Claims priority, application Germany Aug. 20, 1958 4 Claims. (Cl. 165--67) The invention is concerned with a device for cooling high capacity tubes used in wireless transmitters and the like, employing a potlike cooling container, generally referred to as a cooling pot, which is continuously supplied with a cooling medium.
The object of the invention is to provide for quick and reliable exchange of tubes.
In a known coaxial line arrangement, the tubes disposed in the flight of the line are made easily exchangeable, for example, by making parts of the coaxial line extending near the tubes pivotally displaceable about an axis lying outside of the line axis. -It is moreover known to pivotally arrange, for example, mounting plates supporting structural elements disposed above tubes, so as to facilitate the exchange of the tubes.
The exchange of heavy high capacity transmitter tubes arranged within cooling pots which are continuously supplied with cooling medium introduces considerably greater difllculties, first, because the space required for the corresponding parts is often blocked by other structural elements and, further, because the fluid-cooled tubes (cooled by liquid or evaporation) must be removed from their cages. Only very short time intervals are in case of wireless transmitters permissible for interrupting operation for the purpose of exchanging tubes and, so far as possible, no time additional to that required for disconnecting electrical terminals must therefore be expended for discon necting the cooling conduits. The disconnection of water conduits or steam conduits has moreover the disadvantage that cooling water or condensation water may flow oil and wet electrical elements, thereby causing functional disturbances and corrosion.
As indicated before, the object of the invention is to effect, even in the case of tight space conditions or in connection with heavy high capacity tubes, -a quick and reliable tube exchange while preventing discharge of cooling medium so as to avoid contamination of apparatus parts.
This object is according to the invention realized by the provision of means for pivotally mounting the cooling pot for rotation together with the conduit means for the cooling medium connected therewith, from the operating position of the tube into another servicing position in which the tube is readily accessible for unhindered manipulation thereof and can be readily exchanged without requiring disconnection of the conduits for supplying the cooling medium.
In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, the conduit for the cooling medium advantageously may be carried concentrically through a rotatable post carrying the cooling pot, and is in its connected position rotatable together with the post and the cooling pot. A hollow or tubular rotatable post through which the cooling medium can be directly conducted is particularly suitable for this purpose.
Another possibility is to dispose the cooling conduit outside the rotatable post and along its journal which conduit, in its connected condition, is rotatable with the post and the cooling pot.
Rotatable gaskets or seals are preferably employed for the connection of the conduit for the cooling medium to the pivotal device, so as to effect easy rotation thereof upon displacement of the cooling pot.
With a device according to the invention, the cooling pots may be provided within a transmitter housing and may be rotated from their operating positions outwardly of the housing where there are no disturbing structural elements above the cooling pots, thus permitting the maintenance person to stand next thereto and effect a tube exchange in comfortable and reliable manner. No conduits for the cooling need be disconnected upon rotating the cooling pots, thus preventing outflow of cooling medium and therewith detrimental effects on the functioning of the structural parts involved.
As contrasted with known fixedly disposed conduits for the cooling medium, the corresponding conduits are according to the invention connected by means of rotatable seals or gaskets along the rotatable post.
The rotatable post for the cooling pot is suitably made of insulating material, preferably ceramic material, thus affording at the same. time an insulated mounting for the cooling pot. The rotatable post made of insulating material, the water column contained therein, may moreover form a water resistance for the anode direct voltage and partially for the high frequency voltage.
At the bottom of the rotatable post, there may be provided a connecting head constructed as a rotary seal and including an insulating tube extending parallel to the rotatable post, which may operate as a conduit for conducting the cooling medium and also operate as a 'water resistance. The steam conducting arm of an evaporation cooling pot may be constructed as a rotatable arm with a suitable bushing for receiving the rotatable post. The cooling pot, in the embodiment illustrated, held in operating position by a strap binding provided with a quick release latch, and such binding may at the same time serve as an electrical circuit terminal.
The various objects and features of the invention will be brought out in the course of the description of embodiments thereof which will be rendered below with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
FIG. .1 shows an embodiment, partially in section, comprising a conduit for conducting the cooling medium, such conduit extending concentrically through the rotatable post of the device; and
FIG. 2 illustrates an embodiment in which the conduit conducting the cooling medium extends laterally of and alongside the rotatable post and being rotatable therewith.
Referring now to FIG. 1, there is provided a cooling pot 1 for the high capacity tube 12, such pot being by means of a hollow arm 1a fixedly connected with the rotatable post 3. A flattened portion 4 on the rotatable post secures the arm 1a and the cooling pot in a predetermined position with respect to the post. The rotatable post is journalled in one or more journals 5 which arev dimensioned in accordance with the forces to be encoun tered; Respectively below and above the rotatable post and coaxially therewith are provided conduits 6 and 7 for circulating the cooling medium into which extends the anode 2a of the tube 2. The minimum spacing between the journal 5 and the fastening 8 aligned with the bottom of the cooling pot depends upon the anode voltage .to be used. A clamp strap 9 with a quick release latch may be provided to hold the cooling pot in operating position and, at the same time, may serve as a terminal for an electrical circuit.
A rotatable seal 10 permits flow of the cooling medium from a fixed conduit 11, suitably supported by a bracket 11' (also shown in FIG. 2.), through the rotatable tubular post 3 irrespective of the angular position thereof. The rotatable post with the cooling medium therein may, at the same time, form a fluid or water resistance. A conduit 12 provides means for conducting the cooling medium from the rotatable post to the cooling pot, such conduit being arranged so that it can be inserted into the cooling pot. Pipe gaskets can therefore be exchanged Without dismounting other parts.
The liquid coolant is fed to the cooling pot 1 through the conduit 12, the coolant filling the pot 1 to a level permitting the downwardly extending anode 2a of the high capacity transmitter tube 2 to be immersed in the liquid coolant, the heat radiated by the anode causing the coolant to be evaporated. The steam of the evaponated coolant is conducted through the hollow arm 1a and coupling 7 for recirculation to the pot 1 through the conduits 1i and 1'2.
In the embodiment according to FIG. 2, there is provided a connecting head 13 which is secured to the rotatable post 3. A flattened port-ion 14 on the rotatable post secures the connecting head 13 in :a predetermined position with respect to the cooling pot 1. A rotatable seal 15 permits the fiowv of the cooling medium from the fixed conduit 11 through the connecting head independent of the position of such connecting head. An insulating tube 16 extends from the connecting head to the cooling pot, such insulating tube extending outside of and alongside of the rotatable post 3 and along the journal means thereof, such tube being in connected condition rotatable with the rotatable post 3 and the cooling pot 1. This insulating tube with the cooling medium contained therein forms a fluid resistance.
Changes and modifications may be made the scope and spirit of the appended claims which define what is believed to be new and desired to have protected by Letters Patent.
