FEED WATER lNJECTOR.
:JPECIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,500, dated February 3, 1885.
Application filed April 11, 1883. (ModeL) To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LorrUs, of the city and county of Albany, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed ater Injectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements on the feed-water injector for which Letters Patent No. 247,464 of the United States were granted to me on the 20th day of September, 1881; and the object of my present improve ments is to simplify the construction of the device, and to render its action more certain and effective. This object I attain by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompa nying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figurel is a longitudinal section of my improved inject-0r; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same; Fig. 3, an enlarged longitudinal section of the bushing or combining-tube; and Figs. at and 5 are respeclivelya side elevation and an end elevation of the same.
As represented in the drawings, A is the body-piece of the injector, made in cylindrical form, and having a branch, a, for the induction water-pipe connection depending from its under side, and two connecting valve-chambers, a and a formed on its upper side. In the bore of said body-piece, adjacent to the rear side of the opening in the branch (1, an annular flange, c, is formed for the purpose of forming the watcr-chamberB. Alongitudinal opening, 0, is made through the center of the flange (6, which opening has an expanded mouth, 0, that is turned toward the chamber B. A second annular flange or rib, D, that is formed in the bore of the bodypiece A, between the valve-openings which lead into the valve chambers a and a separates the vacuum-chamber E from the chamber F. flange D is bored out to receive a removable bushing, U, which is fitted to slide easily therein. The said bushing, which constitutes the combining-tube of my device, contains a tapered longitudinal opening, 9, through its axial center, and the largest end of said open ing is turned toward the opening 0. Aslight flange, g, on the body of said bushing G, or any equivalent means, prevents the bushing The.
from entering the body-piece beyond its prescribed distance toward the flange a WVings or lugs g on the rearmost end of the bushing G keep said bushing, should it be displaced by the pressure against its forward end, from moving too far toward the discharging end of the injector. The spaces between said lugs give ample room for the passage of water t-herethrough when the water relief valve is open. The bushing G is so fitted that it can be readily removed from the body-piece A through the discharging end of the injector. Thereby the interior of the bodypiece is rendered readily accessible for the removal of any dirt or other obstructing matter that may become lodged therein, and for the renewal of the bushing when it is worn or otherwise impaired by use, or the substitution of a bushing which contains a differentsized opening, can be effected without di'lficulty. A bushing, H, is fitted to screw into the forward or receiving end of the body piece A. Said bushing is provided with a jaux-nut, h, whereby the bushing is secured in place afterit has been adjusted to the required distance into the chamber The outer end of the bushing H is furnished with the usual means for attaching the steam-supply pipe thereto, and on its inner end a nozzle, h, is formed. Said nozzle has a tapered longitudinal opening, h bored through its axis, to range in line with the opening G. The end of said nozzle may be adjusted to enter the mouth 0 of the opening 0 when occasion requires such adj n'stment.
Over the vacuum chamber E there is a steam-relief valve, 0, that is arranged to close the opening which leads into the valve-chamber a. Said valvechamber has an escapeopening, a to which an escape-pipe may be connected for the purpose of conducting away any steam or water that may escape therethrough.
In the top of the chamber F an opening is formed to lead into the valve-chamber a5", and into said opening the water relief valvef is fitted, so as to close the communication between the chamber E andvalve-chainber a.
The valve-chambers a and a are connected by means of the passage a in such manner IOC that the single escape-opening a will serve for both of said chambers. A bushing I, is screwed into rearmost or discharge end of the body-piece A, and the outer end of the said bushing is provided with the usual means for connecting thereto the feed water pipe that leads from the injector to the boiler. The inner end of said bushing is provided with a recess for receiving a supplementary bushing or reducer, J. The bushing J is removable from its recess in order to substitute bushings with different size of opening, and so as to'facilitate the renewal of such bushings whenever their openings have become worn or otherwise impaired by use.
v The operation of my injector having been fully described in Letters Patent No. 247,464, hereinbefore referred to, a repetition of it herein is unnecessary.
I claim as my invention 1. In a feedwater injector, aremovable combining-tube or bushing, G, fixed in the annular flange D of the body piece A, and provided at its rearmost end With wings orlugs as and for the purpose herein specified.
2. In afeed-water injector, the combination, with the bushing I, contained in the discharge end of the body-piece A, of the removable bushing or reducer J, inserted in the inner end of the bushing I, as and for the purpose o herein specified.
JOHN LOFTUS.
