Be it known that I, J OHN L. H. MosIER, of Long Island City, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shaft and Pole Couplings for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac companying drawings.

My invention relates to that class of couplings in which one of the parts is provided with a pin and the other part has a divided eye composed of two pieces hinged together and detachably secured by a swinging buckle or loop and set-screw.

My invention consists in a novel combination of parts, particularly hereinafter de scribed, and set forth in the claim.

Figure 1 in the drawings is a side view of a shaft or pole coupling constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section 01'" the same. Fig.- 3 is a plan of the same.

A represents the clip by which the fixed jaws a a of .the coupling are attached to the axle G. B is the pin ot' the coupling, firmly and permanently secured iuthe jaws (t a by riveting or otherwise, and is represented as surrounded by an india-rubber tube or bushing, 0. O is the coupling-head, and is integral with and forms a part of said shaft-head or polehead, which is secured to the shaft or pole in the usual manner. The eye of this coupling is made in two parts, of which the upper one, O, is a solid portion of the head and is integral with and forms a part of said shafthead or pole-head, and the lower one, D, is hinged to the upper one by a hinge, b, so that it may'open downward, as shown in dotted outline in Fig. 2, to provide for the at tachment and detachment of the pole or shaft to and from the fixed pin B. The part 0 is recessed, as shown at c in Figs. 1. and 2, in front of the eye, and the part D fits into the recess 0, so that the head presents a symmetrical exterior.

is on the upper side of the head O a swell, d, to give strength for the reception of a pin or bolt, f, by which there is attached to the head a buckle or loop-piece E, which is tapped for the reception of a set-screw, F, and which when the. said buckle is in the lbackwardlyinclined position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 and in bold outlinein Fig. 2 comes under the part D in such manner that the point of the setscrew will enter a notch, 9, provided for it in the piece D.

To connect the coupling, the screw F is turned back to remove it from the notch g, and the buckle E is then swung forward, as shown in dotted outline in Fig. 2,clear of the piece D, which then dropping on the hinge b is inserted through the clip A behind the pin B and then turned up to *rlose the eye on the said pin. The buckle is then swung back to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 and in bold outline in Fig. 2, and the screw F is then screwed up into the notch g, makingthe connection of the coupling very secure. To disconnect, it is only necessary to unscrew the screw F, so that the buckle may swing forward clear of D. which is then free to open and permit the withdrawal of the coupling-- head from the clip. The head of the screw F is preferably made in the form of a ring or key-bow, which will permit it to be turned by hand without a wrench, and also provides for the attachment of a'safety-strap which encircles the axle.

I am aware of United States Letters Patent No. 216,270. granted to Hard June 10, 1879; No. 231,457, granted to Soper August 24, 1880; No. 266,535, granted to Schnider October 2t, 1882, and No. 289,413, granted to Haviland December 4, 1883, and I do not claim anything shown or described in said patents as of my invention; but
