I .Inv'e Hi0 QWZ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WESLEY W. MCOHESNEY, OF GREEN ISLAND, NEW YORK.
PULLEY.
SPECIPICA'IIO N forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,023, dated January 20, 1885.
Application filed December 8, 1884. (No mrdel.)
To all whom it may concern.-
and, after inserting one end through the aper- Be it known that I, WESLEY W. MoOnEsture D, to connect the severed ends again be- NEY, a resident of Green. Island, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulleys; andI do hereby deelarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
My invention relates to improvements in pulleys, and to that class denominated side pulleys.
The object of my invention is to provide a pulley which will permit of the convenient insertion and removal of an endless rope or cable without injury to the pulley.
My invention consistsin constructing the box in sections adapted to be rotated on the pulley-axle from a parallel to a right-angular position relatively to each other, and vice Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of the face of a side pulley. Fig; 2 is a sideor edge view of same with the sections parallel to each other, or in position for use. Fig. 3 is a plan view of back side of same. Fig. 4
central enlarged portions of the sections are connected by a screw, 9, or rivet d, which supports the grooved pulley 0 between said sections.
Heretofore in the use of such pulleys it has been necessary to sever the cord or cable which travels in the groove of said pulley,
fore the same was ready for use, and to sever the same again before it could be withdrawn from the pulley, as the two sections have either been of cast metal in a single piece or have been inseparably connected together when made in sections; but the employment of my improved device permits the back plate or section, B, to be turned from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 4, in which it occupies a position right angular to the section A. The middle portions of the sections A and B are a trifle wider than the diameter of the pulley, to protect it from contact with external objects, but not so wide as to interfere with the free and easy ingress and egress of the chain or cord to or from the pulley-groove through apertures D. After the cord has been inserted or withdrawn, as the case may be, the sections are restored to the position shown in Fig. 2, ready for use, it only being necessaryto remove and insert the screws through the end apertures of the sections and turn one section upon the other. The rivet d may pass through both sections and be headed down upon the outer surfaces, as shown in Fig. 4; or it may be cast integral with one of the sections, as B, (shown in Fig. 2,) rendered malleable, and the projecting end headed down upon the outer surface of section A.
Instead of a rivet a screw, Fig. 1', may be employed, and if this screw projects into the pulley-supports the pulley need not be entirely removed therefrom when the cord is withdrawn or inserted. I am thus able to cheaply produce a strong and durable side pulley that can be easily and quickly opened to receive a cord or chain, and as easily closed again to securely retain the same when in use.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A side pulley consisting of a pulley supporting and inclosing box made in sections, connected by the pulley-supporting axle, and adapted to turn thereon and form an ingress and egress opening through said inclosure to screw-holes a a, substantially as and for the and from said pulley, substantially as and for purposes set forth.
the purposes set forth. 7 p 2. In a side pulley, and in combination, a a plane back plate, B, an inolosing front plate, A, connecting screw or rivet d, pulley O, and means for securing said plates firmly together, and at the same time to their support, as
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of November, 1884.
\VESLEY XV. MOOHESNEY.
