COMBINED COAL-SCREEN AND DUST-RECEIVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311A85, dated February 3, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRISON GRIDLEY and THOMAS J OHNSON, of Ganandaigua, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Coal-Screens and Dust- Receivers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriplion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement in combined coal-screens and dust-receivers.
Hitherto it has been customary to construct devices of the above character in a clumsy and inconvenient manner, with the bottom of the receiver horizontal. requiring a handling of the dust to remove it from the receiver, and mounted upon four wheels, whereby it is rendered awkward to turn and difficult to tilt.
The object of our present invention is to provide a light substantial screen and convenient means for securing the same at any convenient angle over a dust receiver, a further object being to provide a dust-receiver of such shape and so mounted that the dust falling from the screen may be removed from the receiver without a second handling and the device wheeled from place to place with slight expenditure of time and labor; and with these ends in view our invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

A represents the dust-receiver. It consists of a funnel-shaped box, preferably having V- shaped sides and slightly-tapering ends, the rear end being provided with a door, a, at the bottom. The upper edge of the door dis hinged to the end of the receiver and the lower edge is provided with a catch or lock, B, for conveniently locking the door in closed adjustment and allowing the same to be readily opened. The receiver is mounted on two wheels, G, which latter are constructed in a light and durable manner and capable of sustaining any reasonable weight to which they may be subjected. The front of the receiver A is provided with a depending portion, D, adaptedto form a support for the receiver when in position for use and hold the upper front edge of the receiver a convenient distance above the ground or floor to prevent the dust and screened coal from clogging the lower end of the screen soon after the process of screeningis commenced. A receiver, A, is further provided with a pair of handles, E, secured to its sides for convenience in moving it from place to place and tilting it forwardly to unload the dust. The handles also extend forwardly and brace the end support, D. A screen, F, is hinged to the 'front end of the receiver, and is held in any desired angular adjustment on the receiver by means of a standard,f, the upper end of which is hinged to the bottom of the screen and the lower end adapted to engage the notches G, formed ona bar secured to the inside of the rear end of the receiver.
The screen is constructed in a substantial manner, but without a useless amount of iron and timber, the wire-cloth being wrapped about a band of iron along its edges and bolted to the frame through the iron band.
The device as thus constructed forms a very convenient, economical, and durable combination, enabling the operator to set the screen in any desired position and at any desired angle without loss of time, and, further, enabling the operator to wheel the dust to a convenient locality and there unload the same without a second handling, and, also, admits of moving the screen away from the screened coal as it accumulates, thereby saving a second handling of the latter.
It is evident that slight changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention; hence we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves tO the construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a funnel or V shaped dust-receiver provided. at or near its center with wheels, of an inclined screen secured thereon, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a funnel shaped dustreceiver provided at or near its center with a pair of wheels, of ascreen secured thereon in vertical angular adjustment.
3. The, combination, with a funnel or V shaped dust-receiver mounted at or near its center on a pair of'wheels, of a door located at the junction of the front and rear sides of the receiver for unloading or discharging the contents.
4. The combination, with a funnel-shaped tilting dust-receiver provided with handles, a depending end support, and a pair of wheels, of a vertically-adj ustable screen secured thereon. substantially as set forth.
