TILFORD C. SIVING, OF MASON CITY, ILLINOIS.
PIANO-PEDAL ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,043, dated January 20, 1885.
Application filed March 3, 188-1.
To all whom it may OOH/08PM.
Be it known that I, TrLEoED C. Swine, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mason City, in the county of Mason and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Attachment for Piano- ]?edals, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the aeconr panying drawings.
My invention relates to an attachment for pedals of pianos or organs; and it consists in the parts which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the piano lyre and pedal provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of my device se cured to a fragment of a pedal.
Like letters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
The letter A represents the base of the lyre, having the pedals B B and rods 0 C secured thereto in the usual manner.
D represents the cylindrical casing of my device provided with opening D. This opening extends nearly the entire length of the c.1s ing, as shown in Fig. 2.
E is a longitudinal slot in the casing D.
F is a heel-piece on the casing D, having a flat under side adapted to lie on the face of the pedal B when the device is turned out, as shown in the accompanying figures.
G is a toe-piece on the bottom of the casing D,adapted to lie on the face of the hinged plate sition.
H. is a lug on the clamp-plate II. This lug lies in a recess, H, on the under side of the casing D. Said casing is pivoted to the lug H, as shown in Fig. 2.
I is a clamp-plate placed under the pedal pedal by means of the screws 1.
J is a rod provided with a recess, J,where by the rod J may be secured in any desired position within the opening D. W hen the thumb-screw K is loose, the shank thereof is adapted to move freely within the longi tudinal slot E, and at the same time permit (X0 model.)
| the rod J to be moved freely within the recess D.
I. is a foot-pieee on the top of the rod J.
The object of my device is to permit a child to operate the piano-pedals on an elevated stool. It is well known that the ordinary pedal is constructed to conform to the height of an adult. By the use of my device either an adult or child may operate the pedals with ease and certainty. The rod Jand toot-piece L may be raised or lowered to conform to the convenience of a child by means of the said screw Ii. By pressing the foot on the piece L the heel-pieee F forces down the main pedal B and operates the pedal-rods in the usual manner. My device is in the nature of a lever, whereby the main pedal is easily operated.
When the device is not in use, or when an adult desires to operate the main pedal B, the attachment may be turned back so that the toe-pieee G may rest on the face of the clampplate II, whereby the device will maintain a vertical posit-ion and be completely out of the way of the operator.
The device herein shown can be easily attached to and detached from the pedal. It is cheap and simple and effective in its operation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A cylinder, I), provided with slot E, heel-piece F, and toe-piece G, the rod J, having foot-piece L, said cylinder being hinged to the main pedal, substantially as described and set forth.
2. A slotted cylinder, D, provided with heel and toe pieces F G, respectively, and hinged to the pedal, as specified, in combination with the rod J, provided with a footpieee, L, recess J, and thumb-screw K, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
TILFORD O. SAVING.
