SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,573, dated February 3, 1885.

Beit known that. I` JOHN T. Hasnnni., a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwalk, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented a new and usei'ul lmproveinent in Scaffolding, of which the i'ollowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. l,
My invention relates to scaffolding. and i0 more particularly to that class wherein afraine is adapted to slide on two or more vertical up rights, and it has l'or its object to provide iinproved means for locking said sliding frame upon said uprights; to provide improved 55 means for supporting the scaffold; and, further, to provide adjustable` arms or sections, whereby two or more of the scaffolds may be adjustably connected, whereby the same may be used as a platform or support for plasterzo ers, paper-hangers, and for all inside work where a platform is necessary.
Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the combination, with two vertical uprights connected at their upper ends, of a frame adapted to slide therein, and a springactuated locking-bar for holding said frame at any point upon the uprights` The invention further consists in the conibination, with said sliding frame, of a support or standard hinged thereto, and braces pivoted to said support and the vertical uprights.
The invention further consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view, showing a series of my improved scaffolds arranged to serve as a platform for inside work--such as paper-hanging, plastering, &c.-the same being connected by adjustable beams. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the scaffolds, taken from the rear side thereof. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, aportion of the sliding frame being removed to show more clearly the construction of lockingbar and means for holding the same in a locked position, and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section of the sliding frame.
ln the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to corresponding parts in the l several figures, A represents two vertical uprights or supportiiig-standards, which are connected at their upper ends by a spring which is substantially U shape in form and secured tothe inner sides ot' said uprights. lt' desired, however, an ordinary hinge ofsufiicient strength vmay be employed, or a pulley, as shown in my Patent No. 295,389, dated March 18, 1884, may be employed.
B represents a sliding frame. which consists ofthe side bars, a., .connected at their upper and lower ends, and on cach side thereof, by means of' strips or bars b. The upper oi' these bars b are provided at or about their center with a bracingblock, c.
To the rear lower bar b is pivoted a support or standard, C, which is provided at its end with a loop which is mounted on a shaft or rod formed by cutting away said rear lower 7o bar I).
D represents' bracing-rods, which are pivoted to the sides of the supporting-standard C, at one end, their other ends being pivoted to the uprights A. It will thus be seen that to raise the sliding frame on the vertical uprights it is only necessary to move the lower end of the standard D toward said vertical uprights,which action raises the sliding frame. Between the upper and lower strips b is se- 8o cured a strip, e, the lower end of which is provided with a block, f, having two vertical passages or openings, g.
E represents a bail or loop which is fitted in said openingsthe closed end ofthe loop being located just above the block. The lower ends of the said bail or loop are secured to a locking-bar, F, which is adapted to Jt between the vertical uprigh-ts and hold the same apart, so that the sliding frame is locked thereon. 9o To the upper or closed end ofthe bail or loop is attached one end of a coil-spring, h, the other end of which is removably attached to a pin,
t', secured to the strip c. It will be seen that when the scaffold is not in use the spring may be detached at its upper end from the pin i, and thus relieve said spring of any unnecessary strain.
ln operating the above-described device,as suniing the sliding frame to be at the lower end roo of the vertical uprights, the standard C is moved toward the vertical uprights, which action causes the sliding frame to move upwardly on the vertical uprights, and also causes said vertical uprights to extend by reason of thebracing-rods, which, as before mentioned, are pivoted both to the supportingstandard and the vertical uprights, the spring holding the locking-bar in position, so that when the frame has been raised to the desired height the locking-bar will hold the vertical uprights apart, and the sliding frame will by its own weight lock itself upon the uprights.
In using the above-described scaffold for paper-hanging or plastering a series of two,
four, or more,are employed, and arranged as shown in Fig. l, the opposite sections being connected by'beams G, which are constructed of two sections connected by collars g2 in such manner that they may be extended. The ends of said beams are notched and rest on the upper of the bars, the notched end engaging the rear bar to prevent the beams from slipping. A flooring may then be laid on said beams and a firm platform afforded.
It will be seen from the above description that the Sliding frame is automatically locked on the vertical uprights, and that by the use of the supporting-standard efficient means are provided for raising and lowering the sliding frame. and so for supporting the scaffold.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim' as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with two laterallymovable uprights, of a frame sliding thereon, and a bar for automatically locking said frame 3 5 at any point upon the Vertical uprights, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with two laterallymovable uprights connected at their upper ends,of aframe sliding thereon, alocking-bar, 40 and a coil-spring connecting said locking-bar to the frame, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with two laterallymovable uprights connected at their upper ends, of a sliding frame, a locking-bar, and a 45 bail connecting said locking-bar with a coilspring, said spring beingattachedtothesliding l frame, substantially as setforth.
4. The combination, withtwo Alaterallymovable uprights, of a frame sliding thereon, 5o and a support hinged to said frame for raising the same, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with two laterally-` movable uprights, ofa frame sliding thereon. a support or standard hinged to the lower end ofthe frame, and brace-rods pivoted to said standard and to the Vertical uprights, substantially as set forth. I p
