LAWRENCE LYNCH, OF BATAVIA, NEW YORK.
BRIDLE BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,436, dated January 27, 1885.
Application filed July 16, 1884.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE LYNCH, a citizen of the United States, residing atBatavia, in the county of Gen esee and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bridle-Bits, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention relates to improvements in bridle-bits, in which a single mouth-piece is used in conjunction with cheek-pieces and cheek-strap attachments; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a single mouth-piece, cylindrical in form, with a centrally longitudinally tubular perforation its entire length, and having eyes for the usual cheek-straps rigidly attached to each end of the tubular mouth-piece; second to render the bit easy in its operation within the mouth of the horse by giving a certain amount of lateral play to the driving-reins by the use of a flexible connection within the tube forming the mouthpiece. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the entire bit, showing the rein-rings attached to the ends of the flexible connecting rod or chain, and Fig. 2 isalongitudinal sectional view taken through the center of the mouthpiece and the rigid cheek-strap eyes.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throu ghout the several views.
A is the tubular mouth-piece, made continuous the entire length, and having rigidly attached to each end the cheek-strap eyes A, the eyes having a corresponding opening with the mouthpiece. These ch eek-strap eyes may be screw-threaded, riveted, welded, or made fast in any well-known manner, so that they shall be rigidly attached and allow of the continuous tubular opening.
(No model.)
D are rein-rings attached to the ends of a flexible rod or chain, D, so arranged that it passes loosely through the tube forming the mouth-piece.
E are cheek pieces, preferably made of leather; but, if desired, metal or other suitable material may be used. These cheek-pieces are sleeved upon the tubular mouth-piece, and are placed in position before the cheek-strap eyes are attached. This bit is especially designed for use in connection with tender-mouthed horses, and is not calculated for service as a safety-bit upon vicious animals.
In practice it is not necessary to give the bit a lateral movement in guiding the horse, as the chain connecting the rein-rings is made longer than the mouth-piece through which it passes, so as to give the necessary play without causing the actuation of the mouthpiece.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of the tubular mouthpiece, the cheek-strap pieces firml y united to the mouth-piece, with the orifice extending through the whole length, and the cheekpieces sleeved upon the tubular mouth-piece, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the tubular mouthpiece, the cheek-strap eyes firmly united with the mouth-piece, and the flexible rod or guiding-chain, arranged substantially as described.
3. The combination of the tubular mouthpiece, the flexible guiding rod or chain, and the rein-rings attached to either end of the chain, substantially as described.
LAWRENCE LYNCH.
