Description
(No Model.) J. H. MARKELL.
NECK YOKE.
No. 311,343. Patented Jan. 27, 1885'.
WITNESSES 6M K W UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. MARKELL, OF HAYTS CORNERS, NEW YORK.
NECK-YO'KE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,343, dated January 27, 1885.
Application filed September 5, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JOHN H. MARKELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hayts Corners, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to certain improvements in neck-yokes, and is designed to produce a device that shall firmly hold the poleleather without in any way weakening it or in the least cutting it, and at the same time taking the strain from the clamping bolts or screws.
In describing the device reference is had to the annexed drawing, in which is represented a perspective of the device.
A designates a neck-yoke of ordinary construction adapted to surround a yoke-bar and be firmly clamped to it. The pole-leather is inserted between the wings B of the neckyoke, and secured therein by screws or bolts passing through the holes 0 in the wings. Each wing has formed on its inner surface two longitudinal, ribs or flanges, D, having rounded edges, so as not to out or tear the leather, but merely indent it, when the screws (No model.)
or bolts are tightened. Two flanges are preferred to agreater number, and are placed one on each side the screw-holes and a short distance-say one-quarter of an inch-from the edges of the wings. These flanges are better than lugs, pins, or corrugations, as they do not pierce the leather or indent its entire surface, both of which tend to destroy its holding qualities.
Having described the device, what I claim 1s 1. A neck-yoke having the wings which clasp the pole-leather each provided on each side the screw or bolt holes with longitudinal flanges or ribs formed a short distance from the edges of the said wings, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A neck-yoke having the wings which clasp the pole leather each provided with longitudinal flanges or ribs having rounded edges, the said ribs being on the inner or bearing side of the said wings, substantially as and for the purpose specified. l
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. MARKELL.
W'itnesses:
FRANCIS G. ALLEN, WILLIAM C. HAzELToN.
