(Cl. 24-81) This invention relates to a multiple money carrier and is a division of application Serial No. 754,242, filed August 11, 1958, now Patent No. 2,955,337, dated October 11, 1960, which is a continuation-in-part of application Serial No. 557,923, filed January 9, 1956, now Patent No. 2,847,743, dated August 19, 1958.

It is an object of this invention to provide a money carrier with at least two clips hinged unaligned to each other by a hinge and with each clip with a pair of legs and a V-shaped portion with the front outer clip with its legs in front of its V-shaped portion and the back outer clip with its V-shaped portion in front of its legs. In this way, the legs of the clips will be on the outside of the complete carrier. When three clips are used, the second or intermediate clip will coincide with the first front outer clip, with the third clip in reversed position and unaligned relative to the first and second clips.

Another object of the invention resides in a money carrier having a data plate mounted and secured to the legs of the two outside clips with such plate or plates com prising a calendar, decimal table chart or any other desired data.

A still further object of the invention resides in a money carrier in which the outer clips or compartments will not cause or create a swelling or bulging of the clips at the hinge, and this is irrespective of the number of bills that may be placed in the clips.

Another object of the invention resides in the application of lock means attached permanently or removably to the clips or hinge means.

A further object of the invention resides in a structure to create an elastic or flexible friction so that the clips or compartments may be held open for better inspection of their contents when they are fanned out.

A still further object of the invention resides in the fastening means in a cover or fold over case with the clips accessible after the covers of the case are spread apart or opened.

The features of this invention involve the multiple clip unit in which the clips are frictionally held in the hinge for rotation with resistance, and the feature of a casing or cover connected to and in which the clip unit is removably or securely mounted.

Further objects will be apparent from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:

FIGURE 1 shows the money carrier in the open position with the hinge 10 provided with a plurality of wire clips 11 held therein by friction and each having a pack of bills 12 held therein.

FIGURE 2 shows the money carrier with the hinge 10 holding a plurality of clips 13, 14 and 15. The clip 15 has the side plate 16 secured thereto by means of rivets 17 passing through the eye 18 with the legs 19 on the outside and the V-section 20 on the inside. The second clip 14 has the legs 21 and the V-section 22 in reverse relationship relative to clip 15, that is, as viewed in FIG- URE 2 the legs 21 are in front of the V-section 22. Clip 13 is arranged in the same manner as clip 14, that is, with the legs 23 in front of the V-section 24.

In both FIGURES 1 and 2, the clips are secured in the hinge with frictional resistance as to the clips in the hinge parts by frictional contact movement of the ends of the hinge clamps with the clips.

In FIGURE 3 the clips 13, 14 and 19 are mounted in the hinge 25. The usual plate 16 is secured to the clip 19 as in FIGURE 2. The hinge 25 has a U-shaped member 27 secured to the hinge bar 26 with a locking clamp 28 pivoted thereon at 29. In the full line position, the clips are clamped in locking position, but in the dotted position the clips may fan out with the clips separated from each other.

FIGURE 4 shows the multiple money clip 30 similar to the structure of FIGURE 2. A bent metal band 31 is pivotally mounted or attached to one of the outer clips on the leg 32 at 33, and this metal band is adapted to clamp over the contents of the multiple clip device.

FIGURE 5 is similar to FIGURE 4 except that the metal band 34 is secured to both legs 35 at 36 of the clip device 30.

FIGURE 6 shows a multiple money clip with the two outer clips 37 and 38 and the intermediate clip 61 connected by a hinge 39. The usual metal plate 40 is secured to the clip 37 by rivets 41 and a larger plate 42 is secured to the clip 38 by rivets 43. The plate 42 may comprise a calendar or certain engineering data or standards of measure, etc.

FIGURE 7 shows the multiple money clip of the usual type, for instance, rotatably secured at the center 44 to an outer cover or casing 45 by means of the hinge bar. This figure shows by arrows 46 and the dotted line positions that the clip device can be rotated 360 if desired.

FIGURE 8 shows the clip device 47 and the clip 48 secured to a backing section 49 of leather, paper or other suitable material secured on a cover or casing 50. The clip 48 is secured to the section 49 by rivets 52, and the sheet 49 may be secured by an adhesive or by other means such as sewing, etc.

FIGURE 9 shows a money carrier 53 mounted in a cover or casing 54 by means of a removable section 55 which may be inserted or slipped in a pocket formed by a cover member 56. It is also possible to secure this section 55 in the cover 54.

FIGURE 10 shows the money carrier 57 mounted in a wallet 58 in which the carrier 57 is secured to a section 59 by means of which the carrier is held in the pocket 60 of the wallet so that it is removable if desired. The

center clip 61 is also shown in this figure as well as in FIGURE 9.

FIGURE 11 shows a clip assembly 62 with a plate 68 and wire-loops 69 mounted in a cover 63 by means of rivets 64 and a plurality of stitches 65. The hinge 66 is provided approximately at the center bend position 67'. Obviously, in accordance to my invention the clip assembly 62 can be attached by means of rivets 64 through wire loops 69 to the cover 63 so that, for instance, the name plate 68 of the clip assembly 62 is held on the outside of the cover 53- with the name plate, for instance, showing an advertisement, or more than one name plate can be provided on the clip assembly, or the clip assembly can be attached, for instance. directly to the cover 63 by its wire loops 69 without any plate. A plate can be provided on one of the other clip compartments so that in case of an advertisement inscribed name plate, the advertising inscription then in such case is visible when the cover 63 is opened.

A further advantage of this invention consists in a structure to create an elastic, flexible friction so that the various clip compartments are held open for better survey of their contents when they are fanned out and on the other hand do not meet any undesired strong and disturbing resistance when opening and closing such multiple unit.

In order to'obtain a desired friction in accordance with my invention, one of the outer clips is taken out of alignment or nesting with the other clips so that it is placed in the opposite direction than its preceding clip so that such arrangement results to an elastic friction within the hinge so that the wires touch each other when the multiple unit is opened and closed and thereby the desired elastic friction is achieved. Such achievement of elastic friction is still more pronounced because I have in accordance with my invention formed the upper loops with their upper bars with a slight curve.

Inasmuch as a wobbling of a multiple unit, within a hinge constitutes a pronounced disadvantage, another advantage of my invention comprises an additional frictional contact adjacent the hinge by providing at least some loops of the multiple clip unit in frictional contact with the hinge not only within the hinge but also between the outer walls of the hinge cheeks and some of the outer walls of the wire-loops.

It is noticeable that the wires in the prior patent did not include any such solution to create an elastic friction between the outer hinge walls and the wire walls as for instance in FIGURES 4 and 6 and other figures of US. Patent No. 2,847,743 which show at least one-side contact which is sufiicient for an elastic frictional contact in contrast to a mere pressing together, as in Patent No. 2,186,943. Such outside frictional contact as in my invention has been shown in U.S. Patent No. 2,847,743 where also an elastic frictional contact is achieved because with each opening and closing of the multiple unit, for instance, the wire-loops are forced to move accordingly by their elasticity and therefore no wearing out of such elastic frictional contact and no disturbance in the opening and closing or fanning out of the multiple clip unit is noticeable contrary to any friction which wears out and which causes disturbances in opening and closing.

The invention also comprises pivotal closures on a multiple money carrier. It is new to create such pivotal closures on a multiple money clip for the purpose of holding together a multiple money clip unit against undesired self opening and releasing the various compartments of the purpose of fanning out the clips. The new arrangement of the multiple clip permits also a holding together by the lower legs to extend over and around both sides of the contents of the money clip by releasable means on one of the other clips for closing and unclosing purposes of the unit.

A further part of my invention is a multiple moneyclip in a casing in which all of the multiple clip compartments can be put to use to hold bills or cards or other objects which one wants to carry in a dividing device and which permits, by a fanning out, a quick survey of the contents.

The invention also contemplates a wallet 58, FIGURE 10, with the multiple clip device 57 for a clipping in bills, cards and the like, the multiple clip device being held by a hinge. So far there exist money clips in a casing with only a single clip which has the disadvantage that, when bills or materials get clamped therein it can only be clamped in one bunch and on most of these oneclip devices in a billfold, for instance by using a known bobby pin, with holding means, arranged in the center of a billfold which, however, do not permit clamping in a stiff card because this would not permit the closing or the billfold. In accordance with my invention it is for the first time possible to have a multiple clamping device in a billfold which allows the clamping of stiff objects such as cards, as well as paper money. One can employ various methods for holding and the attachment of such multiple device in a wallet or billfold or casing.

In accordance with my invention, I, for instance, can by means of cold-set rivets attach to one of the outer clips a piece of material, preferably leather, artificial leather, etc., or other material, and then glue the so attached piece of material into a wallet. Such outer clip which I have used for that purpose can still be used as a clip to hold material therein. I can also hold such attachment on one of the outer clips invisible, because such riveted-on pieces of material can be glued on the inside of a cover-up pocket of a wallet or underneath a cover-up piece of material inserted in the clip, or the piece of material can be held without glue by friction or otherwise within a pocket. Also, stitches can be added or employed.

When I use a construction of a multiple clip unit as described above, I can provide the other outer clip with a name plate for advertising purposes, whereas the known disadvantages of, for instance, advertising inscribed billfolds or leather wallets by means of inscribing such advertising onto the leather are fully overcome because such methods had the. disadvantage of no wearing quality because the inscription on the leather came off.

I can, for instance, attach the multiple clip unit as per my invention to the overlapping casing by riveting each outer clip to one of the overlapping parts of the casing so that I still can make use of all three clip compartments for clamping purposes. In this case, I take, for instance, a piece of leather in about the length or longer of a dollar bill, fold the piece of casing in the center, and rivet one of the outer clips to each half of the casing, in which case the hinge-bar of the multiple clip unit is in the approximate center of the folded piece of leather material, for instance.

In such way of attachment, I can rivet thereon a metal plate in such a way that the metal plate with, for instance, advertising thereon is outside the leather cover and is riveted, at the same time when the respective clip compartment is riveted to the respective piece of material overlapping the dollar bills in the closed position. Also here one can, for decorating or advertising purposes, provide a metal plate to take the place of an inscription of foil material on the leather, which latter may wear off easily.

I can attach a multiple clip unit of my invention also by riveting the hinge directly to a cover.

As shown in FIGURE 12, the clips may be arranged with slight curvature in which the two clips 13 and 14 have the same parallel curvature, but the third clip 15 is curved in opposite direction causing an increased unalignment which will leave a space at the inner ends of the cross pieces but the outer ends will contact. This provides frictional resistance of the clips in the hinge relative to rotation of the clips when fanned out. FIG- URES 7 to 11 show the multiple clip unit held in a hinge for pivotal opening and closing and set into the leather or artificial leather casing or a casing from some other material by means of a rivet, eyelet, fastener, and the like, attaching the multiple clip unit to the casing, the rivet such as 44 in FIGURE 7 being set through the hinge. Also, more than one rivet may be used. However, it is of great advantage to provide only one rivet, such one rivet in about the center of the hinge. Such an attachment prevents a tearing out of the unit from the casing upon heavy use because the application of one rivet or eyelet, as an example, permits a rotatable movement and thereby does away with any strain which can lead to a tearing out of the entire unit from the casing. The rivet itself is, for instance, curled over against a washer.

The multiple clip unit in a hinge device for pivotal closing can be attached in many other ways to the easing. As a further example, some of the wire parts which extend sideways outwardly from the hinge can be used to offer the hold and the attachment to the casing, for instance, by sewing or by a threading means. In case of such an attachment where the wire parts which extend sideways and outwardly from the hinge cheeks are used for the attachment to the casing, the attachment may be made through any desired number of the wire parts, regardless if it is the outer or center clip, and in a manner that the proper opening and closing of the multiple unit is not interfered with. Thus, one can attach a multiple clip unit into a casing also by rivets, as an example, with the free loops of the wire legs of a clip compartment attached to the casing. In case such attachment is carried out only with one outer clip compartment, it is suggested in accordance with the invention to hold the opposite part, for instance the loop part through which the hinge extends, by means of thread extending through to parts of the cover or by any other means which holds the unit in position.

Another way of attachment of the multiple unit to the casing is, for instance, one in which the attachment to the casing is carried out in such a way that the multiple clip unit is provided, for instance, with a plate or bar or part attached to one of the clip compartments and the riveting or attaching to the casin is accomplished through the plate or part or bar which has been attached to one of the clip compartments.

The numerous examples which I have given for a suitable attachment of a multiple clip unit to or into a casing show that in accordance with my invention any part of the unit can be used for holding the multiple unit in or to a casing.

It is expressly emphasized that the scope of this invention is not to be construed as limited by the drawings or the description but that, to the contrary, it is limited to the claims submitted herewith defining the scope of this invention.

The clip elements of the multiple clip unit in accordance with my invention can be made of any suitable material and can have any desired shape and size.

What is claimed is:

l. A multiple bill holding device comprising a hinge having a base portion and two spaced retaining jaws with one at each end of the base portion, a plurality of clip elements each clip element comprising a main loop portion with integral inwardly directed short bar portions received within the retaining jaws and upwardly directed arm portions adapted to bear against corresponding sides of the loop portion, said clip elements being capable of relative movement in the hinge, the bar portions of the clips being curved as to the axis of the two bar portions of each clip to contact the retaining jaws with frictional resistance upon the relative pivotal movement of the clip elements, a cover for the clips and hinge, and a pivot pin passing through the base portion intermediate to the two jaws and the cover to permit rotation of the hinge and clips around the pin as a unit.

2. A multiple bill holding device comprising a hinge having a base portion and at least one retaining jaw, a plurality of clip elements, each clip element comprising a main loop portion with an integral inwardly directed short bar portion received within the retaining jaw and upwardly directed arm portions adapted to bear against corresponding sides of the loop portion, said clip elements being capable of relative pivotal movement in the hinge, a cover for the clips and hinge, and a pivot pin passing through the base portion and the cover to permit rotation of the hinge and clips around the pin as a unit.

3. A multiple bill holding device comprising a hinge having a base portion and two spaced retaining jaws with one at each end of the base portion, a plurality of clip elements, each clip element comprising a main loop portion with integral inwardly directed short bar portions received within the retaining jaws and upwardly directed arm portions adapted to bear against corresponding sides of the loop portion, said clip elements being capable of relative pivotal movement in the hinge, a cover for the clips and hinge, and a pivot pin passing through the base portion intermediate to the two jaws and the cover to permit rotation of the hinge and clips around the pin as a unit.

A multiple bill holding device comprising a hinge having a base portion and two spaced retaining jaws, a plurality of clip elements arranged to rotate in the hinge and each comprising a main loop portion with integral inwardly directed short bar portions received within the retaining jaws and upwardly directed arm portions adapted to bear against corresponding sides of the loop portion, the bar portions of the clip portions being curved as to the axis of rotation of the two bar portions of each clip element to contact the retaining jaws in the hinge and the bar portions against each other with frictional resistance upon the relative movement of the clip elements and the hinge, two adjacent clip elements being curved as to the bar portions in opposite direction relative to each other to cause an increased friction and which will provide a space at the inner ends of the loop portions as to adjacent clip elements with the outer ends thereof in contact with each other.

Claims (1)

1. A MULTIPLE BILL HOLDING DEVICE COMPRISING A HINGE HAVING A BASE PORTION AND TWO SPACED RETAINING JAWS WITH ONE AT EACH END OF THE BASE PORTION, A PLURALITY OF CLIP ELEMENTS EACH CLIP ELEMENT COMPRISING A MAIN LOOP PORTION WITH INTEGRAL INWARDLY DIRECTED SHORT BAR PORTIONS RECEIVED WITHIN THE RETAINING JAWS AND UPWARDLY DIRECTED ARM PORTIONS ADAPTED TO BEAR AGAINST CORRESPONDING SIDES OF THE LOOP PORTION, SAID CLIP ELEMENTS BEING CAPABLE OF RELATIVE MOVEMENT IN THE HINGE, THE BAR PORTIONS OF THE CLIPS BEING CURVED AS TO THE AXIS OF THE TWO BAR PORTIONS OF EACH CLIP TO CONTACT THE RETAINING JAWS WITH FRICTIONAL RESISTANCE UPON THE RELATIVE PIVOTAL MOVEMENT OF THE CLIP ELEMENTS, A COVER FOR THE CLIPS AND HINGE, AND A PIVOT PIN PASSING THROUGH THE BASE PORTION INTERMEDIATE TO THE TWO JAWS AND THE COVER TO PERMIT ROTATION OF THE HINGE AND CLIPS AROUND THE PIN AS A UNIT.
