(Cl. 2211-113) The present invention relates/in general to cartons and more particularly to a carton for carrying a plurality of articles, such as bottles or cans.

An object of the present invention is to provide a carton for carrying articles that is economical to manufacture.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a carton for carrying articles, such as bottles or cans, wherein the blank from which the carton is formed requires less material.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a carton for carrying articles wherein the blank from which the carton is formed has a rectangular conguration.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a carton for carrying articles which is strong and sturdy as well as economical to manufacture and which can be constructed with simple operations that require less complicated equipment or machinery.

Other objects will appear upon perusal of the detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, -in which:

FIGS. 3 5, inclusive, are views illustrating the sequence for forming the carton shown in FIG. 1 from the carton blank illustrated in FIG. 2.

FIG. 6 is :a perspective Iview of the carrying carton of the present invention illustrating a locking arrangement thereof. The carton A (FIG. 1) `of the present invention is suitable for use in the -merchandising of food products as a carrier for a plurality of bottled or canned beverages. The carton A is formed from a flat, one-piece, rectangular blank 10 (FIG. 2) which is made from suitable material, such as paperboard. As shown in FIG. 2, the blank 10 comprises a centrally disposed bottom panel 11 with

parallel fold lines

12 and 13 disposed along opposite side edges of the panel 11. Along opposite end edges of the bottom panel 11 are located

parallel cut lines

14 and 15. Midway between and parallel with the

12 and 13, the panel 11 includes a scored line 16. The panel 11 also includes

17 and 18 adjacent the cut line 14, which are at right angles to and intersect the scored line 16. In a similar manner, the panel 11 includes

19 and 20 adjacent the cut line 15, which are at right angles to and intersect the scored line 16.

At the four corners of the rectangular blank 1l) are located compartment sections 40-43, inclusive, which are foldable about the fold lines 32-35, respectively. The compartment section 42 is divided into four equal rectangular wall panels 80-83 by fold lines 84-86, which compartment wall panels are similar to the compartment wall panels 47-50. Along the edge of the compartment section 42 aligned with the fold line 13 is a cut line 87 that extends to the cut line 15. Formed in the compartment wall panel 81 is a notch 88. Surrounding the notch 88 are arcuate interlocking surfaces 89a and 89b arranged to enter the openings defined by the

cut lines

19 and 20 for gripping a portion of the bottom panel 11 therebetween.

As shown in FIG. 2, the compartment section 43 is similar in construction to the compartment section 41 and is divided into four compartment wall panels 90-93 by fold lines 94-96. Formed in the compartment panel 92 is a notch 97. Surrounding the notch 97 are arcuate interlocking walls 98 and 99 arranged to enter the openings dened by the

17 and 18 for gripping the portion of the bottom panel 11 therebetween. The compartment wall panel 92 also includes a fold line 100 that is parallel with the fold line 13 and extends to the fold line 95. Joining the fold line 100 at right angles thereto are parallel cut lines 101 and 102. The cut line 101 is aligned with the fold line 95. The fold line 10i! and the cut lines 101 and 102 form a hinge or ilap 103, the purpose of which will be described hereinafter. Joining the cut line 101 along edges of the

The handle section is formed with an opening 116 that is Ysuitable for receiving fingers of a person transporting the carton A. Adjacent the opening 116 is a fold line 117. The handle section 115 also includes a fold line 118 that is disposed adjacent to and parallel with the cut line 44. Aligned with the

53 and 96 are a fold line 119 and a cut line 120 of the handle section 115. A suitable cut-out section 122 is formed in the handle section 115 adjacent the cut line 120. Extending between the cut-out section 122 and the cut line 112 are

Disposed between the

compartment sections

41 and 42 in alignment with the bottom panel 11 is a handle section 130. The handle section 130 if formed with an opening 131 that is suitable for receiving fingers of a person transporting the carton A. Adjacent the opening 131 is a fold line 132. The handle section 130 also includes a fold line 133 that is disposed adjacent to and parallel with the cut line 87. Aligned with the fold lines 61 and 84 are a fold line 134 and a cut line 135 of the handle section 130. A suitable cut-out section 138 is formed in the handle section 130 adjacent the cut line 135. Extending between the cut-out section 138 and the cut line 75 are

139 and 140 that are parallel with the fold line 134. A fold line 136 extends between the cut lines 1S and 135. The handle section 13G is hinged to the compartment section 41 by the previously described ilap 73.

In forming the carrying carton A from the blank 10, the portion of the handle section 115 adjacent the cut line 44 is folded toward the surface exposed in FIG. 2 about the

118 and 121 to form a folded edge for the handle section 115. Thereupon, the portion of the handle section 115 adjacent the cut line 14 is folded toward the surface exposed in FIG. 2 about the

fold lines

119, 123 and 124 in an accordion manner and in overlapping relation to the main body portion of the handle section 115. Subsequently, the handle section 11S is folded about the fold line 10i) by means of the hinge 103 to assume a position below and projecting from the compartment section 43 as shown in FIG. 3. It is to be observed that the folded handle section 115 is of the same length as the bottom panel 11.

The portion of the handle section 130 adjacent the cut line S7 is folded toward the surface exposed in FIG. 2 about the

133 and 136 to form a folded edge for the handle section 130. Thereupon, the portion of the handle section 130 adjacent the cut line 1S is folded toward the surface exposed in FIG. 2 about the

134, 139 and 140 in an accordion manner and in overlapping relation to the main body portion f the handle section 130. Subsequently, the handle section 130 is folded about the fold line 70 by means of the hinge '73 to assume a position below and projecting from the compartment section 41 as shown in FIG. 3. It is to be observed that the folded handle section 130 is of the same length as the bottom panel 11 and the folded handle section 115.

Subsequently, the compartment wall panels 47-50 are folded toward the surface of the wall panel 30 exposed in FIG. 2 about the fold lines 51-53 to form the walls of a compartment having a square cross-sectional area. A suitable adhesive, such as glue, is placed on the surface of the compartment wall panel 47 facing the side wall panel 30. Thereupon, the compartment section 40 is folded toward the surface of the side wall panel 30 exposed in FIG. 2 about the fold line 32 until the adhesive surface of the compartment wall panel 47 adheres securely to the side wall panel 30 as shown in FIG. 4.

The compartment wall panels 57-60 are folded toward the surface of the wall panel 30 exposed in FIG. 2 about the fold lines 61-63 to form the walls of a compartment having a square cross-sectional area. A suitable adhesive, such as glue, is placed on the surface of the compartment wall panel 60 facing the side Wall panel 3i). Thereupon, the compartment section 41 is folded toward the surface of the side wall panel 30 exposed in FIG. 2 about the fold line 33 until the adhesive surface of the compartment Wall panel 60 adheres securely to the side wall panel 30 as shown in FIG. 4.

When the compartment section 41 is folded to the position shown in FIG. 4, it carries with it the folded handle section 130, which rests on the

49 and 58 with the overlapping portions thereof facing upwardly. The hinge 73 is fully extended and is in juxtaposition with the compartment wall panel 58. The folded

48 and 59 in conjunction with the portion of the side wall panel 30 therebetween form an additional compartment between the folded compartment sections 40 and 41 (FIG. 4).

The compartment wall panels -83 are folded toward the surface of the Wall panel 31 exposed in FIG. 2 about the fold lines 84-86 to form the walls of a compartment having a square cross-sectional area. A suitable adhesive, such as glue, is placed on the surface of the compartment wall panel 83 facing the side wall 31. Thereupon, the compartment section 42 is folded toward the surface of the side wall panel 31 exposed in FIG. 2 about the fold line 35 until the adhesive surface of the compartment wall panel 83 adheres securely to the side wall panel 31 as shown in FIG. 4.

The compartment wall panels -93 are folded toward the surface of the wall panel 31 exposed in FIG. 2 about the fold lines 94-96 to form the walls of a compartment having a square cross-sectional area. A suitable adhesive, such as glue, is placed on the surface of the Compartment wall panel 90 facing the side wall panel 31. Thereupon, the compartment section 43 is folded toward the surface of the side wall panel 31 exposed in FIG. 2 about the fold line 34 until the adhesive surface of the compartment wall panel 90 adheres securely to the side Wall panel 31 as shown in FIG. 4.

When the compartment section 43 is folded to the position shown in FIG. 4, it carries with it the folded handle section 11S, which rests on the

81 and 92 with the overlapping portions thereof facing upwardly. The hinge 103 is fully extended and is in juxtaposition with the compartment wall panel 92. The folded

82 and 91 in conjunction with the portion of the side wall panel 31 therebetween form an additional compartment between the folded compartment sections 42 and 43 (FIGS. 1 and 4).

After the foregoing is accomplished, a suitable adhesive, such as glue, is placed on the upwardly Vfacing surfaces of the handle sections 15b and v130 (FIG. 4). Thereupon, the

30 and 31 are folded about the fold lines 12 and 13, respectively, in the manner shown in FIG. 5 until the lower extremities of the compartment sections 4(1 43 are ush and .in even contact with the facing surface of the bottom panel 11 (-FIG. 6). The arcuate interlocking surfaces adjacent the

41 and 42 to the bottom panel 11.

The facing adhesive surfaces of the handle sections and 1351 are now pressed rmly toward one another so that the facing surfaces adhere to one another to form the handle for the carton A. The tabs adjacent the fold lines 1117 and 11S are folded thereabout and the carton A is formed for .use as a carrier for food products.

It is to be understood that modifications and variations of the embodiment of the invention disclosed herein may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and des-ire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. -A carton comprising a bottom panel, upstanding wall panels disposed along opposite edges of said bottom panel, a first compartment disposed over said bottom panel at an upstanding edge of one of said wall panels, a second compartment disposed over said bottom panel at an upstanding edge of another of said wall panels, a first upstanding handle section disposed between said wall panels, a flap on said first handle section hinged to said first compartment, a second upstanding handle disposed between said -wall panels, and a iiap on said first handle section hinged to said second compartment.

2. A carton comprising a bottom panel, upstanding wall panels disposed along opposite edges of said lbottom panel, a first compartment disposed over said bottom panel at an upstanding edge of one of said 'wall panels, a second compartment disposed over said bottom panel at an upstanding edge of another of said wall panels, said upstanding edges of said wall panels being in diagonally opposite locations relative to said bottom panel, a first upstanding handle section disposed between said compartments, a flap on said first handle section hinged to said first compartment, a second upstanding handle section disposed between said compartments in juxtaposition with said first handle section, and a flap on said second handle section hinged to said second compartment.

3. A carton comprising a bottom panel, a first upstanding wall panel disposed along an edge of said bottom panel, a second upstanding wall panel d-isposed along an opposite edge of said bottom panel, first compartments disposed over said bottom panel and foldable about opposite upstanding edges of said first wall panel, second compartments disposed over said bottom panel and lfoldable about opposite upstanding edges of said second wall panel, a first upstanding handle section disposed between said first and second compartments, a fiap on said first handle ysection hinged to one of said first compartments, a second upstanding handle section disposed between said first and second compartments in juxtaposition with said first handle section, and a flap on said second handle section hinged to one of said second compartments.

4. A carton comprising a bottom panel, a first upstanding side wall panel disposed along a side edge of said bottom panel, a second upstanding side wall panel disposed along an opposite side adge of said bottom panel, first compartments disposed over said bottom panel and foldable about opposite upstanding edges of said first Wall panel, said first compartments having square cross-sec tional areas with wall panels thereof forming end wall sections along the end edges of said bottom panel, second compartments disposed over said bottom panel and foldable about opposite upstanding edges of said second lwall panel, said second compartments having square crosssectional areas with wall panels thereof forming end wall sections along the end edges of said bottom panel, a first upstanding handle section disposed between said first and second compartments, a flap on Isaid first handle section hinged to one of said first compartments, a second upstanding handle section disposed between said -first and second compartments in juxtaposition with said first handle section, and a fiap on said second handle section hinged to one of said second compartments located in `a direction diagonally oppos-ite from said hinged fir-st compartment.

5. A carton comprising a bottom panel having pairs of out ylines .adjacent end edges thereof, a first upstanding side wall panel disposed along a side edge of said bottom panel, a second upstanding side wall panel disposed along an opposite side `edge of said bottom panel, first compartments disposed in overlying relation to said botto-rn panel and foldable about opposite upstanding edges of said first wall panel, said first compartments having square crosssectional areas with wall panels thereof forming end wall sections along the end edges of said bottom panel, each of said first compartments having a notch therein adjacent s-aid bottom panel with interlocking surfaces received by said bottom panel at the pair of said cut lines adjacent the end edge of said bottom panel associated therewith, second compartments disposed in overlying relation to said bottom panel and foldable about opposite upstanding edges of said second wall panel, said second compartments having square cross-sectional areas with -wall panels thereof forming end wall sections along the end edges of -said bottom panel, each of said second compartments having `a notch therein adjacent said bottom panel with interlocking surfaces received by said bottom panel at the pair of said cut lines adjacent the end edge of said bottom panel associated therewith, -a first upstanding handle section disposed between said first and second compartments and hinged to one of said first compartments, and a second upstanding handle section disposed between said first and second compartments in juxtaposition with said first handle section and hinged to one of said second compartments located in .a direction diagonally opposite from said hinged first compartment.

6. A blank for forming a carton with a handle comprising a bottom panel, side wall panels foldable about opposite iside edges of said bottom panel for forming facing side walls, said side wall panels having end edges aligned with the end edges of said bottom panel, first compartment sections foldable about opposite end edges of one of said wall panels, said first compartment sections having their side edges aligned with the side edges of said one wall panel, second compartment sections foldable about opposite end edges of another of said wall panels, said second compartment Sections having their side edges aligned with the side edges of said other wall panel, a handle section disposed adjacent each end edge or said bottom panel between compartment sections having aligned end edges, said handle sections having their end edges aligned with the end edges of the associated compartment sections, and a flap on each of said handle sections, said fiaps being individually hinged to diagonally opposite compartment sections.

7. A blank for forming a carton with a handle comprising a bottom panel, a first wall panel foldable along a side edge of said bottom panel for forming a side wall, a )second wall panel foldable along an opposite side edge of said bottom panel for forming a side wall facing the side wall formed by said first wall panel, a first compartment section foldable along an end edge of said first wall panel, a second compartment section foldable along an opposite end edge of said first wall panel, a third compartment section foldable along an end edge of said second wall panel, said edge of Isaid second wall panel being aligned with the end edge about which said first compartment section is foldable, a fourth compartment section foldable along an opposite end edge of said second wall panel, said opposite end edge of said second wall panel being aligned with the end edge about which said second compartment is foldable, a first handle section disposed adjacent an end edge of said bottom panel between said first and third compartment sections, a flap on said first handle section hinged to said third compartment section, a second handle section disposed adjacent an opposite end edge of said bottom panel between said second and fourth compartment sections, and a flap on said second handle section hinged to said second compartment section.

Claims

8. A BLANK FOR FORMING A CARTON WITH A HANDLE COMPRISING A BOTTOM PANEL, SIDE WALL PANELS FOLDABLE ABOUT OPPOSITE SIDE EDGES OF SAID BOTTOM PANEL FOR FORMING FACING SIDE WALLS, SAID SIDE WALL PANELS HAVING END EDGES ALIGNED WITH THE END EDGES OF SAID BOTTOM PANEL, FIRST COMPARTMENT SECTIONS FOLDABLE ABOUT OPPOSITE END EDGES OF ONE OF SAID WALL PANELS, SAID FIRST COMPARTMENT SECTIONS HAVING THEIR SIDE EDGES ALIGNED WITH THE SIDE EDGES OF SAID ONE WALL PANEL, EACH OF SAID FIRST COMPARTMENT SECTIONS HAVING A PLURALITY OF WALL PANELS FOLDABLE ABOUT FOLD LINES TO FORM A COMPARTMENT WITH A SQUARE CROSS-SECTIONAL AREA, SECOND COMPARTMENT SECTIONS FOLDABLE ABOUT OPPOSITE END EDGES OF ANOTHER OF SAID WALL PANELS, SAID SECOND COMPARTMENT SECTIONS HAVING THEIR SIDE EDGES ALIGNED WITH THE SIDE EDGES OF SAID OTHER WALL PANEL, EACH OF SAID SECOND COMPARTMENT SECTIONS HAVING A PLURALITY OF WALL PANELS FOLDABLE ABOUT FOLD LINES TO FORM A COMPARTMENT WITH A SQUARE CROSS-SECTIONAL AREA, A HANDLE SECTION DISPOSED ADJACENT EACH END EDGE OF SAID BOTTOM PANEL BETWEEN COMPARTMENT SECTIONS HAVING ALIGNED END EDGES, SAID HANDLE SECTIONS HAVING THEIR END EDGES ALIGNED WITH THE END EDGES OF THE ASSOCIATED COMPARTMENT SECTIONS, AND A FLAP ON EACH OF SAID HANDLE SECTIONS, SAID FLAPS BEING INDIVIDUALLY HINGED TO DIAGONALLY OPPOSITE COMPARTMENT SECTIONS.
