable the construction of a wide selection of type character layout.
Another object of this invention is to provide a laminated make-up printing stamp of the character described, provided with improved means for yieldingly holding one or more rows of printing medium.
A further object of this invention is to provide means to permit the relatively easy changing, removing and replacing of the printing characters held in one or more of the holding slots, forming a part of this device.
A still further object of this invention is to provide means for increasing or decreasing the number of lines of characters or type that is to be imprinted or stamped.
A still further object of this invention is to provide means for incorporating in the laminated make-up printing stamp printing characters which may vary in various height sizes as so desired, which i accomplished by varying the relative thickness of the laminated spacing members forming a part of this invention.
An additional object of this invention is to provide a laminated make-up printing stamp in kit form so that the purchaser can readily assemble and reassemble the device, thereby enabling the user to construct a large amount of different type character layouts.
Another object of this invention is to provide a compact and durable laminated make-up printing stamp of the character described which shall be easy to use, comprise comparatively few and simple parts, be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and withal, practical and efficient to a high degree.
Other object of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of my improved laminated make-up printing stamp.
FIGURE 2 is a side view thereof.
FIGURE 3 is an end view thereof especially showing the print characters in position for use.
FIGURE 4 is a cross sectional view taken on line 4-4 of FIGURE 1, with parts broken away to show the interior construction of the thirteen laminated elements of various thicknesses.
FIGURES 5, 6 and 7 are plan views of the three different sizes in length of the laminated elements that are embodied in the showing of thirteen laminations being a specific example of this invention.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, 19 designates ice a laminated make-up printing stamp embodying the inven tion. The same comprises thirteen individual laminated members, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, '19, 20, 21, 22, and 23, each of which may be trapezoidal in shape and of three different relative lengths as shown in FIGURES 5, 6 and 7, all of which are held together in space relationship by means of conventional fastening means such as two male and female threaded bolts 24 and 25 at one end thereof. Said bolts 24 and 25 pass through all of the registering openings 35 in each of the thirteen laminated elements 11 through 23 and more especially shown in FIGURES l, 2, 3 and 4 as in laminated slot base elements 28, gripper elements 29 and spacer elements 36. At the opposite end there is provided an adjustable hold ing bolt 26 about midway from the upper and lower edges. Said bolt 26 passes through a registering opening 27 in each of two longest in size of the laminated ele ments 28 and 29 as more especially shown in the opening 27 in FIGURES 1, 2 and 3. The holding bolt 26 is provided with a threaded knurled nut 30 which permits the yielding or flexing of all of the long laminated ele unents 28 and 29 at this end, so that the slots 31, 32 and 3 3 formed therein to house the type characters 34, are all held together for printing operation.
It should be noted that the trapezoidal laminated members 11, '12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23 may be made of relatively different thicknesses so as to accommodate type characters of relatively different heights and also spaced apart in relatively different distances as may be so desired by the choice of the manufacturer.
It will 'be noted that the laminated make-up printing stamp 10 in the specific showing comprises three slots 31, 32 and 33. However, it should be distinctly understood that the number of slots may be varied from a single slot to any number of slots that may he desired by increasing or decreasing the number of laminated elements. It is also to be understood that the laminated make-up printing stamp 10 may be made from any suitable material such as plastic, metal, and synthetics or combinations thereof.
'It will further be understood that any suitable conventional scuring means may be used instead of the bolts 24 and 25, which may be in the form of rivets, sweated pins, machine screws, book binders, staples, bands and the like.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and Which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A laminated make-up printing stamp comprising a series of alternate longer and shorter laminations forming a slot to receive type characters between two succeeding longer laminations at one end of the stamp, a plurality of spacer laminations shorter than the shorter laminations being disposed between adjacent shorter and longer laminations at the other end of the stamp, fastener means disposed at the other end of the stamp and extending through all the laminations, and means disposed between the spacer laminations and the slots extending through the stamp being adjustable to urge the longer and shorter laminations toward one another for reducing the width of each slot and hold the type characters therein.
2. A laminated make-up stamp in accordance with 3 claim 1 wherein the series of laminations is comprised of a 'pair of longer laminations with a shorter lamination therebetween to form only one slot to receive and hold type characters.
3. A laminated make-up stamp in accordance with claim 1 wherein the series of longer and shorter laminations provide a plurality of slots that extend substantially parallel to one another.

A laminated make-up stamp in accordance with claim 3 wherein the first and last laminations of the series are longer laminations of greater thickness than the remaining longer laminations therebetween and are engaged by the means for urging the longer and shorter laminations toward one another, and the longer laminations between the first and last laminations of the series forming spacers between adjacent slots.
5. A laminated tmake-up stamp in accordance with claim 1' wherein the longer and shorter laminations are of trapezoidal shape so the one end is longer than the other end to provide relatively long slots with a relatively short handle portion to facilitate use of the stamp.
' 6. A laminated make-up stamp in accordance with claim 1 wherein each shorter lamination provides a base 4 K: a. for the type characters disposed in the slot formed by two longer laminations adjacent such shorter lamination.
7. A laminated make-up stamp in accordance with claim 1 wherein the fastening means is comprised of at least one pair of members releasably engaging one another, each of the members having a head engaging one of the end laminations of the series.
8. A laminated make-up stamp in accordance with claim 1 and the means for urging the longer and shorter laminations toward one another comprising an elongated member extending through the laminations having a head at one end engaging one of the end laminations of the series and having threads at its other end, and a second member having a head the other end lamination of the series and threadedly engaging the elongated member,
the members being rotatable relative to one another to vary the distance between their heads to vary the width of each slot.

Claims (1)
1. A LAMINATED MAKE-UP PRINTING STAMP COMPRISING A SERIES OF ALTERNATE LONGER AND SHORTER LAMINATIONS FORMING A SLOT TO RECEIVE TYPE CHARACTERS BETWEEN TWO SUCCEEDING LONGER LAMINATIONS AT ONE END OF THE STAMP, A PLURALITY OF SPACER LAMINATIONS SHORTER THAN THE SHORTER LAMINATIONS BEING DISPOSED BETWEEN ADJACENT SHORTER AND LONGER LAMINATIONS AT THE OTHER END OF THE STAMP, FASTENER MEANS DISPOSED AT THE OTHER END OF THE STAMP AND EXTENDING THROUGH ALL THE LAMINATIONS, AND MEANS DISPOSED BETWEEN THE SPACER LAMINATIONS AND THE SLOTS EXTENDING THROUGH THE STAMP BEING ADJUSTABLE TO URGE THE LONGER AND SHORTER LAMINATIONS TOWARD ONE ANOTHER FOR REDUCING THE WIDTH OF EACH SLOT AND HOLD THE TYPE CHARACTERS THEREIN.
