Description

Jan. 28, 1964 1. FRACALANIZA 3,119,123
SINK WITH VALVED DRAIN Filed May 1961 1V0 F RACAL ANZA IN V EN TOR.
United States Patent 3,119,123 timid Wllil VALVED DRAEN llv'o Fracalanza, fiao Paulo, Brazil, assignor to Aco lnoxidavel Fabril Guarulhos S/A, Sao Paulo, Brazil,
a corporation of Brazil Filed May 26, 1961, Ser- No. 113,035 Claims priority, application Brazil Nov. 1, 1960 3 Qlaims. (6i. 4-287) The present invention relates to improvements in or relating to sinks fitted with a discharge valve having a single removable component.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a novel sink arrangement of metal or of any other suitable material, with an improved valved drain.
According to a feature of the invention, the drain comprises a generally fiat valve portion, integral with the sink bottom and recessed therebelow at its outlet, while an annular wall portion, diverging upwardly from this valve portion, forms a valve seat. An upwardly and inwardly central projection of the valve portion cooperates with a valve disk having an elongated opening therefor, whereby the central projection holds the disk out of engagement with the seat in one position but permits such engagement in another relative angular position of the valve disk and valve portion.
The valve portion is perforated and can be integral with the sink to reduce considerably the cost of production of both valve and sink.
Further objects, features and advantages of the invention will become more readily apparent from the following description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 shows a. partial longitudinal section of the bottom of a sink wherein the valved drain of the present invention is situated, the valve blocking the outflow of the water;
FIG. 2 is a similar view, with the valve turned at 90 degrees, permitting the efilux of the water;
FIG. 3 is a top view of the bottom of the sink;
FIG. 4 is a vertical section of the removable tray or valve disk which fits into the bottom of the sink, and
FIG. 5 is a top view of the disk.
As illustrated, for example, in FIG. 1, the invention comprises a sink 1 of metallic or any other suitable material, whose concave or planar bottom in the region of the drain outlet is provided with a circular depression 2 having an annular step-like wall portion 3, forming a valve seat. The annular portion terminates in a fiat valve portion 4, 5, which is perforated, in the middle of which there is a rectangular pin or projection 6 converging upwardly. Into the circular depression of the bottom of the sink, fits the removable tray or valve disk 7 which has perforations in its side wall '8. In the center of the Fatented Jan. 28, 1964 "ice tray there is a ring 9 and an opening defined by a protruding hump 10 corresponding in shape to that of the rectangular pin 6 in the bottom of the sink.
When the tray' 7 is placed into the sink outlet with its hump 10 receiving the pin 6 the valve closes since the edges of the floor of the tray rest against the wall 2 of the circular depression in the sink.
In order to drain the sink (FIG. 2), the tray is lifted and angularly displaced by degrees, thereby crossing the major dimensions of the hump and projection, thus letting out the water.
I claim:
1. In a sink having a bottom and an outlet terminating at said bottom, in combination, a generally flat v-alve portion extending substantially parallel to said bottom and recessed therebelow at said outlet, an annular wall portion integral with said valve portion and said bottom while diverging upwardly from said valve portion toward said bottom and forming a seat, said valve portion being formed with an upwardly and inwardly tapering central projection, a valve disk axially displaceable relative to said valve portion and of substantially like diameter, said valve disk being formed with a central opening adapted to receive said projection in one relative annular position of said valve disk and valve portion wherein said valve disk bears on said seat, said valve disk resting upon said projection out of engagement with said seat and forming a clearance therewith in another relative annular position of said disk and said valve portion whereby liquid in said sink is discharged via said clearance through said outlet, said valve portion being provided with a plurality of apertures communicating with said outlet.
2. The combination according to claim 1 wherein said valve disk forms the base of a basket provided with an upwardly extending perforated wall, further comprising a handle centrally atlixed to said valve disk for facilitating the lifting of said basket out of engagement with said seat to discharge solids retained in said basket upon the passage of liquid therethrough.
3. The combination according to claim 2 wherein said sink is formed with another upwardly and outwardly extending wall portion interposed between said annular wall portion and said bottom while being integral therewith, said other wall portion forming with said perforated wall of said basket an annular clearance for the passage of said liquid.
