J.-A. ROSS.
GAR COUPLING.
Patented Jan. 13, 1885'.
WITNESSES V I JJVVEJVTOR 44.44% 0% fizzy/3% Y .dttbrney it rricra JAMES ARTHUR ROSS, OF PLYMOUTH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO RUTH L. JONES, OF SAME PLACF.
CAR=COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,726, dated January 13, 1885.
Application filed November 25, 1884. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Janus ARTHUR Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Luzerne and State 5 of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in automatic car-couplings. It consists, essentially,of a gravitating draw- 1 5 bar, suitable springs adapted to hold the drawbar in position to couple and to release said draw-bar as the cars come together and the springs are compressed, a weight attached to the draw-bar which throws the same into a position to effect the coupling when its head enters the receiving draw-head on the opposite car and said draw-bar is released from the springs.
The particular construction and arrangement of the various parts I will now proceed to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a bottom plan view, partly in section, showing the arrangement of the 0 springs, the draw-bar being in position to couple. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the draw-bar released from the spring-catch, dotted lines showing position of draw-bar when coupled. Fig. 3 is a 5 detail.
Referring to said drawings, A. is a round draw-bar supportedby the bearing a,which is secured to the under side of the car-platform. Said draw-baris provided on its outer 0 end with a head, 13, formed like a flat arrowhead and on its rear end with the enlarged portion C,which enters the cylinder D, and is forced forward against the bearing a by the spring (I. The outward movement of the draw-bar is limited by the shoulder c striking against said bearing a. The cylinder D is secured to the platform in any desired manner.
E is a weighted arm or lever secured to the draw-bar at right angles to said bar and in the same plane as the flat head 13. p
e is a weight secured to the end of the arm E.
F is an arm projecting from the bearing a. On one side of said arm is the spring-catchf.
c is an enlargement on the upper part of the arm E,with which the spring-catch f engages and holds the draw-bar in a position to couple.
0" is a projection on the upper side of the draw-bar, which limits the downward swing of the arm E when it is released from the spring-catch.
G is the receiving draw-head on the oppo site car, having the mouth 9 and shoulders g. Said mouth 1 is made of such a width and height that the flat head of the draw-bar will readily pass into and out of the draw-head when in a horizontal position, but when in a vertical position the shoulders g engage and couple the cars.
\Vhen it is desired to couple the cars, the arm on the draw-bar is raised until it engages with the spring-catcl1 the flat arrow-head B being held in a horizontal plane ready to enter the receiving draw-head on the opposite car. As the cars come together the head or" the draw-bar strikes against the inner end of the draw-head, compressing the spring (I and releasing the arm E from the spring-catch f. The weight then takes efi'ect, causing the arm E to drop to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and turns the fiat head of the draw-bar in the draw-head to a vertical position, causing it to engage with theshoulders g and couple the cars. hen it is desired to uncouple, the arm E is raised until it engages with the spring-catch f, and the head of the draw-bar being in a horizontal. position is released from the shoulders and the cars are uncoupled. The spring (I in the cylinder normally holds the draw-bar forward and acts as a buffer as the cars come together.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a car-coupling, a draw-bar supported by a bearing, and having a flat arrow-head uIO and an enlarged rear end, suitable springs for holding the draw-bar in a position to couple, and aweight adapted to turn the draw-bar and effect the coupling when said draw-bar is released from the springs, in combination with a receiving draw-head provided with suitable shoulders for engaging with the flat arrowhead of the draw-bar when the same is released from the springs and turned by the weight, all arranged and operating substantially as shown and described.
2. The draw-bar A, having the flat arrowhead B, enlarged rear end, 0, weighted arm E, and bearing a, and spring-catch f, in combination with the draw-head G, having the mouth 9 and shoulders g, substantially as shown and described.
3. The draw-bar A,having the fiat arrowhead B, enlarged rear end, 0, and weighted arm E, the bearing a, cylinder D, spring d, 20 and spring-catch f, in combination with the draw-head G, having the mouth 9 and shoulders 9, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose shown and described. 25
In testimony whereof I affix my signature J in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES ARTHUR ROSS.
