Description

Nov. 5, 1963 F. J. TRIFARO ETAL 3,109,244
METHOD OF TEACHING AND CORRECTING A GOLF CLUB SWING Filed April 13, 1962 /0 FIG. 1.
United States Patent ()fiice 3-,l,244 Fatented Nov. 5, 1%63 3,109,244 MlE'II-IUD 9F TEACHING AND CGRRECTING A GULF CLUB SWING Felice .I. Trifaro and Helen Trifaro, both of 3209 Dalemead Sh, Terrance, (Iaiiit'. Filed Apr. 13, 1962, Ser. No. 187,380 1 Claim. (Cl. 3529) Tins invention relates to a novel device for teaching and correcting golf swings, including shoulder turn, body turn, hip movement, and foot work.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an efficient, practical, easy to use, and simple device of the kind indicated, which is devised to be placed across the back of the subject and held in the crooks of the elbows, with its lower end aimed at a golf ball placed on the ground, or on a tee, between the spread feet of the subject, in the manner of a golf club, so that the correct shoulder turn, body turn, hip movement, and foot work involved in correctly addressing and striking the ball are enforced and can be repeated until learned, before using a golf club.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character indicated above, which is in the form of a rod long enough to extend between the crooks of the elbows and across the back, and reach to a golf ball laid on the ground, the rod being composed of telescoped sections which provide for adjustments of its effective length for accommodating players of difierent sizes and different golf clubs, and for closing up the rod to a relatively short length for convenient carrying and storage thereof.
Other important objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein, for purposes of illustration only, a specific form of the invention is set forth in detail.
FIGURE 1 is a side elevation of a device of the present invention, showing the same collapsed or closed up to storage length;
FIGURE 2 is a contracted View like FIGURE 1, showing the rod extended;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal section taken on the line 33 of FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 4 is a schematic perspective view, showing the device in use by a subject and pointed at a golf ball on the ground, phantom lines showing portions of the arms and hands at the top of a proper swing with a golf club; and
FIGURE 5 is a view like FIGURE 4, showing the completion of the follow-through.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the numeral generally designates a device of the present invention, consisting of an elongated preferably tubular rigid rod which involves a short middle section 12 having reduced diameter threaded tips 14, on its ends, on
which the inner ends of inner sections 16, of similar length and diameter, are threaded. The inner sections 16 have slidably telescoped in their outer ends intermediate sections 18, into whose outer ends outer sections 20 are slidably telescoped. One or both of the outer sections 20 is provided with a linear scale 22, referred to the outer end of an intermediate section 18, for use in properly extending the device from a collapsed storage condition, to lengths previously determined to be required by the user of the device and by the golf club or clubs to be used by the subject.
As shown in FIGURES 4 and 5, the long rigid rod 10 is positioned across a players back with the crooks C of the elbows E firmly hooked around the rod 10. The rod, when so held by the player, is swung in such a manner that the rod is angled downwardly and forwardly and an end of the rod 10 passes close to a golf ball B positioned on the ground in front of the feet F of the player. This forces the subject or player to assume a correct position of the shoulders, the body, the hips, and the feet F, relative to the ball B, and forcibly retains these positions while the subject goes through the motions of a correct swing for driving the ball B, when a golf club G is used, instead of the device 10. This correct swing can then be practiced any desired number of times, without a golf club G, until the feel of the correct positions is obtained. Thereafter, the subject practices these correct positions without the device 10, using a golf club G, and swinging the golf club from the position of the back-swing, as shown in FIGURE 4, through the followthrough, shown in FIGURE 5.
Although there has been shown and described a preferred form of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not necessarily confined thereto, and that any change or changes in the structure of and in the relative arrangements of components thereof are contemplated as being within the scope of the invention as defined by the claim appended hereto. 1
What is claimed is:
The method of teaching and correcting a golf swing of a player which comprises positioning a long rigid rod across a players back with the crooks of the elbows firmly hooked around said rod, and swinging said rod in such a manner that the rod is angled downwardly and forwardly and an end of said rod passes close to a golf ball positioned on the ground in front of the player.
