Description

Nov. 12, 1963 CAP FOR VERTICAL EXHAUST PIPE OF INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE Filed Nov. 28, 1960 e. DAsHWobD, JR 3,110,239
United States Patent 3,110,239 CAP FQR VERTICAL EXHAUST PIPE OF INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE George Dashwood, Jr., Kelso, Sahatchewau, Qanada (Doonside, Saskatchewan, Canada) Filed Nov. 28, 1960, 52:. No. 71,965 1 Claim. (Cl. 98-59) This invention relates to exhaust pipe caps for internal combustion engines, having particular reference to a cap for use on a vertical exhaust pipe of gasoline or diesel type engines.
In the art to which the invention relates, for engines using a vertical exhaust pipe some protection is needed to prevent moisture entering the pipe and running down into the exhaust manifold. For this some form of pivotally attached cap has been proposed, but such devices are very noisy and wear quickly, also they are easily blown open by the wind.
In the present device an exhaust pipe closure cap or hood is provided mounted on the exhaust pipe slidable on upstanding rods or wires attached to the exhaust pipe. Such a cap will not blow open by outside wind and gravitates automatically into closing relation to the exhaust pipe outlet when the engine is not running.
In the drawings, wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention:
FIG. 1 is a side view showing a fragment of the outlet end portion of an engine exhaust pipe on which is shown mounted a closure cap in accordance with the present invention, the pipe being shown in part broken away and the pipe and cap partly in section, and the closure cap shown in closing relation to the exhaust pipe outlet.
FIG. 2 shows a side view of a cap and attaching elements in accordance with my invention mounted on an engine exhaust pipe, a fragment only of the outlet portion of the latter being shown, and in which the cap is elevated as when exhaust gases are discharging from the pipe.
FIG. 3 shows a top plan view of a cap taken by itself.
FIG. 4 illustrates a side view of a tractor, broken away in part, on the exhaust pipe of which a closure cap in accordance with my invention is shown mounted.
Having reference to the drawings, at 1 is indicated the outlet portion of an engine exhaust pipe on which a closure cap 2 is mounted vertically slidable on rods or wires 3 that are attached welded on a clamping band 4 that is tightly secured on the exhaust pipe 1 by a bolt 5 engaging outwardly projecting flanged end portions 6 of the clamping band.
For mounting the cap 2 on the rods 3 openings at 7 are provided in flange portions 8 of the cap, and these openings preferably have bushings 9 inserted therein seice cured to the cap to prevent binding of the cap on the rods so that it will rise or fall easily, particularly under adverse conditions, such as where the exhaust pipe is inclined by reason of the tractor or vehicle operating on a slope, or because movement of the cap is hampered by outside winds. The cap further has the center portion moulded, as at 10, to shed moisture, and includes a flat rim portion 11 overlying the exhaust outlet end of the pipe. The upper end portions 12 of the rods 3 turn inward to hold the cap on the rods.
In FIGURE 4 is shown application of a cap 13 in accordance with my invention and to the exhaust pipe 14 of a tractor 15.
In the use of the device the cap normally rests on the outlet end of the exhaust pipe, as shown in FIGURE 1, in which position descending moisture, such as rain or snow, is diverted by the cap. When the engine is running the exhaust gases from the pipe 1 push the cap upward allowing escape of the gases, but when the engine stops the cap gravitates into its closing position on the outlet end of the exhaust pipe. To prevent the cap coming off the rods 3 the upper ends of the rods have means limiting upward movement of the cap, this preferably being accomplished by turning the rod ends inward, as indicated at 12.
Having thus particularly described my invention what I claim and wish to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a closure for the outlet end of a vertical engine exhaust pipe, said closure being of a character mounted on rods attached on the exhaust pipe with the closure supported over the outlet end of the exhaust pipe, the improvement which consists in providing a closure cap mounted free to slide vertically on the rods, said cap having guide bushings thereon to prevent binding of the cap on the rods by which the cap may be freely raised thereon by pressure of gases escaping from the exhaust pipe and may gravitate freely downward on the rods on release of the pressure, said rods having their upper end portions turned at right angles to the remaining portions of the rods forming stops limiting upward movement of the caps.
