STEPHEN BALLARD, OF WINCHESTER, INDIANA.
ClDER-PRESS.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,713, dated February 3, 1885.
Applicatir n filed October 7, 1884. (No model To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN BALLARD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at \Vinchester, in the county of Bandolph and State of Indiana, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Cider- Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or fig ures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cider-presses; and it con sists more especially in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafjuice pressed from the fruit.
ter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 00 0c of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on the line y y of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is also a sectional view taken on the line 2 z of Fig. 3.
A A represent the upper and lower portions of a frame, between which upon vertical shafts are secured pressingrollers B B. The upper and lower frames are thoroughly braced to each other by vertical bars I). The lower portion of the frame A is provided at its edge with an upwardly-projccting flange, a, and an exit-spout, a, through which will pass the The upper surface of the lower frame, A, inclines toward the spout a. Between the upper and lower frames, A A, in front of the crushing or pressing rollers B B, to the front standards, I) b, are securedsheet-metal plates 0 G, the ends of which are curved so as to conform to the configuration of the rollers. To the lower portion of these plates is secured a trough or spout, C, which lies within a recess formed in the upwardly-projecting rim a, and through this trough passes the pomace. It will be apparent that during the pressing operation the rollers revolve from each other at the point where the plates 0 C bear, thus permitting said plates to cleanly and thoroughly remove the pomace from the said rollers, thereby permitting the former to pass out through the trough. The rollers B may be corrugated or have other approved outward configuration,
and these rollers are provided with vertical V shafts B, which shafts are provided under the frame A with gear-wheels D D, which mesh with each other and cause the rollers to rotate in unison. with inclined blocks d, which fitwithin similarly shaped recesses in the rollers B, and prevent said rollers resting upon the bottom of the frame A, so as to leave a space under which the juices will flow. One of the shafts extends upwardly above the frame A, and to this shaft power is applied for operating the press. To the rear portion of the frames, to the vertical standards I) b, is secured a box, E, in a slightly -inclined position, as shown in Fig. 3, which box is divided longitudinally by a vertical partition, 6, to the in nor end of which is hinged a door, e, the uses of which will be hereinafter set forth. WVithin the box E are secured two reciprocating plnngers, F F, which terminate beneath a feedspout, G, which spout has a sliding door or gate, 9. The plungers F F are connected by rodsff to a double crankshaft, H, one end of this crankshaft being supported in a bracket, h, while to the other end is secured a gear wheel, h, the end of the shaft resting within the bracket h. The geauwheel h meshes with a gear-wheel, I, attached to the vertical shaft 13.
My invention operates as follows: The apples are first placed in the trough or spout G, and are fed to the rollers B B by the reciprocating plungers, the hinged gate 0' between said plungers turning so as to prevent the apples entering the space previously occupied by one of the plungers, this gate swinging alternately to the right and to the left. The apples are drawn between the rollers and the juice extracted therefrom, which juice passes out of the spout a, while the poinace passes through the trough G. The plates 0 serve to keep the rollers B- clean.
I claim 1. In a cider-press, the combination, with a suitable supporting frame, of rollers B B,
