To aZwtout it may] concern.-
Be it known that I, SATTERLEE ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Links or Pitmen, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a link or pitman for connecting crank-pins and similar devices, of such construction that the parts may be easily assembled together and the bearings thereof be equally fit-ted by one adjustment, while any looseness occasioned by wear may be readily compensated for.
ln the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of my link or pitman with cranlcpins adapted thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 represents the slotted caps in detail.
A indicates a hollow barrel or sleeve having right and left hand screw-threads on its opposite ends, an annular shoulder, a, adjacent to one of the threaded ends, and an internally threaded check nut, a, fitting the other threaded end and forming an adj ustable shoulder.

as herein shown, are provided with spherical heads the ends of the stem B are shown as being formed concave, so as to form bearings fitting the same.
D D are caps having slots d d to receive the shanks of the crank-pins, and internally threaded to lit the threaded ends of the barrel A. These caps, when designed to be used with sphericalheaded pins, are formed concave internally at their ends, as shown, to it the same.
When it is desired to make a connection, as of the pins O, (which will first be firmly screwed into the parts for which they are designed,) the caps D will be placed over the (No moilcL) pins, and the barrel A, in which has been placed the stem B, will then be adjusted to the caps, and by turn1ng said barrel the caps will be drawn toward each other until the stem B fits snugly and equally against the pins O. The check-nut or adjustable shoulder a will then be tightened against its adjacent cap, thus preventing further rotation of the barrel and making a firm connection. The shoulder a and the check-nut a are preferably milled exteriorly, as shown in Fig. l, to facilitate the rotation of the barrel and of the Said nut.
In rotating the barrel to make the abovedescribed adjustment of the parts it will be understood that the caps D will be prevented from rotating with the barrel by the pins C passing through the slots d in said caps.
Vhen it is desired to adjust the parts to take up any looseness occasioned by wear of the bearings at the ends of the stem B or of the pins C, it is only necessary to loosen the check-nut or adjustable shoulder a', turn the barrel to take up the looseness, and then tighten said check-nut again.
Instead of making the shoulders c and a fixed and adjustable, respectively, as above described, it will be obvious that both shoulders may be made adjustable, or, in case it is not desired to compensate for wear,both shoulders may be iixed; but the construction shown is considered the best.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A link or pitman consisting ofthe com-Y bination of a hollow barrel or sleeve having right and left hand screw-threads at its opposite ends, a stein placed loosely in said barrel, and threaded caps fitting the threaded ends of said barrel, substantially as set forth.

A link or pitman consisting of the combination of a hollow barrel or sleeve having right and left hand screw-threads at its opposite ends, an annular fixed shoulder adjacent to one of the threaded ends, and a check-nut or adjustable shoulder fitting the otherthreaded end, a stem placed loosely in said'barrel, and threaded caps iitting the threaded ends of said barrel, substantially as set forth.
